HOW TO: Grow Sprouts for Chickens

- After posting my last video, I had a few requests on how we grow sprouts for our chickens, so here it is! I’m sure there are a million videos and ways to do this, but this is how we do it with what we have on hand. Yes, it could be better, but if it works, it works! We are using trays and mason jars, but you can use ANYTHING to soak the seeds as long as the seeds are completely submerged and ANYTHING to sprout them as long as there is about 1/2" of seed depth.
Also, please ignore the gel polish on my thumbs. They started peeling, and I couldn’t help myself. 🤣
The reason why the grains are sprouting uneavenly is because even after you've drained them, one side still retains more water than the other. You should build a small shelf for the trays to sit on and cover it with tarp, then place the shelf somewhere outside. Drill holes 1 inch apart into the bottom of the pans so that they can drain evenly. This way, you can simply water the grains with a hose or watering can and then allow the water to drain through the holes in the bottom of the pans. Thank you for your video, though. I've seen others that have shown how to do this, but yours was the most explanatory. Make sure that the shelves are slotted, not completely solid, so that the water can properly drain.

That's what I'd been doing is turning the tray around each day. Doesn't seem to make a huge difference, though. :(
This was very helpful - real sprouting trays aren't available where I live (even online), so seeing how you do it in foil trays gave me some ideas!

It would be easier to poke holes in the pan that has seed and sit in a pan that has no holes. The just lift the pan with seeds empty the pan underneath.
I wanted to be able to reuse the pans if possible, but you're right. It would be easier. :P
That's what I do takes 3 minutes with a watering can to water 7 pans.

There are others who work about 1/4 or 1/3 as much as you do for same or greater results. I am researching this process myself, so I cannot detail how to minimize the inputs. Love the results. You did a good job explaining your process. Thx.

That's a great idea! If we did it on a larger scale, I might consider it. For now, it doesn't take much time to rinse and drain. :)

How many chickens will one tray feed each day? Great way of doing it, I was thinking 2nd tray myself.
This is mostly just a supplement to their normal feed, so regardless of how many chickens I have in a pen, I will just throw one tray in, and it's gone by the end of the day. My pens range from 5-20 chickens each.

They are in front of a window, but they don't get or need a whole lot of light.

Do you then just take the whole tray out to the chickens daily to consume?
If you pick up The corner, it comes put in a whole “mat”. You can toss the mat on the ground. The ground provides a source of grit as well :)
Could you just use a spray bottle of water & mist the seeds instead of rinsing them day 1-3?
I'm not sure. I've never tried that, but the seeds have to stay thoroughly moist the first few days. If they dry out, their growth will be stunted, or they will die. :(

Is this process less dangerous than jar sprouting as far as bacteria growth goes ?

Toss the seed mat in the coop. Watch with glee. Re-use the tray.

I get them from azurestandard.com. They do a group delivery to a location nearby, and people drive up to pick up what they ordered. They have organic seeds but also groceries, so it's pretty convenient. Otherwise, you can sprout seeds from the feed store, which is probably more cost efficient and easily "sproutable." :)
You can also get seed from a local Feed & Seed store. Amazon has a few farms as well that offer non-GMO untreated grains as well...you can even search for “fodder grains”
my questions to the users and experienced chicken and sheeps farm: Do i need to feed anything besides wheatgrass ? if yes what is it ? Thank you it seems veru little info to none online
It depends on your situation. They can’t only have fodder, but some people only “feed” their chickens fodder. 2-3% of their weight daily is the rule of thumb I believe. If your chickens are able to free range for lots of bugs and seeds etc on a farm and you give table scraps and treats, they’ll probably be good. But, if they’re just living in a small yard without a lot going on then they will need a more substantial feed.
We have 9 Orpington hens on our standard residential lot. They have feed on demand in a 5 Gallon bucket with round 5 holes for their heads at the bottom. They eat through a 40 lb bag of Nutrena layer pellet every 3 weeks, PLUS a warm, cracked- wheat mush every evening in the Fall/Winter months, PLUS they forage all day in the yard for whatever they want. They give us nearly 7 eggs every day. Our night-time Temps get pretty cold here in SE Idaho. But they seem to thrive in spite of it. You get out what you put in, as they say.

Hi, where do you get that feed? I've never seen it at Tracker Supply.
You can get barley seed, or any other grain you want to work with, at any feed & seed or local livestock feed store. If you don’t have any local sources, you can always go to Amazon. Just be very careful to purchase UNTREATED whole seed. If you tell a feed store you need “untreated seed for livestock” they typically know what you mean.

Im having problems with getting mold.. even after straining. Any tips?
It sounds like you may have not been letting the seeds drain enough prior to transferring them to the tray. Skip to 5:15 on her video and she talks about how to prevent mold growth.
i have successfully sprouted for a few months but when temperatures are to warm there just seems to be no stopping the mold i have tried soaking them with a tbsn of bleach or hydrogen peroxide neither really made a difference in my efforts stacking probably also increased the mold if you find a method that works let me know we have to defeat the mold somehow cause my animals love it

Where do you purchase your grains?
I got them from Azure Standard in 50# bags, I think. It's been awhile. :)

How much grain to bird ratio.
You can weigh the grass when it’s grown and ready to eat, the chickens can have 2-3% of their body weight a day.
Is that oats?
Seeds, not berries
Wheat berries are the edible part of the wheat kernel, including the bran, the germ, and the endosperm, before the grain undergoes any processing. :)
Why does my seed always stink even if I wash them
It's normal. Even the Alfalfa seeds we sprout for our own use, typically stink for the 1st couple days before sprouting.
