    Handles also have "grinds." Contoured, smooth, blocky/squared off, rounded, finger grooves, pinch points, etc.

    A lot of medieval daggers are named after the shape of their handles and guards. For instance, the roundel dagger (has round disk guards) and the bollocks dagger (I'll let you guess what it's shaped like...).

    If you do strip off the coating under the handle scales you can simply apply frog lube and then put your scales back on, or get yourself a can of top coat and spray it over the handle area and then put your scales back on

    1) Love to see traditionals getting some air time. So much knife heritage still influencing modern blades. 2) I've also had good success stripping painted/coated blades with gel paint stripper. Fully cover for at least 30 mins then scrape. May take more than one go. Remember to fully rinse when done as paint stripper does bad stuff on some surfaces (esp. handles & sheaths). A few unwanted drops can ruin your handles real quick. 3) My goto sheepsfoot bag opener is the Spyderco Rescue - ergos may not suit extended use - but worth a look. Sharp blades all.

    I've used, carried, and recommended other Moras for hiking and camping, but the Kansbol is the king of lightweight backpacking fixed blades. The versatility, utility, packability, carryability, comfortability (apparently that's a word now), and easy-on-the-wallet-ility (why not?) are all off the charts.

    The coffin handle was the very first thing that came to my mind when I heard the first question. I wonder if there are more folders or fixed blades with "named handles"...?

  • @jorgamund07
    @jorgamund07 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    5:20 Another handle shape is on a Doctor's Knife. Rectangular with a slight flare on one end, squared off so a doctor could crush a pill. It's notable for being a handle shape with a functional purpose other than just ergonomics.
    Case used to have a good line of doctor's knives, but I think it's discontinued. I see Buck versions on KC, haven't used them but they look similar.

    • @wesleysobik9137
      @wesleysobik9137 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Then there's also a doctors knife like the ones that have a finger hold to choke up on for even more precision. They were largely used before scalpels were widely available, very nice knives too

  • @Deibodese
    @Deibodese ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The funny thing about modern knives is that the whole game in the industry today is to create unique-looking products, which more often than not translates to unique handle shapes. So coming up with names for modern knife handles would be next to impossible, unless you just referred to the handle shape by the model name (Para 3, Bugout, ESEE 4, etc.).

    You’re totally right DCA about electric sharpeners I ruined a couple of cheap folders on the Ken onion system but it’s a learning curve, take things nice and slow too you don’t wanna ruin the temper of any steel but it’s a fantastic system for repairing tips just keep water on standby to keep it cool and it’ll be fine. For beginners in sharpening too I would go with a manual benchstone, spyderco sharp maker or any clamp system lansky or the precision adjust from work sharp would work wonders

  • @jolness1
    @jolness1 ปีที่แล้ว

    I learned to sharpen on a KO WS with the blade grinder but I did so on kitchen knives for friends, family and even restaurants where I did kitchen equipment service in my previous life. I sharpened a thousand knives before I felt truly comfortable. Now I’ve done 3000+ and I’ll sharpen anything without concern and then knock off the microburr on a diamond paste strop.
    Totally agree people should learn to raise and feel the burr etc on a manual system (I tend to recommend the precision adjust, I’ve used one and it’s a great kit for the money, puts an edge that’s plenty good enough unless you want something super polished for certain types of cutting. Doesn’t feel
    super premium but for the money… it’d a good value). I’m glad I use a belt system, much simpler and I can do it while removing the absolute minimum material but much harder than a guided system (especially the side where you hold with your non-dominant hand)

    There may be many more iconic- named-knives that have come to be associated with specific handle shapes/styles in part, but also including their multiple-blade configurations, and blade shapes. The first thing the leaped into my mind was the so-called "Boy Scout Jack-Knife." I'm willing to bet that was the very first pocket knife ever owned my many of your oldest viewers. However there are many variations of those as well. In my own case, I owned a "Lone Ranger" knife even before that, which was the first knife I cut my own finger with, just days after I first got it, and against my mother's permission. "Lessons Learned" should be a separate iconic knife category of it's own!

    Knife Steel Nerds did a comprehensive study on knives sharpened on various types of belts including the Work Sharp. Without exception every blade that was dry ground did not cut in the CATRA test as many cards as it did hand or wet sharpened, no exceptions. Knife edges are easily overheated during powered grinding due to the small volume of the edge and the friction buildup from grinding. This softens the edge and worsens edge retention and unless you use like I do a water cooled belt or hand sharpen, your edge will be re-tempered even if it's only one or two thousandths of an inch deep.
    There were no exceptions except M4 which is a hot hardness steel used in machine cutting bits at red hot temperatures.
    I use my 1x42 belt grinder with silicon oxide belts and a fine mist of water to sharpen knives. I finish them by hand, but in the shape I get some knives to sharpen I'm not spending 30 minutes getting an edge on a knife that hadn't been sharpened in years, I'm wet grinding them to 600 grit then a quick finish by hand and I'm done. Unless you carve wood or cut leather you most likely only need a 600 to 800 grit "butcher's edge" finish.

I have been looking into potential Knifes/Machetes to pick up for a survival situation. would you recommend any in particular? im hoping to carry a separate knife so a longer machete would be perfectly fine. 2. would you recommend either of cold steel's bowie machetes as a main servival implement and if so which would you prefer? 3. and would you recommend the cold steel Dropped Forged Bowie for a survival/bushcraft scenario or would the Dropped Forged Survivalist be a better option?

    Is forming a burr during sharpening critical - or is it just the most practical way to know you've sharpened all the way to the edge?
    I.e. if, instead of sharpening on one side until you form a burr, you alternated sides for every stroke and... used a microscope or something to make sure you reached the edge - would the resulting edge be just as sharp? I basically want to know if the burr is doing something or if it's just an indicator of when it's time to switch sides.

Also, how do I know what the grind is of for example the Kershaw 1660? I can't find that info anywhere.

    Hey there, DCA & gang. In an effort to thumb my nose at the disposable razor companies, I took up straight razor shaving a few years ago. Weighing my options at the time, I decided to go with a restored vintage blade and it's been a rewarding venture. It now feels like time to upgrade and I'm considering a brand new blade; can you please show off some recommendable KC straights? I'm curious to compare what I know about vintage steel versus more contemporary innovations. Thanks!

      Good luck with that. I tried a straight razor one time, and made myself so nervous that I never tried it again,and I’m fearless.

      I have a strait from around the end of ww2 that has shaven the faces of my grandfather,dad and myself. I haven't found any modern razors that can stand up to it.

    So call me crazy but I actually carry my 4max scout. It fits my giant banana hands but not every knife task appropriately. What would you pair with T-Rex skinner?

    Question for yall. I have been looking for a modern slip joint, preferably titanium or another metal scales, but if not that's not too important.
    Some that interested me were the benchmade proper and the jack knives line. Looking for something 2"-4", and

      Maybe the ANV (Acta Non Verba) Z050. It has anodised aluminium scales and really cool super deep carry wire pocket clip. Very retro-futuristic design, made in the Czech Republic. KnifeCenter has them for about $87-95 depending on blade finish/steel. For titanium, Lionsteel also has titanium handles for the CK01 family called the Slim variant. Perhaps a bit above your budget though. If you're ok with non metal handles, perhaps Cold Steel Lucky. Carbon fibre scales and CPM S35VN blades (one plain, one serrated) and a pocket clip, and made in Italy. Costs about $60-75.I absolutely love mine.
