  • While reviving an early 80's Toro Groundsmaster 52, Matt tasked himself with a cleanup and rebuild of the large model Flo Jet carburetor of the Briggs and Stratton 16hp cast iron. With no spare parts or overhaul kit on hand, this repair ended up being a free one.
The challenges were numerous... well, not really, just a really stubborn seized pilot jet.
If you want to get your hands a little dirty and get your old engine back up and running on the cheap, this video is for you!

I have a 1972 Sears Surbuban 15 with a 15hp Briggs and after watching this video I am going to clean mine. It sat for 15 years and only runs with full choke and has no power

Definitely with the symptoms you are describing a good cleaning will help!

@@mattsws The issue I have is it looks like I have a Walbro fuel pump attached to the fuel inlet side on the carb. I looked it up and it is a Walbro 3008 with the numbers 2806 under the 3008. I cant find anything like it because it is a Aluminum box about the size of a matchstick box. I kinda wanted to rebuild it while I have it off

Nice video. I am currently playing with an 8HP B&S 170402 model snowblower engine (1967 mfg). No air filter of course. Your video is one of the better ones. I have replaced some parts and cleaned the carb pretty good but am having starting problems. I'll have to work around the adjustments to the jets. It does have spark as it fires up for a few seconds with starter fluid .It did work when I picked it up a few weeks ago. Does have good compression and did seem to sound good when I picked it up. I really have no use for it right now but as a hobby I would like to see it run.

I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed the video. Those are fun engines, especially the older ones like yours! If the carb was fully disassembled and cleaned and it has fresh gas, even rough carb settings will get it to run. Then its just a question of tuning it in by ear. Assuming compression and spark is good. Hope you get it going. Let me know how it works out! Thanks again for the nice comment!

Nice video. I have one on an old generator that I want to revive. I have no history on the generator but it looks good, no rust in the tank at all.
When I complete repairing the start rope today I'll see what it does before I attack the carb.

Good to hear! It always impresses me that you can revive an old briggs with some basic hand tools and a couple hours of patience! Thanks for watching!!

@@mattsws ::: Well today, 18 July 22, I replaced the white disk that hold the rope and rewinded the starter springs. Apparently the other disk got stuck and melted out the center.
After reattaching the cover I checked the oil then sprayed some carb cleaner down the throat and it started on the very first pull. I then put about a quart of gas in it and it started on the next pull as well and it makes power.
Since it is running so well, I am not going to touch the carb but I am going to replace the fuel line, filter, oil, and the burnt out muffler.
I guess that clean gas tank was a sign that no gas was left in the tank.

@@Hear-MeoutTwo2 No gas in the tank probably also meant no gas in the carb. That's what saved you the trouble of cleaning it out. With today's ethanol gas, you are lucky if it doesn't gunk up before the next season! Glad to hear it runs so well!

Great job on the Vacu-jet carb. Gotta do this on two machines. Ugh!
