Induction of The Ventures

  • From Seattle, The Ventures defined instrumental guitar rock in the 1960s. Their hits bookended the decade, from 1960s Walk Dont Run to 1969s Hawaii Five-O. Nokie Edwards twang-guitar and the crisp rhythm of Don Wilson, bassist Bob Bogle and drummer Mel Taylor gave every Ventures album their trademark bent note sound. Long admired by other bands like the Beatles (and especially George Harrison), Stephen Stills, Joe Walsh, Aerosmith, and others, the Ventures hit the Billboard chart nearly three dozen times in the 1960s. The transparent stereo mixes enabled guitarists to isolate and learn every riff, an idea that fueled 1965s essential instruction LP Play Guitar With the Ventures. Founders of surf rock, the Ventures inspired a classic line of Mosrite guitars and have maintained a flourishing touring and recording career for decades, especially in Europe and Japan.

I can't even begin to speak of the joy these guys have given me - so many great hours grooving to those old vinyl Venture records with the cool covers and dynamic riffs inside! Outside of Jimi Hendrix, I can't imagine who else besides The Ventures has inspired so many kids to buy an electric guitar. That's truly a missing element amongst today's youth, who can inspire the MASSES with a musical instrument? I hope some do and will!

The Ventures got me my first gig in Japan in the 70's and I'm still here. Have years of fond memories hanging on their Japan tours, jamming with Nokie around town. They are still the most famous, successful foreign group to tour Japan. I love these guys.

These guys launched & inspired more guitar players than any rock band in history. I know! almost 50 years ago.I bought me a guitar and learned to play wearing out their first 4 albums. And Millions of future super stars cut their teeth on them.
While alot of people don't know it but anytime group plays electric guitar on stage... Their influence on is these guys.
It is a crime that it took so long .. They should have been in the first wave of inducties.

Great music-and what a show! As to their selection of songs to play- well , " you dance with the person that brought you there." "Walk..." and "Hawaii..." were two of their biggest hits, and the ones that everyone knows; if not from the radio, then from the tv show." Book 'em, Dan-o"

In America, excepting The Beatles, I'd say that the Ventures inspired more kids to pick up a guitar, bass or drum set than probably any other band. And to inspire so tremendously with pure instrumentals, is a grand testament to their innovative, always rocking sound! They were always special, and really knew how to make a rock 'n roll combo all that it should be. Such fun, so cool. And just when their vintage sound had become nostalgic, New Wave kicked in and gave them a whole new audience.

Wow! This video couldn't be done any better . A wonderful tribute to Bob Bogle and Mel Taylor (reqs) and the other Ventures (Nokie Edwards, Gerry McGee, Bob Spalding and Leon Taylor and others who lent a hand to the Ventures' legacy). The full orchestra
arrangement of Hawaii-Five-O really rocked the house.

Actually, Jerry joined in 1969 on an album titled "The Horse." Him and Nokie have switched back and forth for years. There have actually been tours where Bogle didn't attend while Nokie and Jerry shared the bass/lead guitar duties.

What a shame Mel Taylor didn't live to be part of this. I was going to say honor but let's face it, the RROH is bullshit. Even so, they deserve the recognition. For those wondering about Nokie playing bass on Walk Don't Run, he did so on the hit, Bob Bogel played the lead on his Jazzmaster, and Don Wilson played as ever rhythm guitar. I met all of them except Mel and they are great guys.

  • @49kasey

The Ventures were the prime influence of SO many musicians of the 1960's and it's amazing and a great discredit to the R&RHOF that it took them until 2008 to do this. No offense to Gerry McGee (what happened to him, anyone know?) but the period between 1963 and 1968 while Nokie Edwards was on lead guitar was their greatest. Listen to "Ventures in Space" or "Walk Don't Run '64" or "The Fabulous Ventures" and you'll see what I mean. This was the dawn of what rock guitar was to become. Fundamental.

No, they were not from Seattle. They were from Tacoma, WA! It even says so in your video. My elder brother, Jim McCurdy, was with them at the beginning as a drummer and then lost out on the chance of a lifetime by being called back into the U.S. Army in Kennedy's big call-up. I have a note to my bro signed by all the Ventures when I met them backstage at Southern Oregon College in about 1966. They remembered him fondly and wanted me to tell him they would love to see him.

@49kasey What happened to Gerry McGee? He's been the Ventures lead guitar player since 1984 and has been for more years than Nokie. He plays lead on the V's annual summer tour of Japan, which is the band's big money maker. Check him out in plenty of videos on youtube, especially "Surf on Guitar 98".

The guy who wrote the Ventures book told me that Gerry refused to attend the induction, saying he didn't think they were a Rock 'n Roll band. But he wasn't allowed to put that in the book. Sure enough, a week after the Ventures induction, Gerry's Hall of Fame award was sold on eBay by his son.
