      I've never dyed soap, but I'm sure you can find a recipe on how to use natural colors in your studio. Best of luck!

    Wish I'd seen this earlier! I do a bit of simple dying to keep clothing going for my kids, make inexpensive white t-shirts more interesting, etc., but often have trouble with fading and sometimes a bit of bleeding. I feel like between pomegranates and soy milk, I may have simple, less toxic way to make the colors stay.

      So happy you found the video, Esther 💚 Prepping your textile with a mordant is truly the best option you have to help improve the bond with natural color. Also choosing dye matter that has natural tannins will help with longer lasting color, so keep that in mind when selecting your plant materials. I like to celebrate how natural color is living & breathing, and therefore changing, but following these practices should bring you more smiles in your dye pot - happy dyeing!

    I just mordanted some t shirts with soy milk. I saw that dyeing with pomegranate rind makes a darker color when dyed with cotton mordanted with soy milk, so I am planning to do this. But am I right about this? Would there be any extra precautions to take? Also, I wonder what other natural dyes do well with the soy mordanted cotton.

      Great questions, Jane 🌼 Soy milk as a binder is a great option for cellulose fibers like cotton if you do not have tannin or alum as mainstay mordants in your studio. Although I have found color results to be lighter with soy milk, using high tannin dye matter like pomegranate is a great option for deeper colors. Pomegranate is used as a tannin mordant, so you get the double binding power of both. I suggest you stick with other easily sourced high tannin dyes like onion skins, avocado skins/pits, black tea, etc to play around with the process. One very important tip is to always make sure your fibers are well washed and wet when you do any dyeing as this helps with the best color uptake. Have fun!

      @@MargaretByrdColorQuest Thanks for your reply.
      So when I get ready to dye my t shirts, I simmer them in the pomegranate skin dye for an hour; then let them stand in the dye bath overnight. I have another question: I am planning to tie dye a couple. Are there any precautions I should take with the tie dyed shirts, or is it okay to let them sit in the dye bath that long? There won't be too much of a chance of the dye bleeding into the tied areas?

    • @MargaretByrdColorQuest
      @MargaretByrdColorQuest  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@janesawyer1342 Yes - heat is an important part of the process in natural dyeing to encourage color from the dye matter and help in adhering to the fiber. Time is also a great way to deepen the color, so I often let my fibers sit in the dye bath as it cools and often overnight. You will not hurt the fiber doing this - you can pull it out when you are satisfied with the color. Remember though, wet fiber will look darker and will lighten when it dries.
      You will want to make sure your tie dye is binded very tightly and/or there are a lot of fiber folds to keep areas 'protected' from dye seeping into the tied area. It is always possible you will have some seepage since the fibers will be wet, but this also gives a lovely gradient effect. You could skip the step of wetting out your fiber before/after binding it which is typically recommended for better dye uptake, but might minimize the wicking effect. My best advice is to experiment and be open to any result you may get as a wonderful gift of color from nature 😊

      I did go ahead and tie dyed a couple of tee shirts. I am pleased with the main color, but yes the tied parts are a little washed out. I am going to see if I can make them look better by bleaching the tied areas with bleach and a q tip.

    Can I dye washed denim textile with this dye? What types of modent should I use then?

    • @MargaretByrdColorQuest
      @MargaretByrdColorQuest  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your denim is made from cotton and/or limited in synthetic fibers, you can certainly dye them with pomegranate skins. Make sure your textile is washed well in pH neutral soap before you dye to remove any protective coating that may be there, and always wet your fabric before putting it into the dye pot. Pomegranate skins are high in tannin which is a natural mordant, so you don't need to use anything else. Best of luck!

    Can i dye cotton/wool yarn with these natural dyes??

    • @MargaretByrdColorQuest
      @MargaretByrdColorQuest  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HI Prajakta - yes, you can dye any type of fiber with natural dyes including yarn. It is best to use 100% natural cotton/wool for best results, wash/scour and wet before dyeing and use a mordant to strengthen the bond between fiber and dye. I have dyed many skeins of wool yarn using various natural dyes and they came out beautifully. Best of luck 💚

    Thanks for teaching me how to deseed a pomegranate! Could I use pomegranate skin as a mordant in combination with, say, black beans as a dye?

    • @MargaretByrdColorQuest
      @MargaretByrdColorQuest  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha - you are most welcome! I learned especially for this video 😊 Yes, you can use pomegranate as tannin mordant and then dye with black beans which tends to be a more fugitive dye. The yellowish color will probably shift the color of the black bean result too, but that could be lovely 🤎

    Are you able to store the fabric after mordanting with pomegranate like you can with soy milk? or is it best to dye straight after?

    • @MargaretByrdColorQuest
      @MargaretByrdColorQuest  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, absolutely! I have stored pomegranate (tannin) mordanted fiber and used it repeatedly over the past year. I have skins saved in the freezer from last year, so plan to stock up again soon for my fiber inventory for 2022 😊
