    Hey this was recorded on June 4, 1967. I was born that Sunday night after my beautiful mom had been in labor since Saturday night. I'm 53 yrs young and have recently come across this show and love it. I can't get enough of it. Thank you so much for posting.👍

    The 1960's were easily the best decade when it came to British women of the entertainment industry. Not only was there Jean Shrimpton, but there was also Jane Asher, Jane Birkin, Honor Blackman, Jacqueline Bissett, Pattie Boyd, Julie Christie, Petula Clark, Barbara Ferris, Judy Geeson, Susan George, Suzy Kendall, Sarah Miles, Marianne Faithfull, Hayley Mills, Charlotte Rampling, Vanessa and Lynn Redgrave, Diana Rigg, Dusty Springfield, Rita Tushingham, Twiggy, and Susannah York, just to name a few.
    Thumbs up if you agree with me.

    Jack Jones flew under the radar even with two Grammies, performing much of his time in Europe, San Francisco, and New York ....many say that JJ had the most gifted singing pipes in the business( frank Sinatra was quoted saying that) ....Jack performed middle of the road standards, later in life traveled the globe singing jazz and the American song book. Jack was considered a man of grace and elegance both in mannerism and in good looks. No one looked as stunning as JJ in a tuxedo and black bow tie . In his prime singing days 1966-1985 Jack stood alone as a straight up no nonsense singer, he touched peoples hearts in many ways, possessing a fabulous style and sound that always resembled his own person looks, stylish and grace, in many ways dreamy. I believe he is a legend in Europe, if not for the Beetles Jack would have won 7-9 Grammies ....he was sandwiched Between Elvis and the Beetles making it difficult to become a house hold name, nevertheless many consider Jack the purest soloist of our generation. His concerts and night club performances were notorious and spectacular. It was no secret famed Jerry Lewis was Jack’s favorite singer and even a Dean Martin and Sammy Davis we’re in somewhat awe of Jack’s brilliant pipes .

    • @loissimmons6558
      @loissimmons6558 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Paul Dance I agree wholeheartedly - I had the good fortune of meeting and interviewing Jack. His performance later was excellent. His voice was thrilling and he hit those notes with the utmost of ease! Judy Garland at one point considered him better than her main singing partner Mel Torme.

      Jack Jones is truly one of the greatest singers ever. I recommend watching him perform ' Live for Life ' on Jerry Lewis ' s show in 1968 and ' Wives and Lovers ' in Vietnam, 1965, on tour with Bob Hope both found on youtube. But I warn you, it might be emotional for those of us who remember those times.

    The movie that Jean Shrimpton was about to co-star in but John failed to name was called Privilege (1967), the story of a British pop idol who becomes a victim of his escalating celebrity. Both Jean and British pop singer Paul Jones made their movie debuts. The film failed at the box office and is seldom.seen. Jean only made one other film after this.

    Jack Jones had many hits on the Adult Contemporary chart including three that hit #1. But his best showing on the Billboard 100 was "Wives and Lovers" which only reached #14. The song has fallen so out of favor now that there isn't even a Wikipedia article about it. The lyrics, quite normal for a romantic song in 1963, are totally politically incorrect now. He didn't write the song. He just sang it. It was written by the team of Burt Bacharach (music) and Hal David (lyrics). So you know the totality of his lyric writing, David was also the lyricist for such hits as "Alfie", "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head", "This Guy's in Love with You", "I'll Never Fall in Love Again", "Do You Know the Way to San Jose?", "Walk on By", "What the World Needs Now is Love", "I Say a Little Prayer", "(There's Always Something There to Remind Me", "One Less Bell to Answer", "Anyone Who Had a Heart", "What's New Pussycat?", "The Look of Love", "Don't Make Me Over", and "(They Long to Be) Close to You". Most of his biggest hits were sung by women, principally Dionne Warwick.
    First, "Wives and Lovers": th-cam.com/video/cyNewwkfD2o/w-d-xo.html
    Then one of the three Bacharach and David songs to be inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame (and sung by Warwick): th-cam.com/video/ijhL9Y7skQs/w-d-xo.html

      On his previous appearance, I think Henry Morgan was introduced humorously as a curmudgeon, and being a curmudgeon was definitely his shtick. I wouldn't mind if this were his final appearance on WML because I, too, couldn't stand him in this episode. I'll take Robert Q. Lewis any day of the week -- he may be unctuous, but I find his questioning less annoying than Henry Morgan's.

    • @tjbnyc76
      @tjbnyc76 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ToddSF 94109 I'm a staunch defender of Robert Q. I like him, and don't find his unctuousness all that unctuous, actually. And unlike Mr. Morgan, he at least attempted to be charming. Morgan's curmudgeonly behavior somehow worked well within the context of I've Got A Secret, and with the chemistry of that show's panel, but it struck a discordant note when he was shoehorned into WML as a guest panelist.

      I actually hadn't minded Henry Morgan so much in his past appearances, but this time he really was obnoxious. I have noticed Robert Q. Lewis's unctuousness in the past, after people pointed it out. I never minded it as much as some apparently have. There was hardly any of that during Robert Q.'s most recent appearance on WML and I've always found him perfectly acceptable as a guest panelist -- which is one of the things he did on a lot of game shows back in the day. In fact, that's what I grew up knowing him as, a guest panelist.

    WML as an institution has been in denial for months that CBS has cancelled it. Tonight seems to be the acceptance stage of the grief process what with Bennett announcing the end of John the moderator and the start of John the Voice of America Director. It was a job that did not pan out.

    • @WhatsMyLine
      @WhatsMyLine  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      soulierinvestments Just to clarify for those who might not know-- the job did pan out to the extent that he did take the role of head of VOA after WML, but it only lasted about a year. John resigned when he learned that personnel changes were being made without his input, and was more or less out of the public entirely for the rest of his life with very few exceptions.

      ***** I think I'm going to be posting it in two versions: one as originally broadcast, with the original commercials added back in to the high quality GSN rerun, and one without commercials where I'm going to edit out the horrible bits of black video between clips. The pacing of the clip sequences is all but ruined by this editing choice in 1975. I can't believe it played well to anyone then, but to today's eyes, it's beyond amateurish.
      I figure I'll post two versions to circumvent the inevitable complaints if I only post a version I've tinkered around with. I've already seen at least a couple of people say they want to see it as it was originally broadcast. Though to be perfectly honest, the way it was originally edited for broadcast is just godawful.

    • @soulierinvestments

      soulierinvestments The special is a full 2 minutes shorter than the original just by virtue of removing the bits of black. 2 full minutes out of about 70 minutes of total video is bits of black between clips. That's how bad it is.

    Jack Jones's father Allan Jones. Allan has one of the more amusing connection to the Marx Brothers: being featured in "A Night at the Opera" (MGM 1935) so that, in the immortal words of producer Irving Thalberg, regular people will have someone to identify with. [What People?!?] Allan's voice also came out of Dennis Morgan's face in the "A Pretty Girl is Like a Melody" production number of "The Great Ziegfeld" (MGM 1936) -- arguably the longest and most berserk dance number in 1930s musical film.

      Don't forget his second Marx Bros. film, "A Day at the Races" (MGM, 1937), including the song "Tomorrow Is Another Day" whose title presumably riffs on the famous closing line of the novel "Gone With the Wind" (1936 book, 1939 movie).

    Trying not to look at the contestant's "line" when flashed on the screen.
    Fashion Model Jean Shrimpton: I vaguely remember Jean but she did look like a model or "mod" type woman. Of all people to figure her out it was Bennett Cerf.
    P A U L H. S M I T H: He took his time writing that name of his. Before Arlene was done with her 1st round of questioning, I look at this man I thought he was some type of food man or some sort. What is with Henry Morgan being so long winded. At one point when they honed in on camping or hunting I thought he might be a descendant of "Smith" or "Smith & Wesson"!
    Jack Jones: My favorite song of his; "With One More Look At You." His father is Actor/Singer Allan Jones and his mother is Irene Hervey. My favorite wife of his; Jill St. John!
    Andrea Ritchie: The Motorcycle Saleswoman. Oh well, that's what she did for a living!

    This episode illustrates one of the most difficult and rarely-discussed aspects of John Daly's job: timing the show. Being a live program with fairly long segments that couldn't be interrupted (unlike, say, the usual talk show), he had only a few tools with which to control the flow: he could set a time limit for the panel if they were wandering, he could prematurely flip the cards, and he could choose how long to chat with a contestant after the game was finished. Here he flips all cards for the tentmaker; if he had wanted to stretch the segment, he could have forced the panel to be more specific after Bennett hit the general area. At the end of the second MG segment, he faced a common dilemma: should he keep Jack Jones talking for a couple more minutes, or should he move on for a very short final segment? His batting average on these calls was very good. In this case, given that Jones wasn't very talkative and the backup contestant had a fun occupation, he went for the fourth spot -- a good decision.
    I think his constant need to keep an eye on the clock is part (though only part) of the reason John so disliked allowing contestants to demonstrate their specialties. Once they start, who knows how long it will take? The few cases where he agreed to allow demonstrations were cases (e.g. the Salvation Army Band, the calypso group) where the length of the performance could be known in advance so he could take that into account.

      @SuperWinterborn 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      dizzyology I agree with you in this. John had a lot of dilemmas regarding time and value to fight with. Not an easy task. His innate diplomatic skills and clear mind helped a lot to the long run of the show. I remember another occasion, when two students, working as garbage collectors, were given time to perform their own song. I suspect he had already heard them backstage because they did it quite well. :)

    • @dizzyology7514
      @dizzyology7514 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      SuperWinterborn
      Yes, the singing garbage collectors are another example. Their song was brief, they sang well, and (most important) John knew in advance exactly low long it would take, and could plan on using that time. Even so, if time had been tight he might not have allowed the song.
      John had to work against two strong forces to keep demonstrations under control: Arlene (who frequently requested them), and Gil Fates, who would have liked to run the show along the lines of IGAS or the syndicated version of WML. John's judgment about when to hold the line and when to relax the restrictions was excellent, IMO.

    • @SuperWinterborn
      @SuperWinterborn 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      dizzyology Besides WML 1950-67 being an excellent show and our TH-cam "Host of Honour" Gary's talent as monitor on these pages, John Daly was my main reason to get hooked on this series. Steve Allen became the next favourite, although I like them all. :)

    • @dizzyology7514
      @dizzyology7514 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      SuperWinterborn
      Agreed on both counts. The CBS WML was very much John's show. Gil Fates grumbles about that in his book, while our own host Gary celebrates the fact. I join the celebration -- I sadly admit that I'm old enough to have watched some of these programs when they were first broadcasst, and I admired John even back then. Steve was an excellent panelist -- even quicker with snappy comebacks than Arlene (and that's saying quite a lot). I think G-T would have been happy to keep Steve as a permanent panelist, but he had ambitions of his own that didn't fit that script very well. Still, he was a welcome guest panelist, and it's significant that he was pulled in for both "In Memoriam" shows (for Fred A and for Dorothy) as well as for the final broadcast episode. And the night when Steve was a MG and John blew it and gave away his identity was one of WML's classic moments.

      You've received a "yes" and a "no", so I will add a "maybe". There are times when it sounded like Carol Channing admitted having a parent with black ancestry and there are times when she was dismissing the idea. And of course she did not identify as black at the point in her life when she was a panelist on the original run of WML.

    I think Bennet Cerf should have disqualified himself in the first round because he knew Jean Shrimpton was 'in town' and didn't need to ask questions. By naming her so quickly, this episode had to fill in time at the end by bringing on the motorbike saleswoman for just 2 minutes. Mr Cerf was a good panellist but sometimes tried to show off his knowledge about places and what they were famous for as well as setting up laborious puns which today sound lame. He is funniest to me when he gets something wrong and looks annoyed or when John Daly outwits him and gets to an insult first.

    Goodness, it's just so frustrating to see John dilly dally with some of the contestants in jibber jabber taking up valuable time, and then that poor last contestant often has around sixty seconds. Some of these people have traveled hundreds or thousands of miles (like the chiropractor in Alaska that time). I'm so surprised the producers didn't budget their time more constructively.

    I've seen every episode so far. The show has become so predictable it stopped being interesting a good while ago. "...Have you appeared in the paper this week...?" All week, the panelists scan the entertainment pages to see who is in town that week. They memorize a list of names, and all they do is go down that list. Then comes the frozen-smile fest. omg how did they know it was me...?
    And there used to be a much more interesting range of guests with different backgrounds, from scientists to military persons to writers etc. Now it's nothing but show biz personalities.
    And what is up with Daly? He has been tripping over his words for months. "...please sign in, after you've entered, come in now, use the chalk, mumble mumble..." He got a guest's name wrong a few weeks earlier. He has gotten information incorrect about guests and their 'lines', products, company names, etc. And, almost every time, he has to ask, tediously, the guest if he has their name correct. Seriously? What's up with him?

    Henry Morgan. He makes me laugh sometimes. If G-T wanted questioning that generates laughs, they got their money's worth tonight. But we also see the foundation being laid for the nastiness between Henry, John, and Bennett in the future. also taking into account that the episode videotaped on this night which showed up on 20 August indicated some preliminary attitude between Henry and Bennett -- everything for 9 July is now in place
