      Kilmer Swamp Root was from my hometown of Binghamton, NY. The original Kilmer building still stands and is about a quarter mile from my house. His mansion still stands and has been renovated. Fun fact: Binghamton, NY is the hometown of Rod Serling of the Twilight Zone. Met him a few times, we went to the same high school.

    This was a totally awesome dig! You gotta listen to us old-timers, especially us that are gold miners. A friend of mine just "discovered" a vein in NV that i told him about a couple of years ago. 40 ounces to the ton. My week has been full of incredible videos like this. Thanks Jake!

    I read you don't keep a lot or have a huge collection but I think that would make video of your collection more interesting. Show what you have. Tell what each piece is. Where you found it and why you kept it. A detailed video of the items cleaned up would be interesting to me anyway.

      Most likely because they are a fairly new channel. Hopefully, it is not because they don't do a lot of whooping, hollering and high-fiving like so many of the other diggers. The systematic approach based upon historical research, which they share with us viewers, and the more dignified demeanor of "Below The Plains" is a big part of the channel's appeal for me--I suspect it is for others as well. If "Below The Plains" keeps producing content and we keep viewing, liking, subscribing and commenting the view count will undoubtedly grow!

    Lighting rod insulator's. They were at ground level on the wire for the rod on the roof of old homes. I would of liked to seen a closer look at cracked Blob Top. lol! yeah it was a nightmare to dig, because you could barely work a shovel in there.. we were gonna dismantle the rocks, until we realized that it was a well.. we thought they were just thrown down there for the first 2 feet, but then we realized it was a structure.. it was just too cool to destroy!

      yeah i know.. this one wasnt too deep tho. we actually do alway bring headlamps with us, bc it not uncommon that we are stuck digging after sundown, especially as the days get shorter. and of course when the pits start to get deep, we need them, but we usually turn them off when filming so it doesnt over expose the video. well thanks for watching and leaving us a comment

    I really enjoy your videos, but I have a request I'd like to repeat: Please include more of the discovery process like you did in some of your earliest episodes.
    The historical photos and map images, the zooms into today's Google Earth satellite views of the same subject area and the anecdotes related to a site's history or the bottle producer/user are part of what hooked me and prompted my subscribing to your channel as one of only ten that I have done so. However, while you mention grid probing in your videos, you rarely show much of that process like you did in the earlier videos. I know at least a segment of your viewers would like to see more of that process, as I have read their questions regarding probing. Personally, I find it remarkable that you are able to locate privy pits under hard-packed gravel layers. I've seen glimpses of your use of hammer drills to lay out a grid of what I can only call pilot holes, but I would like to see and hear more detailed coverage of your process. If you could document the process from beginning to finding a suspected pit, describing and showing the difference in probe "feel" upon that instance, and then defining the privy outline with further probing (instead of just showing your outline flags afterwards) I would find it extremely informative and valuable--I believe others would too.
    Also, on the site featured in current video, if there were any remnants of the historical structures still visible at the location they were not evident in the video views. I hope you do not mind the following questions. How extensive of an area did you need to grid and probe to discover the pits you excavated on that site? How finely did you grid, as close as 1-foot intervals?
    Do you also often find surface dumps on your explorations? If so, are they usually already dug by previous bottle and relic hunters?
    And, do you guys purchase, or make your own probes?

    • @BelowthePlains
      @BelowthePlains  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yeah we plan on showing the gridding in some future videos. we just wanna kinda try keep it streamlined.. and yeah, i was thinking about adding the satellite zoom back in, but its just kinda fuzzy about the rules on copyright.. i cant find a clear answer on how to make it okay, and i tried to properly site our work, but all the satellite imagery is from before we got monetized, so we are kinda unsure if we could eventually get a copyright strike on our channel. i actually do want to add it back in, but i dont wanna risk getting the channel deleted, and yeah we've been recording more of the actual sites, unfortunately at this place all that was left was a cistern and a light pole,.. the whole thing had been demolished.. it was just a beautiful pasture now,,, but the outhouse is usually between 30 to 200 feet away. usually out the back door, and usually they put them on the side that blows the smell away from the house. usually the northwest corner. and yeah we grid in lines of about 100 feet, and we seperate the rows by about 1-2 feet.. then we probe every 2-3 feet up and down the rows. we start at the most likely areas and work our way out. but to be honest, about 40% of the time, the ground has sunk and you can actually see a depression left over.. but yeah, we are gonna set up a future video as more of a tutorial that anything. just give us a few months, we got a bunch of videos already recorded and we wanna get those our right away. we do find surface dumps in old farmsteads.., they are almost always on farmsteads.. they usually dont give out a bunch and sometimes theyre just tiny junk yards.. so its alot of work, but if we do find one, we will at least give it a good look before we tear it open.. usually isnt that great tho.. but town dumps, those could be a gold mine. only dug a few, but they are really cool, and really fun. you never know what you are gonna find. sites are rarely ever dug.. but it happens. we also know all of the older diggers up here, and they have told us where theyve been so.. we usually dont dig one thats already done, but.. it happens.. we purchase the probes.. oldwestbottles.com.. i think thats the right site,. tom is the one who does that, this is jake, i kinda run the channel and make the videos. well i think thats all of your questions. and hey... thank you for subbing. i really do appreciate each and every person who has, and i want to entertain and educate people so im committed to making the best product as i possibly can. so dont hesitate to leave us a comment whether its a question, comment, criticism or suggestion. just let us know, and we will build our content around what our viewers want, thanks you, if i missed a question, just leave me another comment

      @@BelowthePlains I'm certainly no copyright expert, but you might want to investigate ArcGIS as an alternative source of the satellite imagery. Their base imagery is used by diverse governmental and private third-party app developers. I personally know of several counties in WA and MT that place their various GIS property information layers on top of ArcGIS base maps. I believe they've become, or are becoming, a standard for Assessor and Engineering departments across the country.

    How do you talk people into letting you dig?

    • @BelowthePlains
      @BelowthePlains  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hahaha we just go knock on their door and explain to them what we do.. we've been in a few newspapers so we show them that, bc sometimes i get the feeling they think we are like trying to scam them or something. we explain that outhouse pits were like garbage cans and that threw bottles down them, then we show them some bottles.. then we explain what was on their property and tell them that any damages we do we will pay for, and we will put everything back so it wont be noticable and we give them our card so if the ground settles or the grass dies, we will come back and make it right.. you'd be surprised tho. id say 90% of people we ask say yes.. maybe 80% at the lowest. idk people in the dakotas are super nice.. we have gone to other places and we get mostly no's.. but like small town people, are fucking awesome. idk why they always say yes honestly! it kinda blows my mind.. and they usually will go tell their neighbors about us and we end up getting into more back yards. the first time we show up in a town, it usually takes some time for us to get our foot in the door, but within a few weeks, we will get people inviting us to dig.. its awesome. kinda restored my faith in humanity. people are generally good kind people

    Great dig guys. That old well just kept giving up the goods. Lots of trash yes, but the treasures was worth it.
    Love seeing so many old bottles coming out still intact after all these years buried.

    • @BelowthePlains
      @BelowthePlains  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah i know right. such a strange pit. probably ranged from like 1870 to like 1910.. and they had other pits there that were like only 5-10 years in range.. so they must have been using it as a trash pit while they dug separate outhouses.. when we probed it we hit the rocks and we assumed it was concrete, so we almost didnt even dig it! well thank you for leaving us a comment

    For we novices, what is the difference between tool top and applied top bottles?

    • @BelowthePlains
      @BelowthePlains  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      well.. tom knows that a little better than i do, so i think i know but not 100%^.. applied tops i think we hand shaped and added onto the motlen glass, and the tooled tops are a generation newer, usually in the 1890-1910 era, and they i think we part of the bottle but shaped by a tool.. applied tops are a little older and cruder. you can tell them apart by the way they look, and the seam running down the side of the bottle. thanks for leaving us a comment

    I just came to the part where you said that you had found an ‘English’ Whisky. Are you using the word ‘English’ instead of ‘British’? Also Whisky was mostly Scottish at that time. (Different Country)

    I know some bottles fetch a pretty penny. I’m wondering, what’s the most valuable bottle you’ve found and where’d you find it? There’s spots in central California where the Chinese mined. If you dismantle the stone mountains they built, you can find some really cool stuff.

    I worry of cave ins..esp.if your alone..when perhaps you could tie off yourself...through a pvc pipe tethered to the front/rear of your vehicle..if a cave in occured..you would have air supplied and perhaps be able to free yourself..this is how we mined the back country..it did save us at one time..we never dug deeper than our pvc ..we usually carried a 2" ran a rope through it, secured to ourselves with a carbine and then to a secure item...a 2" 2 ft long then a 1&1//2 to 1 inch fitted together made a size ft air supply yet broke down to easily carry...I really love your content....be safe.

    140 years someone could have sat down and enjoyed a root beer whilst leisurely pooping, probably with a paper in the other hand; blissfully unaware that in 140 years someone would be digging in that poop to uncover the same empty bottle of soda! History is wonderful!

    I hope you are given the right to keep what you find. A lot of very old pieces came out of this dig, seems before America was making its own bottles and everyday needs, since some came from Merry Ole England. That old well was known to exist and people over the years continued to use it as a dumping place. Yes, people had to dispose of trash even then.
