    In this video we show you how to make a basic Top Lit Up Draft Biochar Machine. Warm Heart have been teaching hundreds of farmers in the Northern Thailand how to make these machines in order to help reduce the smoke produced in the area.
    We aim to restore the environment while creating economic development opportunities by teaching farmers sustainable agricultural practices and developing the new technology they need.
    Decades of strip-cut logging, traditional flooded paddy rice propagation, field burning, over farming and heavy use of fertilizers have destroyed Phrao’s once vibrant ecosystem.
    Mountainsides are scarred by steep, barren corn fields and the valley’s exhausted soils force farmers to depend heavily on artificial fertilizers. These chemicals are now destroying soil fertility, poisoning fish ponds and no longer stimulating the yields they once did, while squeezing farmers’ slim profits with their high costs.

    After 2 years, my only suggestion would be to just place your chimney on the top of the barrel and trace the circle around it, and to drench the burning biochar when the flames are just barely above the biochar. That is the perfect timing of when to shut it off.

    I made this burner and used it to burn sticks stripped by goat cut to barrel length and packed tightly with wood chips filling the empty spaces. I neglected to dowse and it all burned to a small amount of ash. I'm about to try again. Not sure if I should damper it of this time somehow after ignition because my last firing burned so furiously.

    I've done it with pine wood with a variety of sizes mostly offcuts. It was difficult to say when it was done. Took a good few hours to burn down

    There is quit a bit of talk about Metal fume fever. Exposure usually arises through hot metalworking processes, such as smelting and casting of zinc alloys, welding of galvanized metals, brazing, or soldering. If the metal concerned is particularly high-risk, the residue from cold sanding processes may also cause fume fever, even if the dose is lower. Occurs by inhaling metal oxide fumes that injure the lung.
    Prevention of metal fume fever in workers who are at risk (such as welders) involves avoidance of direct contact with potentially toxic fumes, improved engineering controls (exhaust ventilation systems)...

    Your roof sheeting is zinc plated and is exposed to open flame. Isn't burning zinc coated materials dangerous or poisonous?

      If you inhale the fumes you get metal fume fever: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_fume_fever

      Welders have to deal with this all the time, and they can’t take zinc poisoning!

    I don't know anyone who has access to these specialized tools. The barrel might be easy to obtain for someone with lots of privilege, but the only piece of this equipment that I can get hold of is the string...

    • @stephenho6007
      @stephenho6007 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stay positive, do not let the challenges stop your great mission. Angle grinder from Harbor Freight tool is $9.99 to $20 depends on sales or not, a 4" grinder disc is $1 each, steel barrel can be bought looking into local ads, like craigslist, about $20-40 per. Now do not complain, just do it.

    • @georgiadegroot3467
      @georgiadegroot3467 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      also, check if in your area there is a tool library - they are growing in popularity. Just put the call out for someone to lend you one - especially as it is for a good cause! Good luck

    • @danr308
      @danr308 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good. We keep all good things from dorks like you that can't scrounge up a few bucks and a free barrel. Don't even bother to think you could borrow the tools either. No one would lend them to you! Your sad sack would steal them.

  • @WadcaWymiaru
    @WadcaWymiaru 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would add some informations:
    the barrel steel must be rust-ressistand, if not it will crumble after 4 use...
    use smaller barel as char-generator inside the bigger that work as stove and burn until ash.
    everything inside should be fried to the crisp. After one hour.
    Do not open, and wait until you can touch the can.
    For safety reasons because water can...explode...
    Now mix with the soil in one to 10 or one to 6 for grass plants.

    • @johns7713
      @johns7713 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you burn until ash you get ash, not biochar. That misses the whole point. Ash is very alkaline and produces no homes for microbes. It is no longer biochar.

    • @WadcaWymiaru
      @WadcaWymiaru 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johns7713
      This is WHY the oxygen should be shut-off from the barrel inside that is burning volatile pyrolise products. It work.
      P.S. Because bochar is alcaline and without nitrogen, you need to pee on it. Wastewater is enough. Then put to the ground.
