    Hey everyone. thanks for watching! i just wanted to respond to about a dozen or so comments that said what we have in this video is an outhouse pit, not a well.. just to clarify, this was in fact a well. at no point did we find any signs of human waste (rich browish/red soil speckled with seeds).. the entire well was filled with mostly ash and trash, and in some spots it was gravel, likely where the walls had caved it.. it was lined with timber, which wasnt uncommon in the area for wells, and it went down to at least 19 feet, which is far far deeper than any outhouse pit we've ever come across in the dakotas. (we dug down to about 12 feet, and used a 7 foot probe rod at the bottom, and the whole way down was gravel past where we dug.. its likely that the top of the pit collapsed into the hole and it filled the bottom with several yards of debris at which point it wasnt below the water table. i know it may have been a little confusing that we didnt explain why we thought what we thought in the video, and i appreciate anyone who attempted to let us know. again, thanks for watching everyone. have a great day!

    There is a true legend on our farm right here, about my great grand father was just 16 years old back in 1866 having a ball with some dynamite he and a neighbor kid swiped from the nearby railroad office. The neighborhood kids used to sneak in the railroad office all the time stealing the manager and cashier tele station operators candies food and now and then money because they were certified drunks I was told. Just before 4rth of July 1866 they stole an entire box of dynamite from that place put in their wagon drove it home to our place which was the farthest farm from the railroad office and the edge of town. Afternoon of 4rth of July 1866 my great grand daddy earned himself a real beating from big ole great great grand daddy Heikela after they got carried away with tossing the stuff thru the air to make it explode. However a stick went astray and straight down our well. Our well being about 500ft from feet from a natural cistern fed stream was not all that deep yet deep enough that it had hand made concrete and stone stairs that got wrecked. My great great grand daddy Heikela worked my great grand fathers ass off until late August in 100 degree heat to fix them stairs to like perfect condition in the bottom of the well. Later that summer it was just before the winter they built concrete foundation wooden & tar topped well house over the top of the well to complete it with a sort of huge opening sky light so they could see the water flow in the bottom. It was important to keep fissure open that let the water in the hole and great great grand daddy was anal about that it be clean and clear flowing at all times because sucking stuff up in the well pump pipe. The wells cast iron (stick) pipe that went down from the Ames Pump Head is still there on the outside platform I last made circa 1999 and I have repaired it just like they did all their lives. I have rebuilt the guts of that Ames Pump head twice since I am alive. Last time I made a video with my son so he can remember how to rebuild it and what we bought and used to do the job. The adjustable fletch as we call the threaded pressure rod I hand made from stainless steel all-thread this time. I actually got the dynamite story directly from my grand father when he was alive so it wasn't nothing fabricated I actually found evidence of the explosion since the slate and granite stones that got broken still sit out back of the barn just a little farther away since I moved em because of cutting weeds down when we put the metal siding on the barn no more wood replacements crap for this old cowboy...

      well we dont really sell any but we give most of them away.. usually to the owner of the property, or to the historic society.. i mean i really like giving them away bc they are such a cool representation of our local history.. and i just dont have enough space to house them all... we both have a fairly small but decent quality collection. Tom writes books on these sites.. but i mean, selling them just seems like kind of a hassle.. all of the expensive ones are the ones we wanna keep and if we were to ship any of the cheaper ones, it would probably just cost just as much to send as we'd make.. i mean id give most of them away for free tho, if i thought they were going to a place where they will be cared for. well thanks for watching and leaving us a comment!!

    Dry wells that did not produce water or tan dry were the next out house hole. Any thing that couldn’t burn or the kids and dad didn’t want mom to see went down the poop hole so mom wouldn’t find out like moonshine jugs and the families fine China because mom would never look down the hole. Booze and beer bottles also went down the hole. I remember my grandfather telling me these old stories when he would help his father dig wells and outhouse pits for rich families in Texas. Either way it’s cool to see the old bottles and trash items people thru away.

  • @EmptyNestAdventures
    @EmptyNestAdventures 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Are you sure it was a well and not an outhouse? In the Midwest people didn’t throw garbage in their well, but into the outhouse pit. An antique store owner in Nebraska told a friend and I we should dig in old outhouse pits for apothecary bottles

    • @BelowthePlains
      @BelowthePlains  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah, i mean i understand why you would think that.. but there just wasnt any human waste,.. it was about 90% ash and trash and about 10% gravel.. the waste has a very distinct look to it.. it looks like a very rich orangish brown soil that is speckled with thousands of seeds per every cup or so.. its very distinct.. this pit was pure ash, something ive seen before in other wells.. but ive also seen wells that were converted into outhouse pits.. i assumed because the well went dry and they had a pre-dug hole in the ground. and wells going dry was a common phenomenon, sometimes wells would even dry up in less than a year of use, and would basically never produce water again.. but like i said, i understand why you would think that, and i think that if you had been there in person, you would agree.. it was pure ash, and it was a nightmare to dig up and breathe in.. but i appreciate the comment! and thank you for watching, have a great rest of your night!

  • @oldtimeway1
    @oldtimeway1 ปีที่แล้ว

    The two pieces you pulled out were parts of same lamp shade, that style was used on pressure gas lamps. So there was no curbing to that well? Seems unusual that if it was a well or if it was a cistern, that there's not some wall to the hole as wells and cisterns were always walled. When I was a kid over half a century ago, every house in town had a cistern but city water had come so those cisterns were all filled in with furnace and stove ashes and whatever junk you could throw down that hole that "would not attract rats" so it was pretty much pottery, glass, and metal. Gobs of old houses with cisterns and toilet holes behind these old homes. One victorian home I knew had the same outhouse forever, was still used in the 70s. Outhouse was built into another building on the place but they would throw lime down the hole to eat up the "product" and they never threw anything down the hole that would not deteriorate so whomever would come across that hole now the cobshed is gone, won't find anything in it as there was never a bottle dropped down it.

    Just go in South Minneapolis near Lake Harriet. There's an old dump of medical glass and other glass about 2 - 5 ft underground.

    Recently discovered your channel, and have been enjoying it. When I was in high school i took historical artifacts class and went on a dig at Jenkins ferry and found arrow heads and pottery sherds. It was so much fun. I will subscribe to your channel and keep on watching.

    Just stumbled on ur video here... When you guys find blue or red glass save it, even if it's broken. You can sell that to people who want to tumble the pieces. Blue and red glass is really rare to come by especially people who like to search for sea glass on the beaches. Yes the lure to sea glass is to actually find sea glass, but if it's old glass and you know it's old glass The lure is there to also tumble it.

    I had a thought when i saw you were doing a well. If people originally threw breakable things down, they would break from the fall on other things right? Except small bottles.

    • @BelowthePlains
      @BelowthePlains  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      umm.. i think it was pretty common to put them into a cemetery if they lived in or near town, but yeah, absolutely on remote farmsteads and stagecoach stations, the would usually just bury them somewhere in the yard. i have yet to come across a grave yet, thank god. well i appreciate you leaving us a comment and watching!

    All the broken stuff indicates an old out house pit, one wouldn’t throw trash in a well. When a pit got full the out house would be moved toward the house. Dishes were placed in flour sacks as an incentive you can check the pattern to date the shard. Pioneer flour company for example.

    • @BelowthePlains
      @BelowthePlains  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah this was a well, ive gotten that comment about a dozen times. we should have clarified in the video why we thought that. the entire hole was filled with ash and trash, and then gravel at the bottom. it likely collapsed near the top and the new bottom of the well was above the water line, and the ground was too unstable to re-dig.. and it was very common for a well to be filled up with trash after it went dry. sometimes they would pull the outhouse over the well hole, which saved them alot of time and energy having to dig a new privy. ive probably dug about a dozen wells in my life, and id say those are probably the best pits to dig, bc they are so deep, that it likely took them a few decades to fill.. and anyone with a well in their yard in north/south dakota was fairly well off.. but thank you for letting us know, and thanks for watching. have a great day!

    A most fascinating presentation. Je vs remercie!
    Speaking of bottles:
    My most cherished bottle provides an intact cap and quite legible label...yet filled with a usually amber marginally carbonated fluid. I quite regularly find these in cardboard carriers holding some six of these collectibles. I usually find them in my refrigerator...often by my sofa or bed.
    I have identified my cherished finds as ,,Michelob", ,,Heineken", ,,Bud Lite", etc. Are these companies the glass blowers?

    This doesnt look like what somebody would do to an old well. This looks more like what youd find in an old outhouse. That would explain the lime and soil.
    Youd put old broken stuff in the outhouse hole, the soil and lime would be put in to keep smells down and help break down the bodily waste. Then once its filled up, you finish filling the hole and dig a new outhouse.

    Gloves : on both hands, #2--------- #1 is safety... OSHA state that a hole or a trench over 5 ft deep must be shorizontaly shored if not pulled back, terraced on all sides with a guardrail at top , 6 ft back from edge of hole... so, look it all up// it only caves in once......on YOU.

    Hi guys just a suggestion not sure what you do with the broken China but there’s a lot of jewelry makers that probably can us them for their jewelry. Also bottles that are whole in the bottle but the neck is broken they can be made into vases. The bottoms that are broken with embossed info can be use for arts and craft. Just say. I see beauty in everything vintage

    Tom or Jake, I'm sure the thought has crossed y'all's minds but if you're going down this far, you might want to consider tapering out your excavation walls to prevent a collapse. I'm speaking as a fireman that has seen cases of men dying in not-so deep holes. I know it's already laborious enough to did what you do but it's just something to think about 🤔. Love your work, keep'em coming!

      yeah we usually board up the sides if we get down that low. not gonna lie, it was pretty sketchy. that was the spring, and the farmer has given us 2 days out there to find the stuff, and dig them. and this was the last day. we almost didnt dig this one, we had found 5 newer pits out there, and this one we thought was just a trash dump.. so we had no plans on going down lower than 4-5 feet. and it just kept going and going, and by the time we were 10 feet down the sun was already getting low in the sky, and so we just decided to push it, because the stuff was just starting to get good. but normally we wouldnt go down this low without bracing, there just was no time and we decided to roll the dice. but in the future, if we get down past 9 feet, we will start boarding it up. thanks for watching, glad you like the videos!
