This is exactly what I have been looking for...... I wish you could share how you did the alteration for the pull outs and the overall build.....amazing job!
That's the best DIY pochade I've seen! What a brilliant design - just wish I had the skills to made one myself. Mine is like the Frankenstein's monster of pochade boxes compared to this.
I’m new to your channel and have many classes on using old cigar boxes at my church ,non the less . But am enthusiastic about this one . Love it thank you for sharing this with me just real nice thanks again. God bless you and yours. Real nice .
very well done! I love making something out of something. Very smart set up! I am getting into water colour and if I ever find a cigar box I will try and give this ago. Thank you
+Jigger2361 Well the aroma was nice, I gave it 3 coats of Danish oil and now the lovely aroma has gone, oh well never mind, at least I'm getting good use out of it, that's the important thing, I wish you all the best with yours, I would love to see a picture of it when its all done:)
Love it too, got my ear balls open for a cigar box, who would have thought good ones were impossible to find. Looking forward to building my own. Cheers mate!
The artistic mind rests not on its laurels, Smoothie! Ingenious and beautiful to be sure! Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year from the "Snow(less) Birds" in Canada!
+Angelica G Snowless in Canada, what's going on? we are having a very mild winter here in the UK too, thanks for your lovely comment Angelica, Happy Christmas and a very happy new year to you too :)
Thanks Bryan, kind of you to say, coincidently I have been using the box this evening on my lap to paint a small watercolour, Thanks for commenting, much appreciated.
Have you ever thought of making some to sale because if you do I'm buying one.. I tried to make one of the other day and it was an absolute Shear disaster, end up cutting my hand and made a blood mess.. LoL.. My daughter has forbade me from ever coming near any tools that have edges they are too dangerous in my hands, apparently I'm a complete klutz... LoL 😀😂😂.. Deedee
John this is wonderful. I have some draw oilers for my pencils and am contemplating making the surround, not in my skill sector but I’ll model through.
. . .ah man, you saved me losin atleast two ton to those blood sucking art shops, I got a cigar box and a brother who works wood, You are Ace, subscribed, thumbed dupped and Thank You.
This is beautiful. I’m trying to see how the side trays stay in when pulled out. At first, I thought the inner edges would be a tiny bit taller so they would catch on the top of the slots, but from the photos, they seem to be the same height.
4/24/2021 USA Grandpa Bill: Smoothie77, yours is the finest DIY box I've seen on TH-cam. I've been looking for several days at every box and easel that comes up on the lists. Chuckle, my vision is almost swimming from all of them. Your care in making it comes through and if I had made it I would be right proud...in a humble sort of way. I'm guessing that you got the extra Mahogany for the drawers and board from other cigar boxes? Thank you for sharing it.
Love it you are so inventive and creative, I can't quite envisage me going plain air but you never know I might take to the hills with my mobility scooter and watercolours that would be a sight for sore eyes. Having done the collaboration waterfall perhaps I could go for Niagara in watercolour ! That would be amazing, do you know how to paint rainbows because there is usually one at Niagara and you are actually looking down it from the American side of the falls, breathtaking
Never painted a rainbow before, but if i do you will be the first to know, then you can go on your plein air painting adventure to Niagara, pochade box in hand, and paint a masterpiece :)
smoothie77 ha ha, I will only be doing it in my head these days, can you imagine the feat of coordination involved especially when I can't accomplish a masterpiece in my dining room lol
Hi Margaret, we have a guy in our painting group who's built an incredible setup for his mobility scooter so don't be put off,. It makes a wonderful platform for getting out and enjoying some painting in the fresh air.
Very nice! Did you completely remove or replace the bottom wood when cutting out drawer slots? Have you made plans for this project? Would love to have them!
Thank you Lineke, that's very kind of you to say, it means a lot to me coming from an artist as brilliant as you, you have always been a massive inspiration to me too, I love your style and techniques, thanks for taking the time to view and comment, much appreciated !
Nice job, but you've put the tripod T nut in upside down! The large end with the hooks goes inside the box, not outside. The reason is that the tripod clamp will, and does, pull out the T Nut if you mount as you have it.
This evening, on my nightly stroll, inspired by this video, I walked into a wine and cigar shop in town and said, Hey, I’m in need of a cigar box for an art project. Do you have any? He handed me two - one basic one and another with thicker stained wood and rounded corners. No charge! I’ve seen other places that might charge like $5.
i have no idea how i would cut everything out and out this together i have a lot of cigar boxes, it does inside me but i've no idea how u actually did it all ... maybe need some power tool lessons lol
They are called: Southco E6 Adjustable Torque Hinge. They are great for this application because they omit the need for external adjustable brass hardware often found on pochade boxes. The hinge is stiff.
This is the best DIY cigar paint box I've seen so far.
Inspired me to make one instead of paying over £100 for one.
This is adorable. Perfect for gouache/WC/minis...
This is exactly what I have been looking for...... I wish you could share how you did the alteration for the pull outs and the overall build.....amazing job!
I don’t understand why people would dislike this video. It’s AMAZING.
It's a fantastic box.
Oh my goodness!!!!!! What a fabulous job.
Thank you, very kind of you to say.
That's the best DIY pochade I've seen! What a brilliant design - just wish I had the skills to made one myself. Mine is like the Frankenstein's monster of pochade boxes compared to this.
This is amazing conversion. Side drawers are nice touch!
So far you've done the best watercolor ponchade box I've seen. Thanks for the idea's. Hugz, Tree
This is by far the best cigar box pochade I've seen! Beautiful work. Brilliant.
That is totally awesome. It's much better than the one I made from my husband's wooden gun cleaning tool box. Lol Thanks for sharing. 👍😊
Very impressive box, thank you for sharing.
So neat and well made. I'm looking at making one myself and this has inspired me to go ahead. Thanks.
Brilliant!❤🤩🤗
Lovely. Very well thought and clever. Congrats !

Real nice .
It's absolutely gorgeous!!! Unfortunately I have a pile of old cigar boxes but no woodworking skills.
very well done! I love making something out of something. Very smart set up! I am getting into water colour and if I ever find a cigar box I will try and give this ago. Thank you
Superb. Had a similar idea that you have further inspired and added ideas into the mix! Thank you.
Excellent adaptation. Careful work. You have every reason to be proud of this. Made me subscribe to your channel.
Very impressive.
So much nicer than mine. I am jealous.
Fantastic 👍👍
I love the design, whether it’s a cigar box or a new pochade box.

Thank you Dolores!
That's a very neat setup.
An amazing concept and it really turned out well!
Thanks, Ben.
You did a great job. I wish I was handy at woodwork like that, I just paid for someone to make a basic one
That is really impressive. Nice work.
This came out beautifully!
So good!!!
aha! the pochade box comes full circle! awesome, smoothie! the aroma must be soothing too i bet, eh! great vid, i am trying this!
What a brilliant idea Smoothie and superbly made, may try this myself thank you!
+david thornber Thanks David, I appreciate the comment.
Amazing!
Love it too, got my ear balls open for a cigar box, who would have thought good ones were impossible to find. Looking forward to building my own.
Cheers mate!
Very nice little box, lovely wood. Ingenious idea, well made as well, well done Smoothie:-)
+Madi Thomson Thanks Madi, hopefully I will do some nice paintings with it:)
I wish u would have showed how you cut the sides and drilled in the tripod mount!
Exactly.
Really nice job. Protip for you. Rub a candle along all the sides of the draws and the edges of the top tray. It will make them run nice and smooth.
+Bartholo Clumpdink Thanks for the tip, I will try that.
Look so cool
Beautiful!

Could you give more info on the tripod mount? Thanks!
Excellent idea!! Should be a new trend hahaha ;)
Haha, maybe! Thanks for the comment Lineke, its nice to hear from you again :)
Well, I thought it was time to check you again and also check out some of your elder video's. You always amaze and inspire me Smoothie! ^.^
Thank you Lineke, that's very kind of you to say, it means a lot to me coming from an artist as brilliant as you, you have always been a massive inspiration to me too, I love your style and techniques, thanks for taking the time to view and comment, much appreciated !
Love it, what size is that cigar box please?
Thanks, the size is....30x22x6cm
very kind of you to get back to me, thank you x
You're welcome:)
Where did you get the tension hinges?
Nice job, but you've put the tripod T nut in upside down! The large end with the hooks goes inside the box, not outside. The reason is that the tripod clamp will, and does, pull out the T Nut if you mount as you have it.
soothing voice
Mate that is beautiful! where did you find the tension hinges? I can't seem to locate any
Amazon has them - they are called torsion or torque hinges- Southco is one of company that makes them. Size is 1.69 inches I think.
@@barbaraberry63 thank you so much!!!
Beautiful, Was this a one time make or are you making these for sale?.. I am sure you would have people interested.
Thanks, it was just a one time thing.
Where exactly can I get that empty box? Any link!

It’s a great designs for someone who’s a carpenter. For a hack like me who doesn’t have a workshop, it really doesn’t help me.
Plastic hinges?....I used zinc alloy, it breaks every time I adjusting it! I think plastic is more sturdy than zinc alloy
who is here to make this for keeping ur art materials 😂😂😂
i have no idea how i would cut everything out and out this together i have a lot of cigar boxes, it does inside me but i've no idea how u actually did it all ... maybe need some power tool lessons lol
Where did you get those hinges. What brand are they??
unbranded, from ebay.
They are called: Southco E6 Adjustable Torque Hinge. They are great for this application because they omit the need for external adjustable brass hardware often found on pochade boxes. The hinge is stiff.
can you sell me one???
love it but too much work!!!
I bet it smells like cigars.....!! Good idea but....No thank you.
