    Q&A
    Any particular cloth?
I use small cloths called cheeky wipes, for babies bottoms!! But they are similar to a microfibre cloth to wipe my hands, here's a video about it: • How To Make Your Own W...
Do you number your pastels after breaking them how do you know which colour you have?
I make a colour chart but remember to always match your colours using the same colour paper or you will be confused.
How do I know the color on new Unison box of 120 half sticks?
there is a colour chart on the reverse of the sleeve I believe.
Once you’ve broken a stick and are using just a little piece, and you put it with other unlabeled little pieces, how can you ever tell which color to reorder when it runs out?
Use your colour chart but remember to use the same colour paper to compare the colours.
Which kinds of pastel paper can you use water and alcohol on?
Generally, anything that is coated like Pastelmat, Uart, Fisher 400 or Wet & Dry paper but definitely not Velour or Sennelier Soft Pastel Card. If you are unsure test a piece first. Always make sure your paper is dry before you rework it with more pastel.
How do you create sharp edges without snapping the pastel?
Rub the end on 100 or 80 grit sand paper.
How easy is it to clean the tortillon?
To clean a blending stump or tortillion, rub the tip of it with a kneaded eraser until it is clean again. You can also use sandpaper, which will both clean it and sharpen the tip but only pull in one direction across the sandpaper so you don't unravel the tortillon.
How do you store paintings so they don't smudge?
This is how i store mine: • How To Store Your Past...
What hard pastel brand are you using?
Faber Castell. I only use the black and the white.
I couldn't find a white pastel on the Unison chart on Jackson's web page, am I just not looking hard enough??
Its not called white its grey 28 or light 1
I thought you had to work from dark to light?
You don't have to, think of it more like a guideline than an out right rule. Go with what works, experiment.
How many layers can one get on pastelmat?
It depends how thickly you apply the pastel. You can get many, many layers of thin pastel or just a few layers of thick pastel.
Seems like every 'rule' can be broken...
Absolutely, this is how new techniques are discovered and also how you create your own unique style.
Can anyone recommend good pastel pencils?
Here's an article I wrote about pastel pencils: skhportraits.c...
What magnets board is that please?
It's a piece of MDF from the hardware store with a self adhesive magnetic sheet stuck on top. I use extra strong fridge magnets from Amazon. Some artists use a metal white board but this limits you to a specific sizes.

Thank you so much Sue for an action packed session. There are quite a few hints you mentioned that I am keen to try. It was very freeing to hear that there isn't one right way to paint in pastels.

I'm a beginner pastelist. You have given some great tips here! I especially like the one about using a tourtillon to apply pastels and also to shade. I never would have thought of that! And not being afraid to get my face closer to the painting to see where I'm putting down the marks. Thank you for sharing!

Please, let me know the name of a true red. Not an orangy red but a true red! Im trying to decide but watching at the colors online aint easy. I have in my cart the Red 1 and the Additional 15... but I dont know which one to add to my order! Don't even know if one of those two is actually a true red, or if is a different one what I need! Im looking for a true red, like fire truck red!
