- I had a lot of fun painting this episode of Monster Biology! I hope you are all learning something new - synesthesia is something I've known for a long time and was excited to finally talk about it in a video. Also, Epic Grumpyre #2 is my favorite.

@@barrelotl5748 BBB implied there was no food chain by mentioning that almost all the food they eat comes from the bakery, and they’re able to “absorb nutrition” from supposed junk food.

Really have to say that I love the idea of this series!
Also just as an idea/recommendation, when Supernaturals are covered, I think the anatomy of them should be more artificial in some way? Wubbox and some Wublins like Tympa are obvious, but more organic-looking monsters like Maulch or Fleechwurm probably should be handled less like natural occurring organisms, and more like automatons and things like that, since all of them were created by another monster, rather than naturally occurring.

supporting the predator idea (and proving a prey point wrong) is the fact it looks angry in the song. Its possible it derived joy from the song, or tricked other monsters into trusting it and the output for joy is an angry face. it disproves the prey point by showing a different emotion had the outcome. its possible that the calm face it has the rest of the time is it actually being malicious, as stated in the predator segment. I think that it is indeed, a predator.
Wow these videos are actually really amazing. At the beginning i couldn’t ever understand how the grumpier would be prey, but the scientific explanation in the video really justifies it!

I love these series. I even started thinking about biology in my monster class. It probably won't happen, but it would be interesting to see something about titans, especially Necrull.
Hear me out. In my 2,5 braincells there are only two options.
1) Necrull is dead and it is real skull, so there's no reason for holes in it to exist (unless I don't know something), and they are very big, because islands are much bigger than in the game, so that probably means that there was something that big, that made these holes, and it is scary.
2) it can be sort of exoskeleton and holes are for breathing or something like that. That means that Necrull needed to protect itself from something, so there probably are really big things that hunt titans.

Oh sorry, I thought you were making a mistake and saying that you were thinking about monsters in your biology class. I actually do know what a monster class is, but your comment makes it seem like you weren’t talking about that. I could’ve used context clues to reason that you were talking about monster classes and not making a mistake.

In my opinion, I think epic grumpyre will most likely not be a more extreme version of grumpyre, as I think bbb has mostly moved on from “we’ll change the saturation then add horns and another set of arms” and generally has more creative rares and epics now, take epic gobbleygourd for instance, I would’ve never expected a peacock design. It will probably be a different kind of bat or based off of the fire haven critters, and I really like that bbb is steering away from these, in my opinion, lazy designs(cough cough rare stogg cough rare glowl cough cough).

When I saw the Grumpyre’s “darkness cloud” and you started going on about ink sac, I thought it could simply make the cloud more dense(or at least make itself harder to see through the gaseous ink) to blend in with the darkness to either escape or ambush
Your evidence for making it prey would actually make it a secondary predator. Vampire bats, which, as you said, Grumpyre is based on, drinks the blood from other animals, but it is still a prey.
It's super interesting to go into the anatomy of monsters, it gives us a better idea of how they work and even get more ideas for fanmade rares :O Amazing work as always creeptanium!!!

There are not a lot of holes in each wing, so it can still fly, but not very high. It is only able to hover a bit off of the ground as show in game.

This is quite interesting and I like your theories. I think it's more interesting about epic grumpyre and how it's bio says the grumpyre is sensitive to bright lights and has super fast regeneration. It would be cool if you went back to previous monsters and theorized based of new forms that didn't exist at the time.
Remember when grumpyre said in grumpius “it’s grumpin’ time” and he grumped everywhere?

Vampire bats don't really kill the creatures that they drink blood from, so only the other monsters want to kill grumpire (probably not knowing it's just part of its diet)
Theory:
The common grumpyre is the prey version while the rare counterpart is the predator

It seemed like you think that they have to be either predator or prey, but really it seems like it’s just in between, using all these traits of confusion to get closer to its prey, or further from its predator
Okay, so epic grumpyre got released for Summersong, so here's my biology of it.
As stated in the bio, the epic grumpyre doesn't have the same type of skin as it's common and rare counterparts. From this, I'm getting that the common and are variant have a type of skin chemical that protects them from sunlight, hencing the "shadow" theme, whilst the epic variant doesn't. Because of this, it must cause the skin to swell up. So, the epic grumpyre must have developed a technique that regenerates its skin when it bursts. As stated in the bio, it does the job, but it's like a curse.
Next, it's large ears. I'm guessing that this is both a defense/hunting mechanism and a location system. Because it can't create a smoke screen like it's counterparts, it must have adapted large ears to sense predators/prey. Not only that, but I'm guessing that because of its weird skin, it sometimes has to resort to somewhere dark. Probably caves. So it must have _probably_ adapted large ears for cave echolocation.
Now onto the wings. Because of its slightly transparent wings, that means it's either already has nanopillar wings, or it has less transparent nanopillars.
Finally, the bio states that it likes to enjoy a late night snack. From this, I'm getting that it's an omnivore rater than a hemovore. So I'm guessing it like to steal food, causing it to become hunted.
Also, like monsters such as pompom, congle and cybop, this monster is intelligent enough to know human language.
And that's all! Feel free to say what you think about this, maybe give some criticism.

The weird thing in MSM...
Monsters are perfectly fine on both land (Most islands) and water. (Water Island). They can even vocalize with no muffle, suggesting that most monster's don't need oxygen. This also could just be a lore inconsistency.
Also, for #MSM Draw, baby monsters looking out the window, and seeing what they think i s Yool, but in reality, it's just a Gobblygoard falling so fast it's catching fire.
Hmmm... next will be wublins and wubboxes. I have few questions. If choose wublin, will you do structure of the statue, and if wubbox, normal rares and epics do in one section or not.
The wublins are especially interesting because since they were made only to be friends without natural "mosnter evolution" there will be very little to compare specific anatomy parts to existing animals, like the random branches on screemu or the gross berries on mawlch

He knows all this info but still calls a group of octopi "octopuses". That aside, this is a good video!
The Epic Grumpyre seems to have no shadow spewing or horns, but has rapidly bursting blisters (extreme regeneration), and bat-like ears
If anything, the shadowy soot is more like a natural sunscreen.

I feel like since there’s evidence of it being both a prey and a predator, it might just be in the middle, and like bears and rats, it could just be extremely omnivorous
The Grumpyre has identical "holes" on opposite wings, something leading to the nanostructure theory, as that would be extreamly unlikly to actually happen

I think I'm most excited to see Uuduk, Spytrap, Mushaboom, and Reebro.
Mushaboom looks kind of like an example of symbiosis.

it was probably to make grumpyre easier to animate, but the holes are in the same spots on every wing, suggesting that they were put there. no accidents here! what I'm saying is that maybe grumpyres do have those nanopillars. that would explain the designs.
My take on the holes in the wings is that they are from prey that fought back and not nano pillars.

Since the epic grumpyre has been released for a while now I think the epic grumpyre is white to fit into cold island better and the bubbling skin is escaping hot gas to cook its food

i have a small theory about it and what if the grumpire was both like for example lets say that it hunts gobleygourds (since vampire bats tend to hunt bunnies and turkey) but the grumpire is prey for some monsters like epic or rare toe jammer since toe jammers have a very solid body so how about it uses both like it starts without holes and then when it gets its first holes it regenerates them or creates holes with the skin and then it starts selecting monsters who give it more melanin and become darker and the eyes can work to difference prey or predator and the synestesia works for both terms

Why am I suddenly imagining the next art should be some monsters (Mammots, Pompoms, Tweedles, furcorns, ect) chasing a grumpire whith pitchforks and torches? (Like what people did to vampires)
