This was one of the most incredible experiences I've had in my life. I felt as if it was just me and the band there in the concert hall, but I could still feel this massive presence from everyone else who was there. We were all enraptured by the intensity and raw emotion on display.
I saw him in Louisville back in November, and honestly same. It was one of the most surreal and incredible experiences I've had and I'd go back over and over if I could. At our show, they did their encore all acoustic...... and then covered Hotline Bling by Drake.
Saw him in Montreal last april. It was pure magic. No one was talking or applauding for at least 45 minutes. It felt like we were listening to the music as a whole, not 3000 individuals
Absolutely beautiful and totally extraordinary... I've experienced hundreds of live gigs in my life from 1969 until 2007... And quite honestly there is very little to touch this - Lance your recording is utterly brilliant.... Thankyou so much.
He made a fantastic album ethereal and I'm beside myself now (chills+some trembling). I held off Sufjan off for ten long years afraid that the quirky hipsterism would ruin the music. It's bittersweet to have waited for this long, inversely, it was completely rewarding that he turned out to be a gem of musician in every sense of the word - a low key Prince, if you will. I thank you very much for this upload.
Dude thank you so much for this!!! I have been yearning so much for this concert to become available somewhere.. it took 'Carrie and Lowell' to another universe!
Thank you so much for posting this. My love and I are from Oregon, and we were there that night--in Australia on an ultimately arduous and lonely year as work-holiday backpackers. Seeing Sufjan perform songs about our home against a backdrop of familiar landscapes alleviated all the stress of being broke and homeless in an unforgiving foreign country. We grinned, we cried, and we felt immense joy at the acoustics of the Sydney Opera House exemplifying the beauty of Sufjan's music. This audio didn't disappoint. Again, thanks, and cheers~
Thanks for posting this! Just saw Sufjan and crew at Folks Fest in Colorado and they blew me away. Voice, lyrics, style...all beautiful and haunting! Wonder about his influences. His orchestrations hint of Moody Blues, Rick Wakeman, and Gary Numan. In any case, Sufjan's a new favorite!
dinofrangiamore Come to think of it, perhaps there's more Gary Wright in there than Gary Numan. Any Sufjan/music experts out there to shed more light on this?
Thanks Lance. I seen him in San Diego and he opened with Redford (for yia yia and papou) and into death and dignity. I felt like a pressure relief valve lifting during Death and Dignity. A short cry and then I smiled the rest of the show. This album helped me cope with the end of a common law relationship I had so I was in fact grieving myself.

+Telecaster Magician My brother and I were there for this show, and the Opera House were allowing people to take their wine into the theatre for the performance, as it was the only drink available in some sort of solid plastic cup. No intermission meant that people were sitting their empty glasses at their feet, so whenever somebody shifted a bit there was bound to be a glass going over. One of the glasses you hear was mine, but in the moment nothing could break the immersion.
+BringMirSuppe Ahh yes. There was Redford and unfortunately, by memory, I forgot to double tap the record button as I hadn't used the H4n for a while! Missed that first track.
+live audio Yep internal XY mics.I did however then spent a bit of time (hours really!) mastering it in Audition to bring the treble out against the bass, among other tweaks like gentle compression. The raw file was rather muddy in comparison to this mastered version, and the dynamic range was really dramatic to the extent that you'd be constantly turning your stereo up/down if you wanted to hear the subtleties. I really tried my best to lift the quiet parts and balance them with the super loud parts so that you could hear it at a consistently pleasing level. I think that I got close (I hope), but it was really hard to pull back those epic sections without going overboard and taking away.
+Lance Clayton It does also help substantially that the Sydney Opera House sounds absolutely incredible (at least every show that I've ever seen there!)

The owl and the tanager is stunning stuff
Dude thank you so much for this!!! I have been yearning so much for this concert to become available somewhere.. it took 'Carrie and Lowell' to another universe!
+Jarrad Spring No problem. I've enjoyed tonnes of live shows from others over the years so it was a pleasure to record this and pay it forward. Enjoy.
totally agree about Carrie and Lowell part since I've been listening to it for days now :D it's like heaven :')

+dinofrangiamore I believe one of his influences in Bob Dylan, Lowell Brams would show it to him.
+dinofrangiamore I hear Elliott Smith constantly in Sufjan's work, but especially Carrie and Lowell.
The gift of your music makes my life better :)
I would love a Carrie and Lowell album with this instrumentation
Spending the holiday listening to the angelic voice of Sufjan.... thank you!
Thats a quality recording, you and the H4n did a good job!

very nice recording, but why did you skip the InTRO track "Redford"?
+BringMirSuppe Ahh yes. There was Redford and unfortunately, by memory, I forgot to double tap the record button as I hadn't used the H4n for a while! Missed that first track.
hi im new sufjan fan, i really want to download this, but unfortunately the link expired. is there another link? thank you
amazing... (this may be my 50th listen). I love it... but they need to ban those cups in the house... so annoying. i cringe every time.
Is there some unoffical cover for this bootleg? Please share.
was this done with the internal mics ? impressive !
