His look. Really took me out of it. It looked great, but I think it’s really riding a hype train right now where in 5 years no one will really be talking about it. Good honest review man.
Bro. Jeremy has to be orlock for Halloween this year. He actually knocked it out of the park with his impression and imagine shaving his beard and keeping that mustache it would win the Internet.
Ok, I agree that there are too many 'possession' freak outs , and I wasn't a fan of the overall look of Orlock, but that's it. The movie was dripping with atmosphere and suspense. The entire movie had a heavy sense of dread. Orlock, being a purely evil being with no redeeming qualities, is a nice change, in my opinion. I didn't miss the romantic vampire trope at all.
Wow, we are worlds apart on this one. It's up there with The Substance as my favorite two horror films of 2024. To be fair, I will say this though. I'm seeing a trend. Those of us who grew up on the gothic horrors of Hammer Studios, Universal Monsters, Vincent Price/Roger Corman Edgar Allan Poe adaptations are falling in love with Eggers' Nosferatu far more than those who grew up with the more visceral horrors of the '70s and '80s. I grew up on both so Nosferatu was like going back home for me and wrapping myself in a warm, cozy goth blanket. I can see why it's not quite your cup of tea and that's totally fine.
I felt the exact same way! I saw all these glowing reviews and thought maybe I missed something but it did feel 100% like a possession movie more than a vampire movie. I recently watched the 79 version and like that a bit more. Excellent cinematography and effects etc but overall was a bit disappointed. Great spot on review!!!
Thank you for your honest review, as I am sick of hearing nothing but positive reviews from people with rose colored glasses. It may not be a bad movie, but movies are at a point where even the most MEH of films have people thinking they are great.
Yeah, I'm on the same page. Good cinematography, but I felt nothing for the characters and thought it was mostly pretty dull. I was also surprised just how little Eggers did to reinvent the story or make his interpretation unique. It just felt like every other Dracula movie...only much, much longer.
I agree with everything you said about this movie. I wanted to love it much more than I did. But the mustache, the lacking love story, and the over inflated pacing kinda killed it for me. The best part was the look of the setting.
You nailed this review Piz. No fear to Orlok, I compared him to professor Eggman from Sonic. I was also over the dream sequences...I love The Lighthouse and the Northman, at least it was nice to look at
It's refreshing to see a different take on film that i personally love. I could understand why you didn't like the movie but i actually quite liked his look, when he has his entire get up he reminds of romanian royalty during that time period. However i really dont agree with no atmosphere or dread. From what i saw the movie was dripping with it.
I really enjoyed it overall. Not that it didn't have its problems - especially with things like pacing and tension. There is an extended cut that's almost 3 hours that will be on the upcoming 4K, so hopefully that can iron out some of the issues. Thanks for the honest review!
While I did love this movie I agree with Piz about some editing/pacing issues here and there. That was my only real nitpick. I did however feel the dread and atmosphere and thought Orlok was fantastic. Loved the look and the voice. It shockingly follows the original 1922 film very closely.
Glad I’m not alone in this. It’s an incredibly slow and dull film. What really annoys me is people saying that we “don’t get it” Get outta here with that. Many great movies are slow burns but this is slow, tedious and self indulgent with little to no payoff.
@@MrT6R6E6Y6 I could tell by the previews this was Sominex. Eggers is reminding me of young, Ridley Scott. He’s preoccupied with the visuals to the point of no story.
After Checking it out last night, i did not think its was terrible. The cinematography was absolutely beautiful with the stark constrast and use of black and white with color. Just a great gothic look it had to it! Was it a slow burn of a movie? Absolutely! Which is why i can understand it not being for everyone. But I do think Dafoe's and Bill Skarsgaards performance do shed a little light on the film, no pun intended. Overall not a bad remake, but im glad we had a director to give life back to Nosferatu as a fan of the original silent classic! Like Jeremy said I thought it was cool! 👍🧛♀️Happy New Year Jeremy and Piz!
I had high hopes for this movie... until I saw Eggers was directing. I told everyone for the last 6 months to lower their expectations. I was right. Nice to see a man not giving in to the hype. All the best to you and Jeremy.
This is the most refreshing review I've seen of this movie.. I fell asleep once and had to keep myself awake for the rest I was kind of lost on what was going on and the look of Bill Skarsgard was ridiculous. I had hoped for better but what can you do. I guess I'll rewatch The Witch later.
My issue was the look of Orlok and Arron Taylor Johnson’s performance. Also there should be a clear difference between Dracula and Orlok. Dracula is supposed to be seductive and Orlok should be repulsive. I didn’t like that he was treated as the “irresistible being”. I also didn’t like that they added that Pervy background with his character, it’s felt like what the did with Freddy in the 2010 Elm street remake. Also his design was really not memorable. I’m also a huge Eggers fan. The lighthouse is in my opinion the great horror film in the last 10 years. Also the witch I’m obsessed with and the Northman is very underrated.
I agree with most of what you said. The movie looked stunning visually but it was cheesy, pretentious, drawn out, and never once did i feel horror or dread. The audience at my viewing were laughing at the over the top acting and accents from Ellen and Oorlok. Laughing at the appearance of Oorlok. Every monologue from those two characters were cringe. The sex scenes were weird and didn't fall into the story naturally, seemed excessive just for the sake of it. I was super excited for this movie and its the only one this year i went to theaters for, i was actually glad the audience reacted rhe same way i was feeling while watching it. Like it was a joke.
I have been waiting for this review. Dracula is my favorite book, play and Tod Browning's Dracula is my favorie movie and I love Nosferatu as well but I was not excited for this or in a rush to see the movie and won't until it's streaming for free but I have been excited to see what you thought since the Christmas stream. I am still hopefull it surprises me but I am not counting on it especially after hearing your opinion on it but I will form my own when it streams
I’ve never liked Eggers very much. His films leave me cold and distant. He knows how to make a movie look nice but misses the mark when trying to tell a compelling and engaging story. His films have no soul to me.
I loved this movie Justin. I loved how he made count Orlok like a real count would look in that time that's why he has the mustache. I thought it was brilliant and properly done. I love how creepy it is and how it was designed like a classic horror movie how they blend in to the scenes but I know how you feel with the movie and that's what I didn't like as well. Let me explain that the movie itself wasn't good but the visual effects were a masterpiece. Thank you and Jeremy for sharing your thoughts on Nosferatu. Hope you both had a great Christmas. Stay safe and blessed my friends take care ✌ and I love Jeremy's Count Orlok' impression I give it two 👍 👍 ❤
@@johnbest1978 I was going to say, Eggers said he wanted Orlock to look like a dead Transylvania Nobleman. You can also notice the mustache & hair design. If you look at the portrait of Vlad Tepes, you can see somewhat of what he was going for. Loved it.
I mean if we all saw the original and 79 films, So much you can do without going off the beating path, its a better looking, updated same film. Bill's count is more Menacing and Vicious tho.
I think your in the minority here man, although I appreciate your take on it. Most of the elements you touched on seemed to be the exact opposite of how I felt
Overall, I'd say I enjoyed it. It was definitely a visual treat. Lily Rose Depp was gorgeous and a pleasure to watch. Willem Dafoe for me could have been replaced with anyone, and that's not a knock against him, but that his role was just... Willem Dafoe, basically. I definitely thought it went on a bit too long, but I honestly feel that every modern Horror I've seen in the cinema has been way too long. I thought Bill did a great job as Orlock, and I thought it was a better film than Coppola's, but that's not hard because I think Coppola's is silly. 🦇🍻 I love Jeremy's verdict! 😂 I also agree with him on the Werner Herzog version, that's my favourite.
I heard somebody i know that seen itand they said its boring still will see it though i appreciate your review piz and you and Jeremy have a happy new year
Completely agree with you! This was one of my most anticipated films, but it ended up being such a letdown. The pacing was off, and by the halfway point, I found myself just waiting for it to end. It felt like it dragged on without delivering anything truly gripping or fresh. I was hoping for a bold, atmospheric retelling, but it didn’t live up to its potential. A real disappointment for a movie I was so excited about.
Shouldn't the movie put you into a particular mindset via atmosphere, suspense, a compelling narrative, and strong characters who you care about? I found all those things severely lacking here.
I liked the look of him & the movie. Cool. Way too long though. And too much FFC Bram Stoker's Dracula theatrics. I could've done without the lead actress starting in the first 15 mins - it's like she was overacting to the back of a play theater in every scene. The supporting players were solid though.
Great review, thought the vvittch was good but haven't been on the Eggers train at all since, personally his movies are trying to hard, gen z might not notice, but x and millinials had too much good stuff to compare his movies with to fall for the hype
I gotta agree with Piz on this one. I wanted to like it but it just seemed to go on forever and I didn't really care what happened to any of the characters by the end of it.
Coming back after a few days I think narrative wise, it’s his weakest film. Characters were not fleshed out enough for the version of the story he was trying to portray. I still liked it. But it’s my least favourite film of his. Style over substance comes to mind. I think Orlok in this version was by far the scariest of any version so far however. In terms of visuals I would put it right behind Herzogs
You cant beat the original Dracula… I definitely expected it to be way better it was very long and drawn out.. He did great with the voice but the makeup and look I wasn’t really a fan of.. He was not scary at all..
I loved it but for other reasons. I found my new favorite movie to put me right to sleep 😴 can someone please put a new spin, on the Dracula story. It's so outdated and boring. About 20 people in the theater I was at. I dosed off, and there were like 5 people left 😅

I don't know if I can make it through three hours. I'm betting most of the additional footage is just more of Depp making faces at the camera.
