I've been looking for the video documentaries by Wayne Abbot about the Athabaskan - Unlucky Lady and The Mysterious Sinking of the Athabaskan. Any chance you will be uploading them to youtube or can you tell me how to find them please?
Good question. The documentary does hint at an answer but chose not to elaborate. The raiders likely would've set charges in the build & near by building to obliterate everything. Therefore it would have been either very difficult & impractical or even impossible to notice the Enigma was gone. Even if the unlikely event they did notice, it'd take weeks & by than the British would have gained enough knowledge to adapt to any changes to the machine.
I have one nagging doubt about the rational for the raid. If the mission was to snatch an enigma machine from German Naval HQ, how could they accomplish this without the Germans becoming aware that one of their enigma machines had been stolen? So even if the raid was successful, the Germans would have immediately changed their existing Enigma machines, making the one the Allies spent so much blood in capturing, obsolete in a matter of days or weeks.
