    Belly dancing is sexy, fun, and burns up a lot of calories to boot! In this video, belly dancer Irina Akulenko teaches you how to isolate lower abs. You'll be shaking it like Shakira in no time.
    Now let's try isolating our lower abs only. Keeping the knees bent, tailbone down, chest lifted, shoulders back, arms out. You're going to contract about an inch below the belly button to pull the muscles in. In the beginning you might try to rotate the hips under which is fine so just find that isolation, but ideally you want this to be a purely muscular movement that does not compromise a normal position. So in the beginning let's just rotate the hips under contracting in, and release, and in, and release, and make sure that when you release you do not untuck your tailbone back, you wanna make sure that your back stays straight even when you uncurl to come back to neutral position. So let's try that with music. Now try to isolate just the lower ab muscles, do not move your hips, so the hip bones will actually remain neutral. Trying to contract just the lower abs, pulling in, and release, in, and release. And a little bit faster. While you're isolating keep the upper abs relaxed. And faster. That's how you isolate your lower abs.

    I’ve been through multiple abdominal surgeries, and have a complete wall of mesh covering my stomach. I was suffering with brutal, horrid pain from abdominal adhesions. This simple isolation exercise recommended by my PT has ended all the abdominal adhesion attacks! A life changer for me.

    For anyone struggling, it helps me to push my fingers in my upper and lower abs respectively and try to push out only one. It definitely helps me identify which is which!

    I don’t even know if there is anything to contract below my belly button, no matter how much I try to squeeze & contract from my stomach with all I got, everything pulls in only from the upper abs. I’m disappointed cuz people said that “anyone can learn to belly dance” but this truly seems impossible for me cuz I can’t even find any feeling of “lower abs” so I don’t see how I could even practice this

      @Gail I read that you need to use your ribcage to isolate your upper abs, but almost everyone struggles more with the upper than the lower abs so it´s probably a practice-thing and you will dance amazing in a few month :)

    how can I make sure that the upper abs are not engaged in this movement? my upper abs always move :( when I try to contract the lower abs

    Everybody is saying that it's harder to contract the lower abs but for me the upper abs are harder because you nedd to pull your whole ribcage. Lower abs are actually quite easy for me.
