  • If you're looking for a fun, energetic rainbowfish that won't get too big, you have to try forktail rainbowfish (Pseudomugil furcatus). This 2-inch (5 cm) peaceful species has stunning blue eyes and yellow fins that look like little pom-poms when they swim and dance around each other.

    I put 18 of them in my 50 gallon tank with a pair of apistos and some bushy nose blue-eyed plecos. They were super skittish and shy at first, always swimming away from me, but now that they know "I have the food" they don't mind putting on a show when I'm in the room and staring through the glass. We Don't have any babies yet but I totally love these guys!

    I love these fish. I have had some for over a year and a bit and have been breeding them in a spare tank. They don’t live for a long time, but they are very energetic. I also recommend keeping females with the males, as they need to girls to show off to.

    • @cattfishing
      @cattfishing 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, she said they tend to color up more having multiple females around. Do you notice any difference in how they color up when having more or less females around?

    • @brianmarshall1762
      @brianmarshall1762 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@cattfishing hi Kat. I’ve only kept them together. The males will spar (Flash) with each other if the girls are around. I’ve seen them in the shops and they don’t have a great colour, but on my dark substrate, they both colour up nicely. When the big males flash to each other, they’re ridiculously gorgeous. I feed mine Hikari micro pellets, and I think that helps them too.

    Great fish.
    They don't like nitrates, if the water is not clean enough, they will easily start to "bend".
    As you said, they don't live long, and they tend to be less fertile quite soon, 1 year is already a bit late to have a good spawn.

    how similar are they too the gertrude’s spotted blue eye rainbowfish

    • @TarasTankFriends
      @TarasTankFriends 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very similar care. Only real difference is temperature preference, gertrudae like about 76°max, otherwise it will speed up their metabolism and shorten their lifespan. I learned that the hard way unfortunately. Conversely, Furcatus will do well up to 80°f.

  • @ariels6055
    @ariels6055 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Would the Pseudomugil luminatus be about the same care?

    • @TarasTankFriends
      @TarasTankFriends 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Basically yes, although luminatus like the ph to top out at about 7.5, while furcatus will take it up to 8.0. Luminatus also do best and live longer at a bit lower temperature than the furcatus, I keep my luminatus at 74-76°f max.

    So when i get settled in my new place in April, I'm starting a 32g furcata species only tank...kinda hoping to breed. I know sand/pebbles is a good natural substrate. It's going to be fully planted with some larger stones and forest blackwood. Are there any more suggestions about setting up the tank for them? I'm in Florida and my praecox rainbows in my 55g love the hard water, so no worries there. It's going to be a fluval flex 32g most likely...I know they're expensive but I have the 15g and it's been a great little tank. Anyway I'd appreciate any more tips from anyone. Thus will be my first breeding attempt besides guppies...thank you

    Correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t these particular species of rainbow fish brackish? I’m pretty sure some of them are but I don’t know which ones are. I’ve been trying to find them.

    • @TarasTankFriends
      @TarasTankFriends 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some pseudomugils are indeed brackish. The pseudomugil cyanodorsalis is brackish to almost full salt. Some people who have very soft water have success keeping luminatus in brackish, too, but as for the furcatus they're a freshwater fish as far as I know.

      Also , can I use almond leaves , I have a hard water dark water tank as well with an Oscar... I like the tannins. And it's benefits to fish health. Am I ok doing this?? Thank you for your help.

    • @TarasTankFriends
      @TarasTankFriends 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For dwarf neon rainbow, I'm assuming you're referring to pseudomugil luminatus, those would be fine just make sure the furcatus aren't out competing them for food. If you're meaning m. Praecox, I have no idea, lol. I would NOT keep them with an Oscar-- the furcatus would likely be expensive lunch for it, or they'd annoy the Oscar at the very least.
      You sure can introduce almond leaves to a furcatus tank, even alder cones, but slowly is best as they don't really like sudden ph changes and do like a ph around 7-8, and some hardness to the water.
