Hey yall, AP scores just came out, and I want to say that because of this channel I got a 5. I watched all your videos the night before and walked in to the test having never done a practice test and rocked it. You are truly a go my friend. My advice to others cramming: memorize the formats for each of the essays and the rhetorical device words and you'll be fine.
i didn’t sign up for the ap lang course but i wanna flex on my english department at tomorrow’s practice exam 🙏🏼 because of you i will trust this channel
I've been having a hard time interpreting what my teacher has been telling our class about the synthesis essay but you just made it a bajillion times easier for me! Thank you very much!!!
Hi 2024 AP Lang students, good luck on the exam! I enjoyed helping a lot of you through tutoring, DMs, and comments this year. After the exam, feel free to come back and let me know if you found my videos useful.
@@epicedits2334 You're allowed to use those words for all of the essays! It's often hard to write sentences without those words. One general piece of advice: try to use powerful action verbs (ex. persuade, implore, condemn, galvanize, spotlight, ignite, explore, etc.) whenever you can.
@@MsPeerEditor So you do not get points taken off for words like: is, are, was, has and stuff like that? That’s weird. My teacher took many points of my essays for using them. Is it not required by the AP Exam to follow those rules?
Watching this now as a Jr. in college and this is the best, easiest explained video on how to write a synthesis/research essay! I had no idea how I was gonna write 3 papers in one week, but this video helped me form an outline for all of them and motivate me to finish them. Thank you!
I have a practice synthesis essay today, and my teacher didn't give much information on how to write these. The prompt happens to be exactly the same. Thanks!
Hi I just want to say AP Scores came out - i followed exactly what this channel said for all three essays and got a 5! Super super helpful especially for the synthesis essay which was my weakest which became my strongest after watching this. What I found helpful: I highly recommend using as many documents as you can and including refutations at the end of your bps like says to - thank you so much!
Great video! Loved the tips you gave. I find the "+" vs. "-" strategy pretty effective, but it may be even better to write out a plus or a minus after each new idea in the source, not just the top of the page, especially since from what I've seen, a lot of the sources the AP exam uses have recently argued for both sides directly, thus taking a more observational/bilateral stance. There's also the thing with the three-pronged thesis, which according to my AP Language teacher isn't very sophisticated and will usually at best score a 4/6. For most people, including me, a 4 is definitely acceptable, especially when you're on a time constraint. The example you provided would probably be an exception to the scoring pattern since it is well-thought out, but what my teacher advises is that, on the thesis, you abstract/generalize your three reasonings into one idea, and then introduce your different reasons in the body-paragraphs. The grader might like that more and you'd be more likely to bring attention to your essay. You can also try extracting the general tone of all the sources and applying it to your own essay to earn the sophistication point and pique your reader's interest. Overall, great video. And yes, counterarguments are very important! for the viewers, if you struggle with creating/addressing counterarguments, my best advice would be to keep searching through youtube for dedicated outlines/guides on the topic (or if you have a good teacher, ask them!).
Thanks so mucchh! I have a question though. My AP teacher said not to be using outside knowledge and only the sources but your video says otherwise. What should I do? 😫
Great question! In my opinion, it doesn't hurt to use outside knowledge, but it's not required. I would use outside knowledge if you feel that it enhances your argument or adds a perspective that is not already included in the provided sources.
Try CHORES. Current events, history, outside knowledge, readings, entertainment, and science. If you can connect two of these to each line of reasoning, you likely will get higher evidence points.
How should you approach a synthesis essay when all of the sources support the same idea? In the practice essay I’m doing all six sources support are pro and none contain anti material. Any recommendations?
I would definitely choose the pro side and craft a strong, original counterargument to help you earn the sophistication point. This video will show you how to craft your counterargument and rebuttal: th-cam.com/video/wtzhe_Ae6qg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Toax-j7Z-QI18dQ2
So are the claims the three things you mentioned in your thesis? The civic engagement, educational resources, and technological skills? Or are those big ideas, and you need smaller claims supporting those, if so, what would those sub claims be fore the three big claims.
There's no hard rule, but I would try not to use personal pronouns such as "you" in the synthesis or argument essays. The reason behind this is that personal pronouns tend to seem informal.
@@mark_swag_lord idk if im too late but if ur referring to the reader its best to just use a general "one may think, one may say... from experiences, one may.."
@@yopapian how do you think you're going to do? I'm planning on coming back to this comment after I get results and seeing if I got what I guessed. For me maybe a 2?
Just finished...I didn't finish any of my essays ...though I think I did a good job overall...thanks, I probably would've done worse if I didn't watch your videos
I usually skim the sources to try to find evidence that I can incorporate into my essay. I specifically pay attention to the first sentences of paragraphs to understand the main points of an author's argument. Additionally, I look for numbers, which could be valuable statistics, and I search for people's names. If the author of a source includes someone's name, they might be referring to a subject matter expert or an individual with a relevant anecdote.
Your claims should be points that support your thesis using relevant details. For example, one claim might be: In a world where online forums allow anonymous users to offer polarizing views and harass their opposition, library events provide a common space where people can learn each other's stories and engage in civil discussions in person.
That's a really good question, and honestly I'm not completely sure what the answer is. I think it's because the norm at the time in which Luce made her speech (1960) was to automatically use he/his rather than more inclusive gender pronouns when referring to a hypothetical person.

Is this basically just like argumentative but with confinement to just these 6 sources, rather than your own knowledge?
It is in argumentative style essay that synthesizes evidence from different sources to show why one helps the other prove a point.
So are the claims the three things you mentioned in your thesis? The civic engagement, educational resources, and technological skills? Or are those big ideas, and you need smaller claims supporting those, if so, what would those sub claims be fore the three big claims.
