Honestly, one of my favourite standalone anime episodes of all time. Certainly one of the most shocking. The actors killed it across the board, Kobayashi Yuusuke (Subaru), Minase Inori (Rem), and Matsuoka Yoshitsugu (Betelguese, you might also recognise him from numerous other shows tbh, Demon Slayer and JJK, amongst others) all with 10/10 performances. As introductions of villains go, Betelguese's introduction is incredible, he's absolutely terrifying. And the OST, throughout the whole show tbh, Re:Zero's OST is one of my favourites in general, but this episode has some of the most iconic tracks out of the whole show.
This anime truly is a master class of emotional manipulation and I mean that in the best way possible. When I first watched Re:Zero I thought of myself as a jaded anime veteran, I thought I'd seen and felt it all and nothing could pierce my thick, calloused emotional armor. But... this episode broke me. It'd been years since I teared up at an anime. If you're a weeb, this series truly is one of the best works of fiction in the past decade.
Puck didn't lop off his head. He was just frozen and his neck cracked from the weight of his head. It was just like how in the last cycle, he was flash-frozen in the underground room, his fingers were so fragile they stuck to the doorknob and just snapped off when he reflexively jerked his hand back. And then his head just fractured under the strain all on its own. Here, he just got frozen and that meant he's going to start breaking apart because he's so brittle, starting with the parts under the most stress. And his neck was the first point of failure.

It's the opposite, cuz he blame everything on himself and when you look at how heavy the burden is he then try to cope by telling that this is not his fault which is TRUE but in his heart he will never forget and forgive himself for this. It's contradiction on it own which show us how fuck Subaru head was that he went 360 into the same thing but different condition, by denying his responsible not from fear of burden and mistake he made but from the self loathing that trick him into thinking it all his fault and he deserve it.

I understand Subaru not wanting to deal with things anymore, but to pretend to broken, and then to be called out by Petelguese. And now he’s got a murderous glint in his eye. That won’t go well. Honestly, Subaru is at his best when he drops his pride. That’s when his intelligence and cleverness truly shine through. But he’s not ready and he’ll make us suffer along with him until he figures it out.
An important distinction to make: He wasn't pretending, at least not fully. When he snapped back from his past death, he truly did experience a mind break. But at some point during the carriage ride you see him wake up and look at Rem- this is him "waking up", but choosing to pretend to be just as mentally distraught. Suffice it to say, when Petelgeuse calls him out he's certainly not in a _good_ mental state, but at that point, his mind is no longer broken, he's just pretending to be insane for, ironically, his own sanity.
@@animagamer2 I don't remember in volume 6 Subaru ever showing he was "faking". This world has 3 magic systems. Elemental magic, divine blessings and witches blessings. Petelgeuse and Subaru have witch blessings Emilia, Puck, Rem, Ram, Roswaal, Subaru, etc have elemental magic. Control of the 6 elements, but most people only know one element. Divine blessings are as the name suggests "blessings from the world". Reinhard is the best example of a character with the most divine blessings.
Authorities aren’t exactly “witch blessings” they are personal manifestations of a witch factor. They are not given to people from the witches in an act of blessing…

the director; Hiroyuki Tsuchiya, need some recognition what we are seeing is pretty much what the directors vision of the source material, oh boy his team fucking deliver it, the whole team must have been a big fan too and that music at the end; "Requiem of Silent" is just soo good, as subaru walks the music builds up, more instrument kicks in, it really builds up the trauma this episode hit like an asteroid.
Its amazing and interesting how you guys explain that your mind is confused whether to grieve or not. You see the characters get mutilated and killed then moments later on they're alive. Its the perfect answer to people that hate on subaru by saying "Stop being such a wuss subaru you can restart everything!".
they put so much work in this episode that they had to put a special ending song, requiem of silence (that is the best piece of ost of the anime) and roll the credits like if it was a movie. Best anime episode i've ever watched.
As a Japanese, the only complaint I have with this episode is that it translates "Daisuki" into "Love you". Suki and Aishiteru have different word weights. From a Japanese point of view, Rem does not say "love you" in this episode yet., and that's why it was so moving in the future. Therefore probably it would have been better to "like you so much" I think.
The credits scene was really poetic. The credits only start to roll once Subaru's head falls off and then throughout the credits nothing really happens. You're just left there to watch as more and more snow fills the screen. You only get that minute of credits to grieve the death of your favorite characters before you're returned from death.
@@dewaabiyyu761 you could say that but it’s actually damages Subaru. It’s not healthy. It’s an obsession. Remember all the failed loops in arc 3. What hurt Subaru the most was always seeing Rem sacrificing her life for Subaru. Seeing her die over and over again actually broke Subaru.

I remember watching this episode by myself for the first time. The shock that it left me with had me unable to do anything useful for the rest of the day. I was just completely empty inside and didn't even know what to thing. This episode is still with me to this day as something I can't forget. Truly a masterpiece
I don't remember, is the next episode From Zero? The legendary chapter
Pretty sure your thinking about episode 18
This episode had me shell shocked for awhile after watching
Phenomenal voice acting this episode. Made my brain... tremble.
hell yeah I was waiting for this!
One of the best episodes ever made in anime industry
I really want these guys to watch Echidnuts rezero what if videos after season 2. Even if its just in their own time
Manly tears were shed, and this ain't even his worst way to die, yet.
One of the best episodes for suuuure
Oh yeah, we're there! Another one of my top four endings of all time! Coincidentally, we just got the one from Steins;Gate episode 20, also in my top four. For the curious, the remaining two are Steins;Gate episode 9 and Overlord 3x9.
This world has 3 magic systems. Elemental magic, divine blessings and witches blessings.
Petelgeuse and Subaru have witch blessings
Emilia, Puck, Rem, Ram, Roswaal, Subaru, etc have elemental magic.
Emilia is a spirit arts user she uses the mana from the atmosphere not from her body.
@@lehyplay6961 Ok, I forgot
Ohhhh boy, welcome to Re:Zero
Re:Zero will feature some great villains in the future, but none of them are more obnoxious than Betelgeuse, in my opinion.
The Bunnies 💀💀💀
@@gabrielbraga7670 They're good, but I see them more as a force of nature. It's pure instinct, there's almost no intention in their actions, so I don't hate them that much.
nah hes a fun villain
Regulus corneas
I have been waiting for this episode to be reacted!
They will watch SG ep 21, 22 and soon they gonna watch last two episodes of Made in Abyss (all of them heartwrenching) Hopefully Anna and Ben won't get clinical depression.
The rag-doll thing isn't even the worst death. I hope you like pets.
It was in the anime cut that Subaru ate himself because he saw the eyes of a certain witch.
@@Angelo.6945 But it's not in the anime and not in the light novel, It was only on the Web novel
Clicked Faster than satella reaching for subaru's heart.Brain trembling reaction & discussions.
Few tidbits:-
- REM uses Huma(water magic) which is fluid magic,so if you see carefully when rem uses EL huma 2 launch 2 crystals, she uses the blood(Can see it animated) of cultist she punched through.Later on when she frees subaru, again its animated shes uses the blood on subaru's hand to break free chains.
- 5:25 Very interesting parallel here,Just like subaru is a special person to rem, Emilia is special person(ep 13) to subaru. while Subaru can understand where rem might come from, its much harder for emilia since doesn't have memories of that loop.
- Betelgeuse VA is same as kirito/Inosuke BTW lol.
the director; Hiroyuki Tsuchiya, need some recognition
what we are seeing is pretty much what the directors vision of the source material,
oh boy his team fucking deliver it, the whole team must have been a big fan too
and that music at the end; "Requiem of Silent" is just soo good, as subaru walks the music builds up, more instrument kicks in, it really builds up the trauma
this episode hit like an asteroid.
13:57 Remember when Pak said to Subaru that she gonna destroy the world if Emilia dies? Well... that thing was Pak.
the Requiem of Silence at the end tho 😔
My brain trembles when I see new stuff from you guys
oh heck yeah i was waiting for this
15:02
The voice of a broken man.
Its amazing and interesting how you guys explain that your mind is confused whether to grieve or not. You see the characters get mutilated and killed then moments later on they're alive. Its the perfect answer to people that hate on subaru by saying "Stop being such a wuss subaru you can restart everything!".
One of the best episode ever in anime history all the voice actors,BM,story everything is just perfect in this episode 🔥
Betelgeuse is what you get after taking "the" out of "Psychotherapist"
they put so much work in this episode that they had to put a special ending song, requiem of silence (that is the best piece of ost of the anime) and roll the credits like if it was a movie.
I like you so much in this context sounds out of place in english tho, it would take the viewer out of the experience
13:55 finally someone got it
Truly a mad episode
I've been waiting for this episode all week
Betelgeuse was the first time of me realizing how amazing Voice actors can be in anime.
Ben at the start: "I'm hopeful"
The episode in question:
I'm convinced the Duffer brothers took inspiration from this episode for their season 4 of Stranger Things
The credits scene was really poetic. The credits only start to roll once Subaru's head falls off and then throughout the credits nothing really happens. You're just left there to watch as more and more snow fills the screen. You only get that minute of credits to grieve the death of your favorite characters before you're returned from death.
That level of self sacrifice is why Rem is the best waifu
Rem’s self sacrificial tendencies are actually very toxic trait of her character…
@@deepdawn1284its literally her reason to live and die, one of the reason shes best girl
@@dewaabiyyu761 you could say that but it’s actually damages Subaru. It’s not healthy. It’s an obsession. Remember all the failed loops in arc 3. What hurt Subaru the most was always seeing Rem sacrificing her life for Subaru. Seeing her die over and over again actually broke Subaru.
by the way, the voice actor of betelguese is the same as Kirito from Sword are online lool
My Brain is Tremble 😱
i remember when I saw this ..the pain ..
