This was an arc field with terrific strength in depth; there are really good horses from first to last. The best horse (Mtoto)finished second, from an impossible position, but credit to Tony Bin who was a very tough and consistent performer.
Mtoto was the business. In 1987 he was the best, as he proved by beating Reference Point in the Eclipse. This was RP's best ever run in a contest that challenges Grundy and Bustino's King George for the title Race of the Century.
What a heartbreak.....Mtoto was robbed of an unbeaten 5YO campaign by his own brilliance. I feel Roberts thought with Mtoto's blistering turn of foot, it didn't matter where he had him turning into the straight....reminiscent of Mr Piggott and Nijinsky (except Nijinsky was given a bit more of a chance of winning by his jock!)
Yes he was because he won but this race contained several mini legends who were much better during their careers;Diminuendo,Mtoto ,Unfuwain(Nashwan`s brother) and the great and very versatile Triptych.
As in Dancing Brave's Derby, the best horse didn't quite get there. Mtoto was brilliant. His turn of foot challenged that of the great DB. Over 10 he was the best ever.
Tony Bin comes from well off the pace the same as Mtoto. As i recall he had been running in Gr.1´s all season. Without taking anything away from his Italian trainer, if this horse would have been trained in Newmarket or Ireland he would probably have been a champion with many big race victories.
Tony Bin did, indeed, run in Group 1s in 1988. Just see him being soundly beaten by Mtoto in the King George - a smaller field produced a truer result.
Can't agree with you there. Tony Bin had almost 3 lengths on Mtoto at 200m. He got "first run" on him. The race was nicely set up for hold-up horses but Mtoto lost position turning in. Fair play to Tony Bin though.
forse mtoto era il miglior cavallo del lotto..veniva forte in fondo da posizione impossibile solo perche' fece la corsa su tony bin ,che al contrario di cio' che avvenne nelle king georges lo anticipo' vincendo meritatamente!
Isn't that rather like suggesting that Daley Thompson wasn't a truly great athlete because he only won two Olympic golds, or criticising Alain Prost becasue he only won the F1 World Championship four times or arguing that Lammtarra was average becuase he only won the Derby, the King George and the Arc? I know I'm guilty of wearing Mtoto-coloured spectacles, but I think your implicit disparagement of Mtoto's achievements and ability for the reason you give is unfounded.

Darn it! Mtoto lost again when I watched this clip. I keep hoping that one day he'll get up on the line.
Mtoto also won back to back Prince of Wales' Stakes Royal Ascot in 1987 and 1988.
I can't bear to watch a race where the best horse doesn't win. I am gutted every time I watch this Arc.

I chortle every time I read your comment F1.

Excellent stuff, reminds me of my lost youth ... I don't think Graham Goode even *mentions* the winner until the final furlong.

That's quite good for him though as he normally only mentions the winner near the line!!
ウマ娘シングレで出てきたアイツのモデルはまさか凱旋門賞馬だったとわ…

Could be, frank; but I think it was simply the size of the field that beat him on Arc day.
Just viewed it again and Mtoto still didn't make it.
