  • Wildlife Photography Tips - The Iconic shot! In this video, I capture one of Wildlife's most Iconic Shots, THE PUFFIN & FISH
This week I ventured to Seahouses which is a small fishing village situated in Northumberland National Park on Englands North East Coast. Seahouses is a gateway to the Farne Islands. There are many boating companies that offer trips to witness the magnificence of the Islands from the various coastlines. You can even land on a couple of the Islands too.
This time is very special for enthusiasts of the beautifully coloured bird that is the Puffin! In July their single egg has hatched and the chick needs feeding. Both the male and female puffin take turns bringing fish. The adults feed the chick fish for approximately 45 days. If you want to capture the iconic Puffin shot with the fish in its beak, you better be quick!
This is where the boat companies come into their own. They offer special trips to the Farne Islands for photographers and Wildlife enthusiasts alike.
I'm a frequent user of one such company which I can't recommend highly enough. "Serenity Farne Islands Boat Tours" (tinyurl.com/yc...) I know the skipper Andrew quite well. He and his staff are very informative and I guarantee you won't be disappointed with your trip.
I hope you like the video. All comments are welcome

Hi Gary I have just returned from a recent trip to the UK. We wife and I did the Farne Island boat trip but unfortunately didn't get to land. still got some terrific shots though. We did manage to get on the isle of May which was an absolute awesome experience. I have a Nikon D5600 with a Tampon 18-400 lens which I really got to test out. I call myself an accidental photographer and lucky if they turn out but I enjoy every minute of. This video and the advice you gave really helped so thank you so much. Regards Phil

Nice explanation of your settings for capturing birds in flight. I really thought you'd mention the odor of guano on the islands! :). If it is anything like our sea lion rookeries it is sure "noteworthy"!

    • @GaryGough
      @GaryGough  6 ปีที่แล้ว

I didn't notice it over my own odour, I really must take a shower :) I should of mentioned it, it stunk :)

Cracking images! Pleasure to watch. I used similar settings. Shutter 2000 and set it in shutter priority. First time I've used shutter priority but seemed fitting. Varied my iso to fit.
They certainly are tricky to shoot but it's fun. Like a shooting game

    Gary,
Ah, Puffins, the cutest of the seabirds!!
    But, are they tasty?
The slight overcast really saturates those colors, but the vivid color seems to also manifest in the sun. Great! The eye-level tip is gold. The gesture of the birds in your shots is very well chosen, my friend.
Unfortunately, having played (American) football in my youth, my knees are like broken glass. So, my eye-level shots are restricted to Moas, Ostriches, Grizzlies, , Apes, and Musk Oxen.
The Puffins in flight-shots have a "painterly" quality that is very fetching.
And, uh, your beak looks a bit "orange." I wonder if that's a residual manifestation of your recent nose-ground interface, or are you, uh, you-know, uh ...mating?
    Thank-You,
    Mike

Brilliant, Gary, to tell us your settings used.
One question though (for the in-flight bird photography): why the one step over exposure?
Okay, two questions ;-) What metering method you use?
    Thanks for your insights!

Hello Gary, and a very well done indeed! You got some spectacular shots indeed and they are definitely keepers'. Lots of very good advice also included. Looks like you had a fabulous day. Got some good flight shots of Puffins and some others. Got a really nice shot of a Puffin being robbed by three black headed gulls :) Your photos however were amazing. I want to change my Sigma 150-500 to a Nikon 200-500. The Arctic Terns were interesting! I'm off to France, Belgium and on to Switzerland in less than two weeks. I have planned another two week war tour but will focus mainly on 360 VR photos/video this time.

Love the Farne islands, went about a month ago, but the birds were just pairing up & nest building no iconic mouth full of sand eels shots, fantastic little birds & bloody fast, so difficult to catch in flight. You managed some great shots. Think I'll have to give the islands another visit.

Great video Gary full of excellent advice, especially that tip with adding some exposure comp, I always seem to forget that for the first 20 frames or so, over enthusiasm I guess. Did the Terns give you any battle scars that you can brag about? They took a few chunks out of me, no hat lesson learned for next time, or a crash helmet ;)

Enjoyed the video Gary. Off to Northumberland next week and programming in a visit to the Farne Islands. I have been before and am looking for that iconic in flight shot of the puffin with sand eels in its beak - yours were great - no jealousy here!! It would be so easy if they didn't fly like exocet missiles. I shoot Canon and will be using a 7D Mk2 and a 100-400 L (Mk 1). It looks like you were shooting with the Mark 2. How much post processing was involved and did you shoot in RAW?

    • @GaryGough

Mike Kerry - missiles indeed 😁. Not much post processing to be honest and I always shoot in RAW. Cheers Mike 👍🏻

Top tip ought to be "don't hold the bird there too long, it isn't posing for photographs, it's waiting for you to bugger off so it can take those sand eels to it's young in the burrow behind you" ;)

As well as the hat sounded like you needed some ear muffs!! Love the shot of the puffin coming into land with his feet down...awesome.

Gary just came across this great video of yours when looking for advice on photographing the birds on the Farne Islands - I'm off there a week on Saturday. It's been very informative but one question - what's the best lens size? would a 70-200 f2.8 crack it or do I need to take something bigger with me? (and my rain jacket is bright red too !)

100 - 400 lens, is what Gary was using

Wicked shots!! Bringing back memories of my trip to Skomer this year. Had two shots in mind and managed to get them both. Puffins are amazing little birds but buggers to get when they are flying.

Puffins are on my bucket list; such a beautiful little bird and a challenge to get a good shot. Just got back from camping and getting shots of 1000s of terns and gulls. Some good advice as well with learning information on the topic of your shots. Too many want to just arrive and take the shot. You need to be patient and pay attention and the rewards are fantastic.

Reminds me of my week on the Isle of May (found in the Firth of Forth) last year. I was lucky enough to spend a week on location and photograph the seabird population. The Puffin were always the star attraction with the day trippers but we had everything from Terns to Shags so you could try out different skills on the different species. Brilliant tips, and loved the vlog.

Camo clothing is essential kit because it conceals bird droppings. I've been bombarded by flying foxes on a few occasions and it's messy work. Great vlog Gary and the images are stunning. Greg

Hi Gary. Fabulous video ! So glad you covered wildlife photography because it's much harder than a lot of people think. Capturing birds in flight to the standard you've achieved here is bloody difficult, so credit to you for getting such brilliant shots. Had to laugh at the red jacket versus the camouflage gear bit - doesn't make a blind bit of difference at these locations does it ! Cracking video Gary. Many thanks for sharing.

Wow, great vid and great photos! I have a question. I was also thinking about going to Farne Islands. What is the best period for the first time to go there? I would like to take some shots of the younglings. Cheers!

    • @GaryGough
      @GaryGough  5 ปีที่แล้ว

May and Jun are when they feed their young. Their beaks are the familiar orange colour then too. You won't see their young ones because they nest underground.

Great episode Gary. Love the puffins and for a number of years went to Skomer although not been for the last couple, it's a great day out. Some belting images buddy and some great advice for shooting them, the puffins with sand eels is a classic but I had not seen a shot of a razorbill with sand eels before - cool stuff.
