- When amateur archaeologist Derek Batten bought a plot of land advertised as a castle and moat, there was little sign of a castle other than a leafy mound surrounded by a ditch. The team uncover the truth about the site's past and even discover a link to William the Conqueror. The team is joined by castles expert Philip Dixon. Phil Harding gets kitted-out in chainmail as a Saxon footsoldier, facing a mounted Norman warrior on a Spanish stallion.

I cannot quite wrap my head around the fact that so many roads in rural England are still following, or nearly following, the paths of roads laid down and used by the Romans nearly 2000 years ago.
I love the fact that they always involved the locals and especially the children of the locals to further the love of their heritage.
Look at Tony, solving boundary disputes between landlowners. He has the makings of a great king!
I wish you would give the original publication date for these old films. I mean, Tony Robinson can actually jog and has not developed his distinctive enormous belly yet. This film itself is archeological gold.

My ancestors castle in England was called Shipbrook. He fought in the battle of Hastings with William the Conqueror. The Norman castle isn't there anymore. His name was Sir Richard DeVernon, was DeReviers.

Sometimes it seems like English Heritage gets in the way of proper, meaningful archeology and discoveries

English Heratage have forgotten the whole idea of a scheduled monument.
They were not intended to forbid Archaeological Inspection. They were supposed to stop unscrupulous owners and developers destroying them.
Not allowing Archaeologists to work on the sites defeats the whole point of protecting them.
You can see the English Heritage thoughts change though the years watching this show from not hardly digging Scheduled sites in the early seasons to allowing quite a lot of digging in the later seasons
Part of the reason they don’t allow for entire sites to be dug, or the same site to be dug multiple times in frequent intervals, is to allow for time to pass such that technology can develop. The “geophys” stuff, for example, lets them find stuff without even needing to dig it up - leaving more in the ground when technology develops even further.

It’s not a motte and Bailey, castle. It’s a ring work. They even state it in the opening of the episode.
Most likely the Motte and Bailey is a reference to the original advert for the property. Also, often the TT are called to investigate one thing only to find out it is something completely different. Remember the episode with the property filled with Victorian follies? That said, be the pedant you are and have a wonderful life!
It's more it's just addressed in the episode! Tony asks if it's a Mott and Bailey, and Mick tell him that it's a ringwork.

If you have Prime Video they have all of the episodes. They used to anyway. It's been a couple of years since I watched but there used to be 20 seasons I believe.
John Gator seems to be as he is in most Time Team digs always telling everybody that this site will be a 'Nightmare' for him to Geophys, this episode it is all the tree roots that will spoil things for him.

Why you only get 3 days to muck around the castle
The Time Team format is 3 days only for digs which is the charm, and the challenge, of the series.

After the Battle of Hastings, the Normans took over the land. As a result, did the Saxon aristocracy slip down the social scale into the "lower class"? Did they still retain gradually smaller and smaller amounts of land or were they automatically displaced? Obviously, some of the Saxon knights might have gone abroad to offer their services to foreign lords and some Saxon nobles went into the church, what happened to the general Saxon nobility? How many generations did it take to go from Saxon nobleman to working man?

I'm conflicted about the Normans. On the one hand, they were excellent warriors and were efficient at establishing law and order and on the other hand they were often quite bloodthirsty and cruel. A lot of Norman blood flows through my veins and I don't know what to do.

whats with these heritage types ! ours here are old biddy fops that just like power. considering there not doing any digging says there not experts so they should be told where the experts are going to dig (because its all buried again after.) and be thankfull they`ve got jobs.
The overprotective attitudes inhibit discovery. As long as qualified professionals are doing the work, let them dig to their hearts content.

Always ask the military why. Both the British and American military have a lot of experience as occupying forces and we put priorities on rebuilding roads, communications then civilian hospitals, schools and providing food. I believe in the past a monastery or a place for nuns might have been the equivalent to a hospital? Regardless of access to roads or rivers, if you are an occupying force you MUST have a presence every so much distance in order to "keep the peace" (prevent simple mayhem and banditry) and prevent uprisings without you detecting it. No castles or troop barracks, then you have no means to detect or break up massing of local militias. If you, even an occupying force, do NOT perform the basic functions of government by keeping the peace, keeping roadways and rivers (another means of transportation) freely usable and safe you will have uprisings. If you are successful you will have loyalty although maybe not expressed quite that way. Robin Hood will either be considered by the citizenry as an outlaw who preys upon them or their savior depending on how the government meets their needs or preys on the citizens (think Taliban). Taxes therefore need to be seen as maintaining infrastructure citizens use and keeping the peace or it will be seen as predatory. The USA has reached that tipping point and especially with the corruption in the White House and its cronies in the larger administration. Which is why in desperation rather than give up their bribes and do the right governing thing suddenly they want to provide free lunches to all students in schools across the nation even for families who do not need free food. The present can tell you a lot about the past, successes and failures.

why always "Three days"? please explain it or stop saying it.
My understanding is that the “three days” was the hook for the series: see how much history can be discovered even in just three short days. It also enabled experts with jobs at universities, English Heritage, or wherever to become much loved regulars on the show, because it was an additional job they could do on the weekend. The digs were proper archaeological digs following the usual protocol, though, with having a plan and permits for what they were digging and why, and the information they gained was written up and made available to other groups who might then plan a longer, more in depth dig at a site. It is perhaps best to think of the Time Team digs as exploratory digs assessing an archaeological site; and us viewers get to come along for the fascinating, educational, and entertaining ride!😁
i wonder why they bother with geophysics as it must be the most useless science in existence. i have been watching for years and mever found geophics evem remotely useful. in fact it always wastes everyone's time
Not true. Geophys is a crucial part of the show. And I’ve seen all the episodes on TH-cam, some episodes more than once. On the Roman villa sites, and many other sites, Geophys came through with important data. Over and over John and his team put the dig teams on countless targets that paid off. You should probably watch some more episodes.
