Exactly! That's the point. He's not a bad defender but because he's the smallest guy on the court he's the obvious choice. Doesn't make him bad, but people always seem to get that confused. Pretty annoying.
And the reality is the Houston Rockets stopped attacking Curry in isolation because they realized it didn't help them much.

Honestly, if you just watch a Golden State game and observe Steph's activity on the defensive end and his defensive IQ compared to other elite guards like Harden, Westbrook or Dame, there's no way you can say he's a bad defender. That narrative just comes from people who don't watch games, or don't know what they're looking at when they do.
When you the short shooter and ur on a team with a 7-footer, defensive 3-pt shooters and a former dpoy, obv they gon try to switch ball-handlers on you

@ATL 1 Not only CP3 is a little bit shorter but he's more muscular.
Body type is more related to how much muscle or fat you can put in different parts of your body, there are guys that can put a lot of muscle on the back more than others or the chest, not everyone has the same body just look at AD vs Giannis even though both are basically same size or LJ and PG13

There was a really good old BBallBreakDown video on this topic, back in 2016 called Why Steph Curry Is An Elite Defender. Unfortunately, it's since been taken down for some reason. Anyways though, it was really informative, and broke down all stuff Steph does on defense that no one gives him credit for. He's never been the most physically gifted player out there, and naturally he is gonna get beat 1 on 1 by faster, more explosive players. But he offsets that by using his strong core and superior basketball IQ to his advantage. It's actually really fun to watch and appreciate when you break it down.

If Steph was more genetically gifted (more atlhetic, faster, longer wingspan, heavier, etc...) he would've been a top defender in the league.
He is extremely smart on defenes, and the only reason why he's still talked about as being an under average defender is because he isn't strong enough or fast enough to keep up with players of his caliber.

@Braeden Leonard how many players curry's size record a significant number of blocks or strips? aside from like patrick beverly and maybe cp3 i can't think of many players that are significant improvements over curry on the defensive end at his size. as a result, i dont think that it should be a knock against curry.

Totally agree. I've thought this since Westbrook scoffed at steph guarding him. For all of the match-up hunting teams do to find steph, it really doesn't seem to be worth it. I wouldn't be surprised if GS has secretly been totally fine with steph guarding guys like Harden but since they know that's what he's hunting they waste the shot clock to force him into one move and a shot. Unless you're lebron totally overpowering him, steph seems like a tough defender to seek out.

team defense is a thing guys, in many cases it's more important than individual on ball defense, esp. for superstars. You can't expect your no. 1 guy to take on the main defensive duties as well, except for special guys like Kawhi. In most cases you have your own defensively oriented guys for that.
They always compare Steph with the other stereo types "NBA SUPERSTARS" that's why they always come out in a different perspective.

You speaking big facts bro, I've always been saying this, Curry is not a bad defender at all especially in this Warriors system, he is really smart and knows his role on defensive end very well and always tend to make the right plays, he just gets attacked more because other guys on the team are much better defensively and also because he's smaller, but he's still a better defender than a lot of pgs like Dame, Kyrie, Kemba etc. Thanks for making this video man, great content. Half of defense is effort, and Steph definitely shows it. The lack of effort from Kyrie Irving, Russell Westbrook, James Harden, etc. are glaring and the reason they are terrible defenders.

I would say he locked up Westbrook in the 2016 conference finals but he more or less just played smart defense against Westbrook while Westbrook struggled in like one or two games in that series

These days people say they don't like Steph because of the 3-ball shimmy, but 5 years ago they said they didn't like him because he was too quiet.

i have been saying this for years. living in the chicago suburb area my entire life and vividly remembering ALL of bulls championships, i know a thing or 2 about D. curry hussles! and hussling can get u a lot of strips, blocks, rebs, and can negate in some ways being an average defender. not a lot of people talk about his rebounding either. i watch basically all the warriors games available to me on nba tv, tnt, etc. im sure when a timeout is called, Kerr, Green, or Thompson tell Curry he should have done this instead when on D but i dont believe they ever question his hussle there

If Steph is being labeled as such, then do the same to LBJ. Man I watched many plays of LeBron showing his defensive weaknesses and yet they are still talking about his greatness, even more, his being the best. Curry for me is a good defender, more so for his tiny size which shoud discourage critics to compare him to the likes of MJ, Kobe and Kawhi. Btw, you should've included Curry's defensive play during the G6 OKC vs GSW 2016 playoff where Curry displayed a couple of huge, crucial defensive stuff in the final moments, especially the steal!

Surprised you didn't include any clips of all those times Steph got switched onto LeBron in the finals and didn't get scored on.
Not getting scored on and playing good d are two very different things. Whenever Steph switched onto Lebron, the stagnancy of the cavs offense allowed the other 4 Warriors to close the driving gaps and clog up the paint. Bc of this lebron either gave the ball up or blew by curry and kicked the ball to an open player. Lebron also scored a lot on this too.

Steph is the prime example of making do with what you got. He just isn't strong, fast or athletic enough to lock down the opposing player. He isn't a lock down defender by any means...but time & time again we see that Steph does try and engages himself on the defensive end. People acting like the NBA is full of lock down defenders to begin with lol...there only a handful of players like that for a reason...
Any real ball player knows Steph can play defense, but the team run almost everything through him offensively which teams try and make him tired for that purpose alone on defense. Steph movement without the ball cause confusion for other teams on the defensive end.

Steph's defense is greatly underrated. Now while he may not be the next Gary Payton and may not be the best one on one defender he is good at team defense. He is kind of a pest on defense. The warriors as a whole are a great team defensively

But I would stay away from DBPM Curry from 15’-17’ had the same DBPM as Gary Payton during 95’-97’ and you are not telling me that Curry is just as good of a defender as Gary Payton. Steph sets screens and moves without the ball while creating open looks for his teammates, and he's also unselfish and can change his game. So he does all of the little things, and what he's asked to do at an elite level. Hes made the most out of his small frame and people hate that. He wasn't suppose to be this great! He proved a lot of doubters wrong.

He’s not a good defender, but he’s not a bad defender too. He has great positioning and effort. He has a pretty good defensive mindset. He’s an ok isolation defender. Just because he can’t guard Lebron and Harden doesn’t mean he’s a bad defender.
I'm a warriors fan, and even I have always thought that Steph is a bad individual defender. But I realize now he isn't particularly bad, he's just average. He's surrounded by elite defenders which makes him the weakest on the team, but if he were on almost any other team he probably wouldn't be considered bad at all, especially considering how good he is at picking off passes.

The only way you could say he's bad is comparatively since Klay KD Draymond and Iggy are all elite or excellent defenders. In reality Steph is an above avg defender which is amazing considering his size and avg athleticism.
U can’t say “considering his size and athleticism.” His lack of size and explosiveness make him a bad defender. That’s like saying a slower sprinter is good “considering his speed.”

And your metaphor was terrible, sprinting is almost entirely dependent on speed while being a good defender is far more about effort and IQ which having those in spades has allowed Curry to be good defender.
