- Three days solo bikepacking the King Alfred’s Way in the U.K. Started and ended in Reading. All told I road 384km over the three days,
and climbed about 4500 metres. Bike was a Canyon Inflite AL CX, with 40mm tyres. It’s a superb route. Thank you Cycling U.K.!!
Trip done August 2021.
I am 1492nd person watching this video and 56th living thumb up. Thank you Michel for sharing your trip. It is great reminder of my experience on KAW.
I'm doing my first backpacking ride this year.
Solo & riding the full route.
Going from riding about 30 miles a week to 220 in 4 to 5 days.
It's going wreck my body but hey it's going be fun.
Enjoy!!! That will be awesome.
Stunning shots of the landscape Michael. I'm heading to KAW at the end of June. Looking at your video I wish I was already on my way. Where did you get your craft beer and pepperoni pizza?
Hi. Glad you liked it. The craft beer was somewhere in Surrey. Right on the trail. Was a little sign off the track. Wasnt a pub. It was a small farm yard micro-brewery. The pepperoni was bought at Domino's Pizza in Amesbury, before heading onto Salisbury Plain.
That was a great ride and achievement Michael but there was no footage of the Ridgeway, my local area.Boo :) I'm hoping to have a go at the KAW next week if the weather will play ball
Everything from 13:10 to 14:40 is the Ridgeway...you can even see the sign saying....Ridgeway. Hope the weather plays ball.
@@MrBrackley88 Ah yes, I meant to say there was not much footage....but you missed some key features close to where I live, The Uffington White horse and Waylands smithy, but yes I did recognise the sign by the Green path nr Avebury, Liddington and the A34 underpass.
I'm setting off in a few days, it looks like the weather will be mainly dry
@@WiltshireMan Aha....the thing is, I didnt have time to stop and film as was running a bit late. I also know those places very well. I did pause for 2 mins at Waylands Smithy...and got some very odd looks from a family..I think I looked like a wild man by then...having killed myself that day so far. Enjoy the ride. May the wind be always at your back
@@MrBrackley88 I'm back now Michael having successfully completed the ride. I've also received odd looks from folk at Waylands Smithy...There a funny lot up there.
Just editing may video which will be in two parts. Should be uploaded soon.
Sandy
PS I also found the route a killer:) And so did my bike!
Great video however the music always spoils the natural sound….keep it up though
You havent heard me huffing and puffing....
Great video Michael. I did some of the KAW last year. Planning to do more this year. Have not wild camped before. How did you find wild camping ?
Glad you liked it! I am a big fan of wild camping. I chose to do this on a weekend with good weather. No wild camping without a tent if rain is forecast. Life is too short. I actually prefer a bivi bag to a tent....but would use a tent if worst weather or winter. It is light, simple, and nice to be able to open your eyes and see the sky! But I did wake with a slug on my head.....
How far from Reading train station is the route? were there lots of places along the route to fill up on waters/food (go through any towns?) and where did you get the route from?
Get the book from Cycling UK and explains all including maps and GPX route. It is next to the station that you join the route . I am contemplating this next year with a friend or two and being I live and ride locally in Berkshire and ride the Ridgeway regularly, it does look a great route. Meeting riders doing it this year has prompted me in my research this winter and now the book has arrived , I just need to get on the bike when the weather warms.
Sorry for the late response. Hope it is still relevant. Justin below says where I got the route. Reading station is VERY near the route. I didnt carry much food, as I could buy along the way in pubs, petrol stations and shops. The longest part without a shop was probably the Avebury to Goring. there were very few shops. I ate and stocked up in Avebury.
