This was awesome content mate, really good to see something different on the channel. Yes of course we all drool and get insanely jealous of all the German High HP Rocket ships you seem to get on a daily basis but it was getting a bit predictable and formulaic. They all have huge power huge torque have huge top speeds and cost HUGE MONEY that most of us will never have and can only DREAM OF. Honestly speaking, was so refreshing seeing you drive a 20 year old Corolla but most of all witnessing the genuine enjoyment and fun you had while ringing its neck. Sometimes we forget where it all began for most of us, simple cars we could actually afford to buy and work on ourselves, never failing to bring a smile to the driver with a range of addictive sensations we could never tire of. They might have been cheap n simple machines by today's standards, they still brought sheer driving pleasure we remember so fondly

  • @JS-mi4uk

Australian here, driven a similar model Corolla for ~6 years.
The Corolla is the highest selling model of any car in history. It is built for efficiency in every metric. Everything works and it never fails. For this, I love it to bits. Incredibly reliable, practical (I can fit a 6'1 surfboard in the back, easily) fuel efficient and the cost to maintain these things is an absolute joke. I'm talking less than US$70 for a service. It seems like some of Japan's smartest automotive engineers must have been working on this model, considering how much the model is worth to Toyota's business and also, how good the car is for its purpose.
Toyota commissioned Yamaha to design the engine, like they did with the Lexus LFA's V10.
I used to work with a former racing car driver and motorbike rider. He raved about the quality of this car when he had to drive one as a his company car. When I eventually drove one myself, I realised what he was talking about. Mechanics and girlfriends of mine have offered to buy it off me.
The Corolla AE86 is also a legend of 1980s motorsports.
It's not all things to all people, but what it does well, it really is amazing at.
I suggest watching the Top Gear review of the earlier Corolla model. Very interesting.

Here in Australia it's called Corolla Sportivo. I've seen a few around, but most i've seen are not taken care of as much as I'd like. However, the 5 that are currently listed for sale do look really clean. Didn't know about the supercharged version though.
Also there's a 3.5Lsupercharged version of the Camry. Slightly more upmarket Camry to be specific, so it was called the Aurion (TRD, for the supercharged model). They even did a 4.0L Hilux TRD (also supercharged).
Edit: Just found a '92 Corolla FX GT for sale. 118kW from 1.6L, and it doesn't even have VVTL-i, but it does have 20 valves. Only 1080kg, so about 110kW/tonne. Pretty amazing. It's like the old hot hatch no one knows about, maybe if only they did more work with the rest of the car to match its engine.

What's surprising, is how could you have NOT heard of T-Sport? Like, I'm not that far away (Finland) and back in the days it was all about T-Sport vs Type-R :) Eventually I had the facelifted Corolla Compressor myself 10 years ago. I'm glad to see that you got your facts right on the video!

@@eyesrightout a comment i wrote someone some time ago.."i'm not less disappointed of powerful na engines extinction than you are;p..but zz series were already affected by regulations (or stupid toyota decisions, like needless open deck block design n many more) and weren't so robust n reliable like previous toyota engines..and most of engines already after ~'05 and mostly after ~'10 are complete crap..most turbocharged with lots of power in low end, which makes no sense for the manual gearbox driven cars, cos you have no grip on your wheels, due to huge n redundant amount of nm in low rev range..that's why most cars are with automatic transmissions..no fun for any true petrol head..i'm the true na (vtec type) revvy engines and manual transmissions lover, so i hate all new crappy, unreliable n over-complicated engines (with a lifespan of 150-200kkm at best with lots of problems even below 100kkm mark, or even lower), run on water thin oils, with mostly plastic components..so just shut up..but if i had to choose from vtec type engines post '00naughties, i'd definitely chose nissans SR20VE (the most reliable n least sensor equipped one, would be the utimate n all time best vtec-ish engine, if only had their own QR, or honda K series bottom end, crankshaft fixing not with separate caps, but with a one piece aluminium crankshaft holder-bottom end), or i'd chose honda K series (though those had a lot of common problems to ZZ series) engines and only then ZZ series toyota engines - in order of reliability, performance-tuning-wise - firstly K series engines, then SR20VE, and again, only then ZZ series engines..but most likely i'd chose mid-late 90ties also post '00ties 3S-GE (from 3rd to 5th gen.) from toyota instead of ZZ, if i only had such opportunity..cos they were a lot more successful n reliable engines than ZZ series..so zz from toyota was already a downfall in terms of quality n reliability..burned oil, often had piston rings seizure, thin-walled liners, deforming or even cracking sleeves, had lots of problems with chain rattle, looseness n tension, worn cam phaser-actuators gears, n in essence were disposable, one-time-use engines n had faulty design open deck blocks (cos they all are as a design itself)(just like K series n most post '00engines)..3s-ge vteckish n revvy closed deck block design engines were the last good ones from toyota..zz was a downfall n failure..so defend your shit somewhere else;p..n never use a word legendary near the letters ZZ:P"

Got the 99 celica version with the TRD body kit and muffler delete with the 2zzge. my obtainable dream car. Its amazing. a little downside on these cars those is the 6 speed they pair with it is quite weak and the clutch is the same as the 1zzfe so usually after about 230km it needs a clutch replacement and sometimes a snycro replacement around 250km depending on the driving.
Iv been a big honda fan for a few years and im in new zealand and as far as im aware both in nz/aus/US the 2zzge is quite underated its pretty much a weaker but same power as a b18c but for legit half as much if not less.
