Turkey: Can democracy and Islam go together? - Docu

  • Is Turkey a country where democracy and Islam can be combined? Turkey is an interesting case as it is a place where political ideas of democracy are not new but where also a lot of people are religious and practicing Islam. Can democracy and Islam go together and if yes, how? An investigative documentary about Turkey, democracy and Islam.
The classic dilemma of democracy is that the system can raise itself by majority vote. A democracy can in theory also enter Sharia. This makes Turkey an interesting test case for political commentator and Newsweek columnist Fareed Zakaria, who earlier warned that democracy can degenerate into a tyranny of the majority. In 'Turkey: Can democracy and Islam go together we try to found out if this is a possible combination.
The summer of 2007 was the hour of truth in national Turkish politics. The Conservative Islamic AK Party redeemed its parliamentary majority and AKP leader Abdullah Gül became the new president of the constitutionally secular Turkish Republic after three rounds of voting. It is an abomination to the secular forces that blame the conservative Muslim Gül and his similar devout wife that wears the Islamic headscarf for their Islamic origins. But also, in Europe these developments are looked at with suspicion. Remarkable detail: from all Turks it is the AK supporters that wish to join Europe. Because of the trade. But also because of the freedom of belief.
We outline the current situation in Turkey during the theme week WE ARE THE BOSS (5 to 12 October 2007). The makers followed in summer 2007 both the secular and the Islamic camp in the run-up to the parliamentary elections. In Kayseri, stronghold of Anatolia's economic tigers and the electoral base of the AKP, Abdullah Gül and the local candidate Murat Cingi are portrayed. From Istanbul we look at Turkey through the eyes of former general Sener Eruygur, avid secularist and chairman of the Association for Preservation of the Mind of Kemal Atatürk. From the New York offices of Newsweek, Fareed Zakaria, draws conclusions about modernity, moderate Islam and the future of Europe. Will Turkey become the first true Islamic democracy?

Democracy is messy in nature. Look at dirty stink you india for example where things move! But Indonesia, Tunisia Malaysia. These are working much better then the perceived modern turkey. However I don't believe democracy alone are enough what any political system should has is freedoms, economic growth, stability. I mean Somalia is a democracy but I prefer to live in absolute monarchy Qatar where my freedoms and life protected and a state well-governed rather than choosing Somalia, Congo etc.

I would like to clarify some points about secularism: Secularism does NOT equal atheism or irreligiousness. Secularism is one of the foundational pillars of the Republic of Turkey; it's not necessarily anti-religion; it's done to repress pro-religious fanatism.
Of course, the military supported secularism and has done many terrible things in the name of secularism--especially on 28th April 1997 and 12th September 1980 coup d'état--one must accept this fact. Even though this anti-democratic state does not legitimize political Islam, it's arguably worse than military order. Political Islam is nothing but a totalitarian order in which one must obey the leader or, say, sultan.
If we want to have democracy in Turkey, we must have a liberal and secular (again, I highly want to warn, that does NOT include any enforcement against religious people) policy.

@@cradleofanal It means struggle, it can In all forms, even good to your parents or working hard is jihad. But thanks to that one specific day in 9/11 the views on the Islamic world (specifically middle east, which is where Islam started) changed drastically into; disgust, fear and even hate. A proof of this is that most of the anti-muslim sentiment/memes/political posts were ALL post-9/11. The reason people now view Islam and Muslims as a barbaric, uneducated and obstacle religion is because of that single event. If 9/11 or the war terror never happened, and we have better airport security and the borders around the terro dominated areas were closed, we would be living in a much accepting and peaceful world. "How does this work? not everyone is American." You might say.
The way it works is that America was the most influential nation, it ideas and thoughts spread to all over the western and the non-western world, so the hate generated by the "middle east is a terrorist cesspit" propaganda fed to American media to create support for the invasion caused people to get a very, very negative view on Muslims.
For the war on terror, whoever, Islamist *radical* (focus on these two words, Islamist and radical, not the regular Muslim) recruiters and leaders used America's invasion on the Arab land (Arabs represent most of the Muslim world and are (trust me) very bias towards opinions coming from themselves) as a "proof of the west being the enemy of the word of God and Islam" (Read more on the "War on Islam" conspiracy theory in Wikipedia) and "The true enemy of the ummah (Muslim Nation as in unity in Islamic religion)". Back to what I said before on America being the most influential, the Western world also viewed this as a threat, a danger to their society and values (because apparently *radical* Islam is what most Muslims follow).
This is why today, people like *you* (probably) see Islam as autistic barbarism, and even made ridiculous claims that democracy doesn't work for Muslims because brown people are "morally and ethnically bankrupt to be able to have a democracy". And apparently, "people get the governments they deserve", ignoring the history of colonialism, and civil wars which were caused by it, that led to mass corruption and abuse of the broken state of many of these nations by first world countries that happen to be western (sad coincidence), like France with sub-saharan countries.
I think this is enough for you, friend.

I think Fareed Zakariyyah got something wrong here. He sees Turkey becoming secular as a form of "modernization". This idea of modernization seems to be a very vague term and it depends who you are talking to. Actually, we don't need a secular state to make economic reforms and so on. I mean Islamic banking is now one of the most popular forms of banking in Istanbul. Trade agreements, treaties and so on are all based on Islamic tradition. We can look back to the treaty of hudaybiyyah, the dealing with the non-Muslims of Madinah, the relationship with the kingdom of Abyssinia, the delegates sent to Persia and Rome. If we look toward the time of Umar ibn Al-Khattab for example, you can see the public services he established and later even laws for public trash services during the Umayyad, Abbassid and such all derived from Islamic rulings.

    • @Cryboutet
      @Cryboutet 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

You simply are losing the rationale.
You see Islam as "superior" and everything derrived from it to be superior and you think it'll be same always. But my friend you're wrong. Islamic banking is popular because of the nudge government do to make it popular. Secularism is necessary, a state blatantly claiming to be of certain religion is just "medieval and stupid" coz it not only pushes the other religious demography to backseat, it also comes at disadvantage when we talk about "opportunity cost" associated with secularism. Secularism not only inculcates "best practises" but also shatters any boundaries which any state religion(say islamic laws) would draw.
Turkey is well off coz kamal ataturk chose to be secular and accepted modernisation. Modernisation as in , he gave up "old" islamic rules and framed his country to get and try everything on the plate.
So secularism and modernisation are very much related if taken practically.

You should know what is democracy first.
Basically, people consider democracy as choosing one's political leader with their own hand but that's just a half-way answer for defining democracy.
Democracy has three basic principles come together : universal human rights must be guaranteed by rule of law / fair system for choosing politicians by people / utilitarianism doesn't harm human rights
Without those conditions coming together or at least people and government trying to fulfill that, we can't consider any kind of political system as democratic.

For example malaysia and Indonesia in southeast asia, are an islamic state that use democracy for decades and have no problems blending it in their religion. @Tony DC First, Allah is the name of God. Because of your historic stupidity, let me learn you that what's known now as Turkey was the land of the Byzantine Empire and there were no Turks back then.
Islam is the belief and pathway that Allah (God) revealed to his last messenger to the sons of Adam.
Our prophet Muhammed wants humans to save themselves from hell by converting to Islam, the religion of all prophets. Also, he told us that the people of the book (old and New Testament) have changed the scriptures in favor of money and this temporary life. In addition, they made Allah (our God) angry by worshiping the good people like Jesus and what the Christian world calls now saints, so they left worshiping who deserves worshiping and started worshiping his creatures.
Allah (our God) told us in the Quran that Jews are more dangerous to Islam than Christians. Because Jews knew the truth, but they didn't declare it, for envy in their corrupt hearts. One of the last words of the Prophet Muhammed was "Allah damns Jews and Christians, they have worshiped their prophets' graves"

i think, the main problem of muslims and including most of their scholars, are too much "legalistic," (fiqh oriented) as if ayatollah (god guidance) is only one: al Quran (holy scripture). factually, God him self, in very first revelation to Muhammad, is not asking Muhammad to study (iqra) the holy Quran (cos the kitab doesn't exist at that time), instead He command Muhammad to study (iqra) other ayatullah, we called as ayat Kauniyah (universe and all of His Creations in it). That why in serious and encyclopedic Islamic traditional school, we always taught that beside al Quran, there is another god guidance (ayatullah) called ayat kauniyah (the universe and all god creation in it). and for qur'anic scholars, we also know --from al Quran it self, there are two others god guidance (ayatullah), that we as muslims should seek for God Guidances: called as ayat insaniyah (human being) and ayat tarikhiyyah (human history).
if muslims, scholars, and other religious people, uses all 4 God Guidance in balanced ways, we will not always fall into legalistic point of view when we talking or examining Islam point of view about woman/feminism, politics, evolution, LGBTQ issues, democracy, etc. for me, if sociology, political science, statistics, history on the rise and fall of civilizations/countries (as interpreters of ayat kauniyah and ayat tarikhiyyah) comes to the conclusion that democracy is the best political system in the world for advancement human civilizations, then all Muslims should choose democracy as preferable political system to practice in all Muslims majority countries. also if expert on biology, doctors, psycholog, etc (as interpreter of ayat kauniyah and ayat insaniyah) , said that beside man and woman (as gender), we also has intersex, hemaprodyte, woman with more testosterones, man with more X chromosome, etc, then all Muslims should choose to agree that god him self gave us guidance / ayat that beside man and woman as gender, there also another genders/pronouns that we should cherish, protect, and respect (cos if we don't respect others God Creations, are similarly with we don't respect our God as their Creator).
if we stubborn, only picks, one ayatullah, we called al Quran (holy scripture/ayat Qauliyah), as the one and only god guidance to follow, then muslims and also others religious peoples, scholars, will fall upon into legalistic point of view (fiqh oriented) when we examining what is islamic point view on everything under the sky. wahabbiyah, isis, al Qaida, etc are trapped in this narrow point of view about Islam and its believe. of course, for responsible and encyclopedic islamic teaching, all those narrow point views on Islam are wrong (at least incomplete), misguided, and disrespecting God.
umar bin khattab, as on of few sahabah (closed friend of Prophet), several times choose to disregarding some textual issues stated clearly in al Quran, and pick other decision when he choose as Muhammad successor, as leader (khalifah/amir), if there are more fairer and more justice way (socially) on making decision as Amir/Leader, rather than choose from what already state very clear in al Quran, he always choose more fairer and more justice, even others sahabah question his decision. and as we know it, umar bin khattab is one of several sahabah that guaranteed by the Prophet that he is going to heaven. his way of leadership decision, was a hard evidence that the closest friend to Muhammad, also not only consider holy scripture (ayat Qauliyah), but also social aspect (ayat kauniyah), when he making decision as a leader.
nobody in umar bin khattab time, dare to called umar bin khattab as heretic/bid'ah, kuffar, or infidel. but in modern era, several of loud muslims, loud muslim scholars, and most of jihadist will immediately call us heretic/bid'ah, kuffar, or infidel if we also uses 3 other God Guidances beside ayat Qauliyah, when we speak, analyze, examining islamic point of view on everything under the sun. how strange is it, if we following completes God Guidance's, then be called as infidel, kuffar, or bid'ah. legalistic approach (fiqh oriented) on Islam has bad impact on advancement of Islamic civilization, and has backward effect on development of its peoples: the Muslims. but yes, in Islamic jurisprudence (ushul fiqh), we also has similar concept with Umar way, but unfortunately has more narrowed approach and clearly far from sufficient to be implemented in modern era, we call them: maslahah mursalah and maqashid syariah.
if we also incorporate social science, biology, technology, history, political science, psychology, etc (as part of rightful interpreter all of God Guidancs/ayatullah), many problem we faced today in many part of Muslim countries, will be addressed in responsible way. after all, in golden age of Islamic civilizations, all of our scholars/ulama was also scientist that breed many scientific discipline. fiqh, kalam and falsafah, factually quite obsolete for addressing social, economic, and political problem in modern era, and most of them derived only from ayat Qauliyah, which is incomplete way to sorting our problem in modern era. lets to back to the complete of God Guidance on solving problem in Muslims world. and stop kuffar/infidel calling game. lets go back to allah via ayat Kauniyah, ayat Insaniyah, ayat Qauliyah, and ayat Tarikhiyyah as a complete way on addressing our problems.

Sin is universal problem. Sin is ubiquitous. Humanity contaminated by sin. Sin in us by default, not learnt, not taught. Sin manifests in many forms - evil, crime. Sin is the opium. The origin of sin is unanswered.
    My journey.
Sin is pre-existing in all. Nobody taught us to sin. Sin pre-dates The Bible. The Bible explains origins of sin. The Bible provides remedy for pre-existing sin, through Jesus Christ death and resurrection. The Bible is best selling book in the world for this reason. Sin is real, The Bible is relevant. Sin is born at every child birth. Sin is disease of heart, and Jesus Christ is the cure.
Satan is the enemy, came to steal, kill and destroy. Misleads us to blame good loving God. God is not the author of evil.
Media, Police, Defense, Judiciary, Penitentiary, Security, Contracts confirm sin exists.
The origins of life, natural laws, sin, morals, purpose, meaning, conscience, music, creativity, intelligence, beauty, color, nature, water, air, light and amalgamation, remain unevidenced - elsewhere.
We love truth when it enlightens us, but hate when it convicts us.
Instructing to "Heart wash" from sin is not "Brainwash".
God created universe, placed natural laws, made humans in His image, gave talents, instructed to multiply and explore - The Initiation of Science. Science is the legitimate child of natural laws. Without natural laws science has no foundation.
We are created with good purpose and meaning. We are good. Then sin entered through satan and we all fallen. Disease, despair, deformities, deficiencies, depression, stress, guilt, greed, hate, anger, rebellious spirit, spiritual death entered. Sin plays spoilsport.
Unloose the Soul from the tight knot of sin. Soul outlasts death.
Sinners cannot save themselves from sin. Jesus Christ, the Holy God, intervened, willingly died on The Cross and resurrected, for remmissions of our sins, to save us from sin and hell.
We are weak at the core, however we try to portray otherwise. We need Holy God's help, who is willing to help with open arms.
Unable to find any motive any reason for Jesus Christ to die willingly on Cross and resurrect - except His love to save us from pre-existing sin and hell.
Nobody died for our sins and resurrected - except Jesus Christ. Exclusivity
    Jesus Christ claimed:
"I am The Way, The Truth and The Life". "I am The Resurrection and The Life".
    "I am The Good Shepherd".
Jesus Christ has the authority to forgive sins.
Religion says "Do". Jesus Christ says "Done".
Religion is man's attempts to 'search gods'. Jesus Christ came from heaven in 'search of sinful man' to save from sin.
Salvation from sin and hell is not earned through works or deeds or pilgrimages or rituals or ceremonies or traditions or cultures or meditations or public displays or hypocrisy or making personal sacrifices or making animal sacrifices.
Salvation from sin and hell is free, but not cheap. Because Jesus Christ laid His life on The Cross, and resurrected.
God loves the sinner, but hates the sin. Just like a parent loves child, but hates disease in child.
We are saved by God's grace, not by our works.
Karma is getting what we deserve. Grace is getting what we don't deserve. Only Grace can be pre-fixed with word Amazing. Amazing Grace. Karma is not Amazing, it is depressing.
GRACE: Getting what we don't deserve - i.e. forgiveness of sin, eternity in heaven through Jesus Christ.
MERCY: Not getting what we deserve - i.e. punishment of sin, separation from God, eternity in hell.
Other side of death is eternity. Either in hell; or in heaven through Jesus Christ.
God offers grace and mercy for free through Jesus Christ death and resurrection.
Jesus Christ suffered, ridiculed, spat-on, humiliated, crucified on The Cross, and therefore He understands our pain. He raised victorious, we will too. Those who endure till end are victorious.
Jesus Christ coming again to judge all. The doors will be closed. Jesus Christ reveals every mystery, answers every question. We all deserve to know the truth. He is The Alpha and The Omega. He judges everyone.
One day every knee shall bow, every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
The First Christmas - Jesus Christ came to earth from heaven to save us from pre-existing sin.
The First Good Friday - Jesus Christ crucified to The Cross, died willingly for remission of our sins.
The First Resurrection Day, also linked to Easter - Jesus Christ resurrected from death.
Jesus Christ made entry to Holy Heaven free through Him. Repent of sin and be saved. Easy.
The First Coming of Jesus Christ - He is Lamb, slaughtered for remission of sins
to save us from sin and hell. And resurrected.
The Second Coming of Jesus Christ - He will be Lion, The Judge.
    The Lamb and The Lion.
Jesus Christ forgave all who crucified Him, and now forgives all, even who reject, ridicule and mock Him. He loves all unconditionally.
Believe, trust, repent of pre-existing sin in Jesus Christ that He died for remission of our sins and resurrected, and coming back to judge, accept Him as Lord and Saviour, and be saved from sin and hell. Any time, any where. Even now. Simple.
Nothing to lose, everything to gain.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
I found God loved me regardless of sins, weaknesses and rejections by others. As sinner I cannot save myself through deeds. He believed me and has faith in me. I am not in competition with others. God loves you all, individually.
(My journal. Journey to life - after testing all 'isms' and religions, after failing to find origins, purpose and meaning of life, after swallowing pride, egos, anger, hate, depression.)

"But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father". Jesus don't know when he will return back. How can a real God says he don't know?
I also didn't understand why only Jesus is considered as God while David and Solomon also called as "Son of God"?.
Some said because Jesus is the only begotten son. Then what about Adam and Eve? They are supposed to be God too right?
If sin is pre-existing, then what happen to people who live before Jesus? are they going send to hell eternally by the merciful forgiving God?
If i'm the Father, I can just forgive everyone without sacrificing my son. I can just simply wipe everybody's sin.
If Jesus already cover sacrifice himself for us to live in heaven eternally, does it means that I can do whatever I want? steal, kill, etc? because Jesus already released us from all sins. 😁

@@ahmadrifaieazhari3654 Jesus was total God and was total human when He was on earth. He prayed to Father God as a human being, to teach His disciples how to live and pray to God.
David, Solomon, Adam and Eve are humans and sinners and not died for remissions of sins of everyone. Only Jesus did.
Before Jesus Christ, there was the era of Law. The people were judged by the law and animal sacrifice was the remedy of sins. But Jesus came from heaven and died, shed His precious sinless blood on The Cross and resurrected and cancelled animal sacrifices.
Without the shedding of blood there is no remissions of sin. Father God can wipe away everyone's sins, but He chose to sacrifice His son Jesus to be the sacrificial lamb who shed His Blood.
Jesus emphatically said for those who repent of sins to not to sin anymore as human body becomes His temple. If anyone lives his or her own ways, it is their choice. Jesus never enforces.
Jesus loves you, me and everyone unreservedly.
