"Man, i hate how most shooter games these days look and play the same" "Hmmm, this shooter game looks and plays differently from other shooter games. I dont like that"
and thats why people like the games he mentioned at the start! overwatch val and apex are a bit more colorful and unique but not liek splatoon where its super cartoony. but idk kinda dumb lol people should realize just because kids can play it doesnt mean they only should.
@@macaroni8 do they want squids and octopus that evolved and look 100% like humans? That wouldn't work and it wouldn't make sense tbh, they gonna have their differences, and the design wouldn't work with realistic graphics as that would make Splatoon a horror game prob
Hellll yes People have to learn to see past kid-friendly design choices and just enjoy games for what they are, and Splatoon is a prime example of this It's such a fun game that people simply refuse to play because it also markets towards younger audiences
Luckily I think we're living in an age where more and more people are starting to realize that not giving something a chance because "it's made for kids" is stupid.
You forgot the most revolutionary part of it being a modern shooter: NO MAINSTREAM MICROTRANSACTIONS! There is a paid Dlc that will have a fully unique storymode and unlike overwatch 2 there is actual faith that they can fully finish it. There are amiibo for some cosmetics, but at least you get a physical figurine (that can used for other games) for your purchase!
With how blizzard is these days, it was only a matter of time before overwatch’s PvE would be cancelled. The splatoon dev team proved that they can both develop a massive paid DLC and give regular updates at the same time, I have hope the side order will help splatoon grow bigger than it has been.
Nintendo is actually pretty good about not doing this because they still have the philosophy of finishing a game before releasing it. Except for sports games... BTW Pokémon is not part of Nintendo, despite being a Nintendo-exclusive series.
It’s a shame people see Splatoon as “cartoony and for kids” just because it’s attached to Nintendo when Fortnite is just as animated and has a reputation of being full of kids playing it but is one of the most played shooters in the world. The game is great and I wish more people would give it a shot.
@@noelleonhartn top of this point (which is very important btw), Fortnite also IS seen as too cartoony and kid like as of today. It was very popular in its prime with all audiences, but now it has an even bigger "childlike" stigma than even Splatoon does
@@noelleonhartit’s free and it’s available on like every platform, so that just goes to show people WILL adopt kids games as mainstream, if they’re accessible enough.
@@mutedmutiny9542 except that in order to customize your avatar and such you have to use V-bucks, which have to be obtained by microtransactions with real money. Splatoon on the other hand you can earn cash by playing in battles.
Yes! Splatoon isn’t just for kids! Under the surface you can clearly see the game has complex mechanics and worldbuilding, amazing storytelling, great designs, etc etc. it’s not just some eye candy brain rot for kids, anyone is able to enjoy it because it’s genuinely a strong game in a lot of different ways
I'd also say that the lore has some very dark parts. For example, the entire history of the world to this moment is canon. After that, there will be 3 more world wars until most of humanity dies in world war five(I think that was the right number). The plans of the two latest villains was genocide to bring back mammals/make the ultimate species out of the dna of the current dominant species. Then there is little judd who is a clone of judd and wants to kill and replace him. Some of the lore is pretty weird tbh.
also the facts that said villains are analogous to our current state of diplomacy anyway. if you look deep enough, there are sinister things that adults can enjoy and even increase their intellect with
Its one of the underrated games that is actually fun and has developed over the years into something any one can enjoy, no mater if you're a kid or not. Its a 12/10 in my likings😁
As someone who has played all 3 games, starting with splatoon 1 at the age of 14... This game is literaly so fun and motion controls takes my aim from a 5 to a 9
I’ve been playing since April 2019, but I never actually got Nintendo online, so I just played the single player-campaign for like 3 years until I randomly decided “Hey, I should get Nintendo online so I can actually play multiplayer battles” in June 2022.
I kinda grew up with Splatoon but I never understood why gyro aiming has never been a standard in shooter games. It's such a great solution to aim assist complaints, and way more versatile than just the stick alone
A lot of the reason will be precedent. When the first shooter games were made the only option for aiming on a controller was sticks, motion controls just weren't a viable option. So the shooter fanbase got used to sticks controls, and then any new shooter released would cater to that audience, and make it with sticks
There are a few reasons. One is the early age of wii/xbox kinect and that playstation one. So people think you have to move your whole body to use it. So misinformation Second is the fear of having to try something new while also having to give up aim assist. People are just way too used to it so they don't want to give it up. Another is that xbox controllers still don't have gyro. So devs won't implement it since xbox players won't have it and the fact that ps and xbox players won't ask for it. But more triple a games are slowly getting gyro settings do we'll see what the future holds
@@F1areon that's the reason camera resets relative to your left stick inclination and the stick can still be used horizontally. It's learnable if you do it at your own pace and will definitely save you wrist pain if done correctly, especially when playing with high sensitivity
@@QuickQwack Yeah but w/ my muscle disorder, that wouldn't really do much in the long run; my wrists and arms would still eventually hurt bc I physically can't do that kinda stuff as long as others are able to :S
I think the problem is that as soon as a shooter player sees that Splatoon has more than 3 colors in its color palette, they immediately think: "It's just a game for little kids".
@@dreamsdeep1076 this. like for myself i just cannot play those hyper realistic games as easily like the lack of color literally makes me unable to have fun because i just cannot see jack shit. like if your color palette is dark dank cave, rocky mountain, and baby puke green everything will look the same. and for me that just takes out half of my vision cuz i cannot tell you if that baby puke green spot in the distance is a trash can or a person. so i just end up sitting closer to the screen than your nan trying to read a meme you've just showed her and still get clocked in the head cuz for some reason someone else has managed to distinguish my baby puke green from rocky mountain but i'm still sitting there like HOW WHERE WHAT. and just end up annoyed cuz no matter what i try i just cannot see shit and i only end up dieing and not having any fun whatshowever. like even with non shooters i just tend to struggle with "realistic" games cuz they always decide to add sections where it's darker than satan's arsehole and i once again lean in like an angry grandpa squinting like someone who has just looked directly into the sun then dieing cuz they decided oh let's add a fucking hole or cliff you can fall down in this dark ass corner.
As someone who grew up with Call of Duty and Doom, i can say that Splatoon is definitely one of the best games i've ever played in terms of pure fun. It is sad how people judge it from it's looks and controls without even thinking first. I currently have somewhere around 300h in splatoon 3 and i recommend it to literally anyone (coming from a veteran of Doom and CoD).
The same thing happens with the Spider-Verse movies. I know so many people who don't want to watch the Spider-Verse movies just because they're animated. It's honestly just becoming sad how people think being "mature" is the same as not having fun in life.
@@crezna i agree on the spiderverse thing. that reason to skip it is stupid. instead; give an actual reason, which is not to support the producers for pushing their workers to literal death to make said movie.
@crezna my dad is one of them. He thought Spiderverse was “a boring cartoon” or whatever and like he wasn’t showing hate but like he just didn’t want to give it a chance
There is also Salmon run wich is a pve style of game wich is quite fun and puts a whole new perspective on how to play and work with a team. There is also the in game events Splatfest, big run ect. That really brings the game alive and makes the world feel more real and more alive.
I love the points about Nintendo. People always say Nintendo sucks because their system isn’t as good or they don’t make good decisions or whatever. But I can’t stress this enough: GAMING IS ABOUT THE GAMES. And Nintendo absolutely delivers in that category
@@fragmentedrose7401 IDK if I'd say bad, but yes, their consoles using older less expensive technology than their competitors means they can both sell their consoles for a lower price, AND use the money earned from console sales to reinvest into making quality games. Sony and Microsoft mostly make losses whenever they make new consoles due to selling the consoles for less than it cost to build them in the hopes of recouperating the cost via other investments.
If you only think about that, then take a submarine and go to 4800 MTS under the sea and if something goes wrong, be happy because it is part of the experience. You have to be aware and know and act when someone does things wrong, and Nintendo is known for doing them very badly. For people like you to charge $70 for poorly made games with micropayments
@damianateiro $60/70 is absurd, and it is a lot of money. If a game release unfinished, broken, buggy/glitchy messes, or micro transactions infested, I will be disappointed.
@@keeganmcfarland7507 it's not like Nintendo is the only company that releases $70 unfinished games though. That's just a problem with the industry in general.
its a little funny to think of splatoon not being mainstream, cause while its def true for western circles but ive heard its way more popular and competitive in places like japan
Japan is super competitive. For 5 years I’ve feared Japanese splatoon players. I’ve rarely been able to compete with Japanese players. They have advertisements for this game everywhere in Japan. It’s a big deal over there.
i personally believe splatoon never becoming main stream is both its greatest strength and weakness. it allows the community to be more home grown and have a more family vibe to it instead of just being a corporate thing used for money. but thats just me personally lol
I mean its already one of the biggest most mainstream videogames in Japan, but yes outside of Japan it hasnt taken off to nearly the same extent and is even somewhat niche. I think what would really be nice is if Splatoon isn't neccesarily seen as like the king of its genre, but more so as an equal player to other shooters with a similar interest.
One thing I personally find notable is the fact that (to my knowledge) splatoon 3 is the #1 esport in Japan and is far more popular there than it is in the west. I personally believe this is due to a) nintendo being jp based b) Japan is a tiny ass island where all the best players have easy internet connection to eachother (whereas the west could have to play from the west coast of na to Europe) There’s likely more reasons but in essence splatoon is way more popular in jp than the west Edit: also unless I’m wrong but isn’t Japan responsible for like 90% of splatoon 3 sales?
There are actually a lot of people in their 20’s that play this game and I’m really glad. Splatoon although far from perfect is really creative and unique with its gameplay and overall functionality and that’s one thing I will always praise the series for.
I started with Splatoon 1 when I was already well into my 20's. I also met people who were 30+ when I started playing. There are people of all ages if you know where to look.
Can we talk about how a game like splatoon inspired so many companies to make their own unique game like square with foamstar and gung ho with ninjala splatoon series made a huge impact
@@Style_224 even though it isn’t an exact copy, I will still be kinda sad if foamstars becomes more popular than Splatoon without Splatoon being recognized. But that’s just my opinion, I guess.
The difference between those games is that Ninjala is a genuinely fun game that got done dirty (RIP you gum shooting masterpiece) and foamstars is splatoon at home
As a longtime fan, Splatoon being made by Nintendo is both a blessing and a curse, I think Nintendo has horrible online problems (Especially in Splatoon 3) and it's probally never going to be on pc, but I think this game is so unique I don't think any other game company would make this kind of game.
I like to think for the most part people are becoming less judgmental about game others play. Obviously there are some exceptions to this (looking at you twitter and reddit) but for the most part, i don't have to feel embarrassed about liking nintendo games anymore (even if the company itself is beyond terrible). Honestly, everything in this video was spot on. You got a sub out of me
I read one time "Distinguish the art from the artist" and I've always gone by with that ideology. Liking something and liking the author are two distinct things.
What sets Splatoon so apart for me is the inking turf. Your weapon isn't JUST for splatting people. Even if you miss terribly, never land a hit, you're STILL inking turf which they can't walk in. That is something you just. Do Not Get. in any other game
One of the best things about Splatoon and its community is especially how inclusive it is. Many LQBTQ+ and neurodivigerent people can find it difficult to feel welcome in competitive gaming communities, but Splatoon's community is extremely inclusive and has fantastic representation even all the way up to the highest levels of pro play.
I think this and there not being automatic vc in matches are awesome. If you're playing with friends there are plenty of other ways to call them and if not then it's basically never worth hearing raging 6yo anyway
My favorite is getting that Android user experience of other shooters thinking they've innovated but then to find out Splat did it first, like you said Fortnight adding Gyro, Overwatch's push mode thats basically just tower, that one "What if you could see Snipers line of sight?!?!?" trend a while back, etc.
As someone who has delved into the competitive scene and been involved in playing it more seriously, this game gets way too much flack for its kidlike style, the game has some incredible nuance and skill as well as team composition and fluid movement that make it such a treat to dive into. I wish Nintendo would support their competitive scenes in games but I understand why they don't. Doesn't mean the game isn't an absolute gem for anyone who enjoys the pace and energy of a good match!
@@serpentmaster1323 it’s a lot more they don’t acknowledge and actively hunt us like they do smash. Splatoon kinda sits quietly and does it’s own thing. A lot of the small leagues aren’t as noticed and just kinda go as they may.
I already played it. The video is a lie. >:( On a more serious note, great video. Whenever people make fun of Splatoon, I always tell them I play it because it's a shooter with the most unique mechanic maybe ever released: ink. I loved Splatoon when I was a young teen and still enjoy it. I'm not that good at most shooter games, but I enjoy Splatoon so I feel like I do better because of that.
It's funny when i ask the people who make fun of splatoon : "So you played it ?" And they are just saying random bs to defend themself (Also these people get VERY upset when you say bad things about their favorite game >:] )
“It took Nintendo over 30 years after they started making video games to make a shooter” Excuse me, Duck Hunt for the NES is the peak of the shooter genre.
I got my mom hooked on splatoon 3’s story mode. She says she loves the movement and story even when she hasn’t played the main turf war. Just shows how fun it can be without even looking at the main modes.
Unfortunately you didn't mention the PvE gamemode Salmon Run. It's my absolutely favorite mode in the game and with the whole Overwatch 2 PvE drama we know that people want a good multiplayer PvE shooter.
i was considering mentioning it but it doesnt really have any substance as far as pushing players away from the game, so i decided to leave it out. if anyone picks up the game cause of this vid theyll have a nice surprise :)
It’s stupid that anything that isn’t soulless and colourless is instantly “for kids”. In Japan this game os extremely popular, not all of the players there are “kids”!
Don't let the bright colors fool you. This game is one of the most competitive shooter games out there. It relies on motion controls, positioning, and knowing when and where to push. You can also play it casually too and the community is one of the best I've ever been a part of. Oh yeah and it has super complicated and dark lore too
As a competitive player, thank you SO MUCH for making this video. I can't help but scream at my friends to PLEAASE GIVE THE GAME A TRY!!! Hopefully thisll persuade that extra people BC the competitive scene is actually so sad :')
You forgot to mention Salmon Run. For me, it’s the best part of the game. It reminds me of COD Black Ops Zombies, to which I lost many hours and was the best bit of that game too (imo). It’s fast paced, gets absolutely mental in higher ranks and the music is phenomenal! As a guy nearly in my 40s, there’s nothing I like more than going online with a few of my mates and destroying an onslaught of weird fish.
love me some cod zombies, didn't mention salmon as it wouldn't add too much substance to the vid but I prolly should have said at least smth looking back
Is it? Game's marketing has a lot of backing up behind it, with each season getting a new trailer and the splatfests are huge events with crossovers with other more popular nintendo IPs like pokemon or zelda, hell we got spongebob and transformers one time. Not to mention getting multiplayer GOTY last year. People are just turned off from the colorful visuals and child friendly exterior, even though the game is very technical and skill demanding to do well. Also gyro aiming takes some time to get use to
So, my opinion as someone who played A TON of Fortnite (not a super traditional shooter, but still sticks to death match, etc etc): switching from that game to Splatoon was one of the best decisions I could've made for personal enjoyment of video games. I am not good at shooters at all (I played fornite for years but still had the controls of a newer player), and it was getting extremely frustrating being so bad, and yes I had a lot of fun, but I eventually got bored with the "to the death" kind of thing and often found myself playing creative mode, where I could have a different experience. Splatoon 2 & 3 were completely innovative for me. I found the slosher class relatively early in play, and I think it ties in what you said about variety, it suited me great! I have bad aim, and like high/moderate damage weapons, so something that helped me elevate at my strengths and make what would've been a fatal weakness in other games, not as bad and something that could be fixed in this game. I'm still not great or anything, being at S right now, but I've been playing for a few months and have learned all the lore, and it has been THE experience. My point is, to everyone that plays traditional shooters, just give Splatoon a chance, it's truly something special
literally this. i can't survive 2 seconds in a regular shooter, so i get bored since most of my time is spent DEAD. here it's pretty rare, and my friends and i have even WON matches against heavy spawn campers before. ain't nobody got a shiny dime on Splatoon (except maybe the Meowscles stuff from Fortnite, but I'm biased toward cats)
Splatoon is made to be kdis friendly but i never really felt like it was made FOR kids honestly The lore, fan service and stuffs like that show that they actually understand the fans
"you go from the typical shooter to a *fucking umbrella* " man, this was a super fun review. i sometimes forget that at its core, splatoon is ABSOLUTELY a shooter, which sometimes gets lost in the *sea* of lore and a sense of world in the game. idols, brands, story mode... there's so much to this game, and so much thought in every nook and cranny. hell, THE IN GAME MUSIC BANDS HAVE LORE !!! this was a really nice view and introduction for people who lean more towards the "traditional" style of shooter games. underneath that kid-friendly, colourful shell is a super competitive and intricate game with a little bit of something for literally EVERYONE - as advertised.
As for a lot to do? I've played it for 180 hours so far and still have a ton to learn. It's a very intense shooter. Besides the many Ranked modes, they've introduced Challenges that switch things up (I wish they had more time slots), they have a PvE Salmon Run always available, and a 30 hour single player campaign which is perfect to learn Motion Controls. I also love the vibrant, detailed universe.
I had never played a single splatoon game, however i decided to pick up splat 3. Genuinely one of the best times ive gotten out of a shooter game. Its super creative, it has a wide arsenal, and the motion controls feel very nice. It should definitely get more recognition, but i think the smaller community is better for the game.
As someone whose only shooters are the Splatoon and PvZ Garden Warfare series (and has never been very interested in realistic gritty games), they are super cool. Sadly I now suck at aiming without motion controls...
I feel what make a lot of people not like the game is the controls cause most people gave it one game and then just switch to sticks Also it so fun to see people who play normal shooters react to how competitive and fast paced a game of splatoon is
I remember the first time I saw Splatoon 1 in 2015... it wasn't that weird TV ad, it wasn't from any kiosks in gamestop or other electronics stores, heck, it wasn't even off of TH-camrs who got the game in May of 2015... nah. I found out about the first game thanks to a FULL COLOR AD on the last page of a gameinformer magazine. Love at first sight? I call it a Soul to Soul match; I was HOOKED. I looked into everything regarding the game: splatfests, regular battles, ranked, story mode (no spoilers somehow!), weapons, specials, clothes and gear, and even lesser known lore at the time. I couldn't stop talking about it in school and anyone that was my friend got annoyed from this obsession lol. It was such a dream to play since I didn't have a Wii U and the game... X-mas that year I finally got the game and a Wii-U, and I proceeded to spend 2,000+ hours on that game from start to finish. I never, EVER, have had as much fun with any game before and Splatoon 1 will forever be THAT game that sits as number 1 for all time best game. Nowadays, with Splatoon 3, I don't play as much because of several glaring issues (we all know 90% of the maps suck, let's not pretend they're good, and the matchmaking is utter squid feces). It surprises me that so few people really know about this franchise after 8 years, and the fact its reputation is nothing more than a "kids game" after all this time really bothers me. This franchise is sooo rich with personality, style, and character; it's part of why I love this game sooo much because almost no other game made by a big-name studio comes close to the same level that Splatoon is on. I hope Splatoon 3 can be fixed with major stage renovations, potential changes to certain weapon kits, a better update schedule, and a few other nagging things that can be ironed out because this game is currently at its highest point technically but also striking a major low. There's huge hidden potential in this game and I'd love to have a real reason to purposefully dump another 2,000 hours into it if they can manage to realize that potential.
@@maplemiles3381 I'm going to simply say that the fact you haven't seen anyone complaining about the game's main issues is insane. If I may, I would like to bring forth said issues to you since it seems you're unaware of them. Of course, some of this is opinionated, but I have seen many, many players complaining about similar issues this game has. Let's start with the map design real quick. All "original" Splatoon 3 maps are straight corridors or tetromino layouts that are mostly flat in elevation, lack any interesting gimmicks or utilize the new movement tech in clever ways, and worst of all, have no flank routes, and this is awful from a design standpoint, and both boring and frustrating from a gameplay standpoint. If you and other people enjoy those maps, power to you all, but I've seen tons of people complain about it, not just here in the west but also over in japan. These maps are mostly wasted potential unless they redesign them from the ground up in some cases. Matchmaking is quite literally the biggest dice roll in this game that's never in your favor. I remember joining turf war games in late Splatoon 1 and through all of Splatoon 2 where I could actually ink the ground, and it was mostly relaxing and super fun. Splatoon 3? Every match I enter I have to it'll be an easy one where I can relax a little bit. Either the enemy team is composed of super hyper extra x rank pros, or my team is insanely incompetent, and this forces me to play hard just to not lose, and it's not fun. Couple this matchmaking that seems to be non-existent in terms of levelling out the skill gaps between teams along with the awful map design, and it really drags the entire experience down as a whole. I've seen multiple people complain about this and it's obvious this isn't just a personal issue. Content updates! While the actual seasonal updates themselves are mostly okay with the content they bring, the problem is that 3-month long period between major content updates where the first month is nice and juicy since everyone's trying out new weapons, going for gear, e.t.c... but it then becomes super stale and dry for the remainder of the time after. What incentives are there for me, a long-time veteran of the franchise, to come back and play the game... Splatfests? I love the aesthetic and vibe this event brings, but considering the horrible map design and the fact it's a three-day event, I'm out once I reach the max rank which takes less than a hour usually. What other reason do I have to keep playing when It won't get me anything else until the event ends outside of wasting time. Big runs? Over glorified leaderboards and honestly, they hyped it up to be something special when it really isn't. I guess the rewards might be worth spending a day on it for since it's cash, meal tickets, and other things. The new challenges battle they recently introduced? I couldn't participate in any of the recent ones because I have a job that takes up the times they were on for, OR, they're at times that I'd NEVER be awake for, so that isn't really doing much for me. The catalog is a grind and, well, every game seems to be a grind fest nowadays so I can't say it's an issue, but I sure don't feel like dropping 50+ hours just to get mostly locker decorations I won't use, gear that will get hanged in a closet, and emotes that'll collect dust. The content isn't the problem, it's the frequency of when we get said major content that's hurting this game a bit and like some of the other issues I've mentioned, other people have brought this up as well. To close, the true potential of this game is not being met; it could be met if they find a way to bring a mid-season content update that's just a smaller scale version of the new season one that adds just a few things to warrant a return. 2/3 months where you play the season is better than 1. The maps obviously need changes because it isn't fun to play when most of the maps feel nearly identical to each other. A better matchmaking system that evens out the playing field for everyone would be nice to make it fun for all of those involved in the battle. Finally, maybe make it where challenge battle is always available and the challenge itself simply rotates with the stage rotation. If you still don't see any of these issues, that's fine. I personally feel the game could be better, that's all.
finally, someone talking about splatoon that doesnt have to do with the inner workings of splatoon (update reviews, lore rundowns etc) just because something is colorful and happy doesnt make it a child game nice video, would reccomend. i would say a weezer pinkterton album out of a blue
Great demonstration, and explanation why Splatoon is unique and differs from other shooter games, while containing vibrate and entertaining aesthetic for everyone to enjoy.
I used to play on a competitive team and man the game has so much depth to it, the weapon classes and designs are so well made, and everything is so unique.
It's funny cause I have ~100 hours in this game last time I checked, and because I think anarchy is just slightly worse tf2, I don't play it. So, I'm still at C-
Tbh the thing that makes this game for me is the music. It's just phenomenal and not only does it fit the caotic energy of a mach but also the actual world you're playing in, and don't even get me started on now or never!
I used to really hate shooters because of games like call of duty and whatever else, and one time I wanted to try one out and since I only had a switch I decided to try out Splatoon 2. Ended up being my favourite game on the system, I bought a couple video games that use shooters (Doom and metroid and that) because of Splatoon, and I don't think I'll ever play another shooter because of motion controls, but I don't care! I love Splatoon :)
You uploaded this video just a few days after I decided to switch to splatoon as my main game after years playing overwatch in grandmaster. It is a big switch but having a unique game with a community that cares about the game. Thanks for detailing this. Side note: you didn’t even talk about the amazing mode Salmon run, which a lot of people enjoy more than the main mode!
This video brings up so many good points without even mentioning the side modes! The singleplayer campaign and the salmon run modes are both super fun, especially salmon run.
It's a damn shame that not many people give it a chance just because of how unique the shooting is. You'd never even think that range could be an impactful stat in a shooter if you just played the mainstream stuff, but it's a huge part of how weapons fit roles in Splatoon, Also, the firing spread and your shots falling at the end of their trajectory are both such unique things that can be applied to actual gameplay.
As a person who's played Splatoon for a very long time now. It is by far my favorite third person shooter of all time and it's nice to see more people getting into the game (Titanfall 2 is my fave first person shooter)
Competitive Splatoon player here! I have my own team and I am Tournament Organizer for a low level tournament :)) Here’s some interesting information about competitive Splatoon: - this is movement based shooter, and in competitive you have a team of 4+ people. It is very difficult to be very good at this game, the game has so much depth to it! Coms are insanely important in comp. Because everything happens so fast, having good awareness, callouts, movement and aim, strategy, and teamwork are all super important in order to be a good competitive player. - the competitive scene is very small compared to other games, but we did have a recent boost a couple of months into splatoon 3 and the scene is always growing. I help a buddy of mine run the lowest level skill capped tournament ever called jr’s draft to get more casuals trying competitive, and we’ve actually seen it make a difference! - Japan’s comp scene is huge. Its probably bigger than the rest of the world combined if you ask me. - I think the average age of a comp player right now is 17-21. Our current roster on my own team are all adults, and we’ve even had some 30 year olds be on the team before. But most of us are in our 20s. - There are a lot of women and LGBTQ+ people playing comp for this game. I am also in these categories. Idk man maybe the bright colors draw us in or something pfft idk. - The scene mostly lives on discord and twitter. Every tournament will have their own discord server and pretty much every team does too. - There are many skill capped tournaments. In western splatoon comp we have a system of sorts that use divisions to divide skill levels. Divisions in this season (they change like once per year) are 11-X. So div 11 is lowest, low level is considered divs 11-5, then mid level divs 4-2, with high level being div 1 and div X. My tournament is run for div 11-7 since low level is huge. I definitely believe this makes it easier for teams to start and climb in the scene. I put this in really simple terms, hosting a skill capped tournament is a lot more complicated than this. Let me know if you want to know more about splatoon comp!
It makes me sad that Splatoon's reputation is so lackluster here. if you look over in japan, splatoon is HUGE there. It can't be understated how big it is...for example: SplatoonNA's tweet when they announced its big story DLC: 15k likes SplatoonJP announcing it: 144K LIKES. That's not a fluke, it's like this for practically every tweet. It's kinda absurd. JP's Tweet talking about Eggstra Work having more gear in it i guess: 100k likes. JP's Tweet that just showed a picture (not even gameplay) of a new special-111k likes. Overseas can barely scrape 20k on most posts. I'm sure part of the difference is just that, Japan has different preferences in gaming. But I do think overseas could be doing a LOT better with its advertising. There's no reason that, after so many years, the wider gaming community still thinks that the game is _just_ turf war, even though that's only one gamemode out of 5. (6 if you include salmon run). There's clearly a lot of room for it to grow in popularity, so hopefully it gets its day in the spotlight sometime
I know it isn't often in the limelight, but the music is GOLDEN for this game. Music from the first game is sampled and pulled from to add to even the third game. The icing on the cake that makes the splatoon universe feel like it actually exists is the progression of time felt through the music, like different bands and singers and styles and feels. heel, a splatoon 1 band, Squid Squad, broke up for splatoon 2, only to come back as Front Roe in splat 3 with a missing member. and lets not forget how the music fits whatever mode you play, from goofy or exciting music for the story mode, to frantic and panicking for salmon run (he forgot about the PvE mode, salmon run guys...) to a fighting invigorating music for multiplayer. and the constant events like splatfests include it's very own batch of music which feels like it's very own festival and genera different from the og game. (also didnt talk about in-game news people, deep cut/idols...) I used to be a weirdo that didnt like much music other than pop, but once i found splatoon, it gave me this unstoppable love for progressive, jumpy, and punk/ska feel. it helped me learn to love music and what it can do for emotions. yes, most of it is progressive rock/ska, but has many different generas that lets anyone have fun. and dont even get me started with how intricate these composers are. some reviewers like christoph jakob, a game composer himself, goes into the very interesting and unique way that splatoon music is made, from the chord progressions, interesting design choses, and subtle motifs, to complex things like omega-3's (a salmon run band) very dissonant time signatures from 31/16 to one of the songs being a mix of 12 something different time signatures. This is my favorite game, because it can bring it all to the table. (a 100$ soundtrack being sold for 60$, that also comes with a free game and loving community)
I wish it was on pc, playing with a controller and with the horrible internet of the switch + the servers combined is super annoying, without mentioning the nintendo switch online I'll always adore the splatoon franchise but paying for servers that are that bad is just not it, I finished every story mode and dlc thought
This is a really well made video! I’m glad to see there are people shining some light on this hidden gem of a game, everything you talked about was extremely accurate and hopefully it persuades others to give it a go :D
ok so striking mod footage is actually something that's in their tos, like, the nintendo user agreement which like, you *did* agree to. you can't showcase "content not actually contained within the software" partially to keep kids from buying into schoolbus rumors about "omg its actually real" like back during the early pokemon days
Ahem ahem reasons why splatoon is for everybody: 1. In Octo Expansion, Agent 8 and Cap. Cuttlefish nearly got brutally torn to pieces by rogue telephone's ginormous blender 2. Sanitized Octarians and Octolings are stuck like that forever, same goes for the hairy 3. In return of the mammalians, half the population on earth got destroyed by "The Hairmageddon"
I still feel wonder why NOA made the marketing choice to appeal only to kids, considering where I’m from (Japan) pretty much everyone who has a switch plays this game. (Even my super corporate boomer bosses at work)
I have thousands of hours in Splatoon 1, playing alone and with my brothers some times. After a couple of years being in love with the game at a young age of about 9 I stopped playing. If they decided to make a Splatoon 4 and make make it available to pc, I would be playing it all day every day again, but knowing Nintendo, they wont.
I got Splatoon 3 and I have to say it was a blast to play on! I really love the missions! People really have to give this a try. I wouldn't play this around some people though because when I finish a mission, the Inkling/Octoling sometimes does some questionable poses. Edit (3/18/24): it's been 8 months. Did my opinion change? A little bit. Got a little bit burnt out of Splatoon but it's still a solid game. However, the community is not something I want you to interact with.
I'm the complete opposite of the target audience for this video (never really liked shooters, but love Splatoon specifically) and I clicked the video half expecting a ton of criticisms to the game, but I was surprised. The criticisms that you present are valid for the most part, but so are the pros. I started playing Splatoon all the way back on the first game because its aesthetics pulled me in, and kept playing because it was just so INTERESTING. Over 500 hours in the first game alone, definitely close to 1.4k hours overall... I definitely recommend it for anyone even slightly intrigued by the games.
Splatoon is peak competitive gaming. Fight me on it. It has simple enough mechanics that it's easy to learn It has a good enough variety of weapons you can use And it has extremely unique mechanics that's still not too different from other shooters
6:36 I've played apex a lot but now im finally free and the movement i find out is overwhelming even for a senior. Constant blur was dizzy(disabled btw). and 8 months ago I discovered an impressive fresh air for doom players called Ultrakill. THE GAME IS FUN AF and the best part the whole game let you discover everything at your own pace, like learning what you can parry. Splatoon since 2015 was a whole new experience for the weapon variety, easy aim and fast learning, besides for the rule "pick a gun and try to use a braincell". The strats for each weapon still reminds me of csgo. I dont wanna compare ultrakill because its an indie game and only for pc but at least all your sessions on both games will never be the same, neither gonna end similar its always a *fresh* experience and you are always learning new stuff, combos, strats, moveset. And as a joke. Human kind is dead. Ink is fuel. Inkopolis is full. *Splatoon and Ultrakill are truly gemstones for movement shooters* Edit: and I'm more than happy to see people enter both games no matter wha- *Hardcore Furrys, peds, lgtb fascists hide in the game. *Literally Smash an assassin vampire Nikon.
The best part of this video is the fact that splatoon 1 story mode boss level are incredibly creepysince if you don't initiate the boss fight, there are sounds that most players who have played the game view as humans screaming. No joke
Another Major reason why splatoon will never be popular is because the comp scene is not funded by Nintendo, which is exactly what it needs. It has the fanbase, and players, but its just not funded. Other popular shooter games are worlds better in that aspect, which is why there's so much hype around those games.
i love this widely held notion that adults are incapable of having a little fun. like, just because a game is a bright, lighthearted explosion of color and style, lightning in a bottle gameplay experience, a lot of people immediately think "that must be for children, i can't play that". GIRL WHAT?? have a little fun for once 😆😆 also, this didn't come up in the video but splatoon 3 has something no other online shootygame has, and that's NO FUCKING VOICE CHAT!!! if i wanted to get degraded and verbally harassed by strangers while i'm gaming, i would just play literally any other online shootygame! OMG!!! YOU SAID IT!!! i have long been a champion of gyro controls because they grant a mouse-like precision to aiming at literally no cost to gamepad real estate, but i have never heard someone _else_ mention my exact idea about gyro controls for aiming. great video!!

People have to learn to see past kid-friendly design choices and just enjoy games for what they are, and Splatoon is a prime example of this

NO MAINSTREAM MICROTRANSACTIONS! There is a paid Dlc that will have a fully unique storymode and unlike overwatch 2 there is actual faith that they can fully finish it. There are amiibo for some cosmetics, but at least you get a physical figurine (that can used for other games) for your purchase!
Just for this fact alone, makes Splatoon above everything else in the market.
With how blizzard is these days, it was only a matter of time before overwatch’s PvE would be cancelled. The splatoon dev team proved that they can both develop a massive paid DLC and give regular updates at the same time, I have hope the side order will help splatoon grow bigger than it has been.
its almost like overwatch 2 is a free-to-play game that has a horrible ceo behind it 🤯
+story and lore is actually good
Nintendo is actually pretty good about not doing this because they still have the philosophy of finishing a game before releasing it.

@@Maurizio7766why?
So misinformation
Second is the fear of having to try something new while also having to give up aim assist.
Gyro hurts my wrists if I use it too much, so I had to shut it off ASAP and use Rollers instead
@@F1areon that's the reason camera resets relative to your left stick inclination and the stick can still be used horizontally.

I love the points about Nintendo. People always say Nintendo sucks because their system isn’t as good or they don’t make good decisions or whatever. But I can’t stress this enough: GAMING IS ABOUT THE GAMES. And Nintendo absolutely delivers in that category
The console being bad also makes it more affordable too
@@fragmentedrose7401 IDK if I'd say bad, but yes, their consoles using older less expensive technology than their competitors means they can both sell their consoles for a lower price, AND use the money earned from console sales to reinvest into making quality games. If you only think about that, then take a submarine and go to 4800 MTS under the sea and if something goes wrong, be happy because it is part of the experience. You have to be aware and know and act when someone does things wrong, and Nintendo is known for doing them very badly. For people like you to charge $70 for poorly made games with micropayments

i personally believe splatoon never becoming main stream is both its greatest strength and weakness.
it allows the community to be more home grown and have a more family vibe to it instead of just being a corporate thing used for money. but thats just me personally lol

If the it becomes a little more popular we could get a lot more irl accessories, the my nintendo items arent enough...
I personally believe this is due to a) nintendo being jp based b) Japan is a tiny ass island where all the best players have easy internet connection to eachother (whereas the west could have to play from the west coast of na to Europe)
There’s likely more reasons but in essence splatoon is way more popular in jp than the west
Edit: also unless I’m wrong but isn’t Japan responsible for like 90% of splatoon 3 sales?
I think one key feature is the fact that Japan is more open to "weird" artstyle, while the west fucking despise colorful, cartoony artstyle.

The lore, fan service and stuffs like that show that they actually understand the fans
Most of the fanbase are young adults around the ages of 18-25
"you go from the typical shooter to a *fucking umbrella* "
man, this was a super fun review. i sometimes forget that at its core, splatoon is ABSOLUTELY a shooter, which sometimes gets lost in the *sea* of lore and a sense of world in the game. idols, brands, story mode... there's so much to this game, and so much thought in every nook and cranny. hell, THE IN GAME MUSIC BANDS HAVE LORE !!!
this was a really nice view and introduction for people who lean more towards the "traditional" style of shooter games. underneath that kid-friendly, colourful shell is a super competitive and intricate game with a little bit of something for literally EVERYONE - as advertised.
Me watching this on my phone as he shows the fps comparison: ah yes, graphics
I feel what make a lot of people not like the game is the controls cause most people gave it one game and then just switch to sticks
Also it so fun to see people who play normal shooters react to how competitive and fast paced a game of splatoon is
Let's hope more people see this cuz bro's speakin' facts
Man, Splatoon is so underrated in the West, it’s like revolutionary in Japan.
Like a year after splatoon 2 came out, I stopped playing it. I recently decided to try splatoon 3, and i'm kinda hooked to it again
and once you get into the game the music will be such a banger that you cant stop listening to it(speaking from experience)
finally, someone talking about splatoon that doesnt have to do with the inner workings of splatoon (update reviews, lore rundowns etc)
just because something is colorful and happy doesnt make it a child game
nice video, would reccomend. i would say a weezer pinkterton album out of a blue
Great demonstration, and explanation why Splatoon is unique and differs from other shooter games, while containing vibrate and entertaining aesthetic for everyone to enjoy.
the biggest problem is honestly the big price tag for the game and being controller only while every other one can be played with a keyboard on a pc
I used to play on a competitive team and man the game has so much depth to it, the weapon classes and designs are so well made, and everything is so unique.
I LOVE the weapon designs! The whole "household objects as weapons" thing is just so cool to me.
@@EngineerMonkeyBTD6 then we have hero shot from 2, which is just a straight up p90
@@GeebzGBZ OH YEAH!
I wonder how many people hate the game because it’s unique to the point where their skill in other games doesn’t transfer and they got stuck in c rank
Lol this is probably true honestly, though I'd wager the majority of people hating have never even turned it on.
It's funny cause I have ~100 hours in this game last time I checked, and because I think anarchy is just slightly worse tf2, I don't play it. So, I'm still at C-
Literally the funnest game I’ve ever played tbh. Each match is only 3-5 minutes but it’s sooooo intense. It’s just awesome
The main problem for me is the online fee
It is literally the only reason I don't play the game even though I have it
Find some friends and share a family plan. But even the single plan is just $/€20 per year, so 1.67 per month. That's really not that much.
I have over 6000h on the whole franchise
And to this day
I am not bored
It's a damn shame that not many people give it a chance just because of how unique the shooting is. You'd never even think that range could be an impactful stat in a shooter if you just played the mainstream stuff, but it's a huge part of how weapons fit roles in Splatoon, Also, the firing spread and your shots falling at the end of their trajectory are both such unique things that can be applied to actual gameplay.
I literally just bought 3 today and I already feel discouraged;////
@@raidexeyou will get better quick, play through the story mode first with motion controls.

As a person who's played Splatoon for a very long time now. It is by far my favorite third person shooter of all time and it's nice to see more people getting into the game (Titanfall 2 is my fave first person shooter)
Competitive Splatoon player here! I have my own team and I am Tournament Organizer for a low level tournament :))
Here’s some interesting information about competitive Splatoon:
- this is movement based shooter, and in competitive you have a team of 4+ people.
I used to play comp, was very chill :)
It makes me sad that Splatoon's reputation is so lackluster here. if you look over in japan, splatoon is HUGE there. It can't be understated how big it is...for example:
SplatoonNA's tweet when they announced its big story DLC: 15k likes
SplatoonJP announcing it: 144K LIKES.
I wish it was on pc, playing with a controller and with the horrible internet of the switch + the servers combined is super annoying, without mentioning the nintendo switch online
I'll always adore the splatoon franchise but paying for servers that are that bad is just not it, I finished every story mode and dlc thought
Splatoon is actually a post-apocalypic secret agent war game
This is a really well made video! I’m glad to see there are people shining some light on this hidden gem of a game, everything you talked about was extremely accurate and hopefully it persuades others to give it a go :D
ok so striking mod footage is actually something that's in their tos, like, the nintendo user agreement which like, you *did* agree to. you can't showcase "content not actually contained within the software" partially to keep kids from buying into schoolbus rumors about "omg its actually real" like back during the early pokemon days
“It’s seen as a kids’ game”
The fifty different kids playing CoD right now:
Exactly the reason why I have lost faith in this generation
Ahem ahem
reasons why splatoon is for everybody:
1. In Octo Expansion, Agent 8 and Cap. Cuttlefish nearly got brutally torn to pieces by rogue telephone's ginormous blender
2. Sanitized Octarians and Octolings are stuck like that forever, same goes for the hairy
3. In return of the mammalians, half the population on earth got destroyed by "The Hairmageddon"
I still feel wonder why NOA made the marketing choice to appeal only to kids, considering where I’m from (Japan) pretty much everyone who has a switch plays this game. (Even my super corporate boomer bosses at work)
NOA was originally gonna market it exclusively to young girls. Their advertising choices are.... questionable
I love how people see the splatoon series as a kids' game when the lore can get very deep and sometimes dark.
Dont even get me started on octo expansion
What's funny is that Splatoon has some seriously MESSED UP lore when you really dog into it.
Most people I've asked think that Splatoon has always ran at 30 fps. And are shocked when I tell them about it running at 60.
As someone who plays Splatoon, (I mean, just look at my PfP) I can agree with everything said in this video.
You understated how much different the splatoon weapons are from tradition guns from fps games, they shoot drastically different.
I don't understand how you keep completely reinventing your content style while nailing it on your first try this is on par with a modern dunkey video
ive watched a fuck ton of youtube in my lifetime, i would be a variety channel if the algorithm made it easy
*Frye eyebrow raise*

It has simple enough mechanics that it's easy to learn
It has a good enough variety of weapons you can use
And it has extremely unique mechanics that's still not too different from other shooters

*Splatoon and Ultrakill are truly gemstones for movement shooters*

new fragzz video dropped wake up babe.
The best part of this video is the fact that splatoon 1 story mode boss level are incredibly creepysince if you don't initiate the boss fight, there are sounds that most players who have played the game view as humans screaming. No joke
Splatoon 3 is amazing! I have the Splatoon 3 Switch OLED, and I've spent hours playing it. Thank you for bringing attention to this gem of a game!
Another Major reason why splatoon will never be popular is because the comp scene is not funded by Nintendo, which is exactly what it needs. It has the fanbase, and players, but its just not funded. Other popular shooter games are worlds better in that aspect, which is why there's so much hype around those games.
Its by far my biggest issue with jt, I LOVE playing this game competitively but its hard to enjoy when Nintendo is actively killing their comp scene
i love this widely held notion that adults are incapable of having a little fun. like, just because a game is a bright, lighthearted explosion of color and style, lightning in a bottle gameplay experience, a lot of people immediately think "that must be for children, i can't play that". GIRL WHAT?? have a little fun for once 😆😆
also, this didn't come up in the video but splatoon 3 has something no other online shootygame has, and that's NO FUCKING VOICE CHAT!!! if i wanted to get degraded and verbally harassed by strangers while i'm gaming, i would just play literally any other online shootygame!
OMG!!! YOU SAID IT!!! i have long been a champion of gyro controls because they grant a mouse-like precision to aiming at literally no cost to gamepad real estate, but i have never heard someone _else_ mention my exact idea about gyro controls for aiming.
great video!!
"It's impossible to go back" yeup, I can't play with stick controls anymore lol I now have to play Fortnite Switch with motion controls
honestly the only thing that has me hooked on splatoon is the dress up aspect. i love dressing up my squid and sometimes i have to kill to do that
