hey dude, im pretty sure the interview with Jim Scott about the mics is in reference to Californication, not By The Way. Cali is a very 'mono' sounding album whereas BTW definitely utilizes more of John's stereo thing. I would also say with 99.9% confidence that the solo on Minor Thing & Can't Stop are the Big Muff. I preferred the tone of 'B' in terms of its EQ.. must've been the Big Muff... To keep it creamy make sure to keep the tone control above 2 o clock and don't max out the sustain knob because that's when it becomes farty & weird! Great tone all round tho! Look forward to more vids from you!
Thanks Olley, allot of people say it’s the big muff. I want it to be the big muff lol, I’ll definitely revisit the solo in another video. Probably when I do “this is the place”. That one sounds more muffiny. When I tried my settings for the DS-2 and the Big Muff I went by ear with what I heard in the room. Sounds too bright after recording it and I’m pretty sure I had the sustain all the up. BTW is a stereo guitar album. Some songs and panned harder L/R then others. I think Minor thing has a more centered guitar tracks so I just did it in mono and panned a little to the right but it should had been slightly panned to the left and right now that I listen back with fresh ears.
Advanced Happy New Year! Congrats on your new mic setup! BTW, with your hair so long (actually longer than Slane Castle length), do you plan to style it like John's?
@ I have a plan for that only problem is I want to get a proper amp switcher so I can switch between both amps on the fly through the same cab without having to stop playing swapping cables blah blah blah. Looking to get an Ampete or Khe amp/cab switcher. I just need to save up for either one or wait for one used on reverb 👍
Damn that was interesting! I came through the DS-2 vs Big Muff thing before and I have always ended up with the DS-2 🙃 Plus, I am quite surprised by the fact that he used the Showman for this song (honestly I thought he used his Major+Jubilee classic combination). Amazing episode, as always. 😊
Dude there is a quote where Rick Rubin says John used the showman with a Marshall but I can’t find it anywhere 😢 I also didn’t try the big muff + micro amp for the comparison to see if that would work better 🤫
@@MistaMahcosit’s from the Rick Rubin In The Studio book - you can find online versions to read. “Frusciante’s amplifier rig included a 200-watt Marshall Major and a 100-watt Marshall Super Bass, one of which he usually ran in a stereo setup with a Fender Showman Blackface guitar amp pushing the Marshall. Additionally, he used the Ibanez wh10 wah-wah pedal, kept in a trebly position. “I was using a lot of effects. We wanted to create a real sense of atmosphere. I used a few Line 6 Echo pedals, an Electro- Harmonix flanger and the Big Muff a lot . . . [As far as amps] I was using this big Fender spring reverb from the ’60s. I used it with a modulation synthesizer - that’s the sound you hear on the ‘Throw Away Your Television’ chorus. . . . It has ‘great reverb’ but also a really thick sound and a great tone. On ‘Don’t Forget Me,’ I used an enve- lope filter and I was using the volume pedal a lot on that song too - and that Line 6 pedal in one of the analogue delay settings to where it’s constantly feeding back. Just as it was about to feed back, I’d just turn the knob as I’m playing to prevent it from going into full-on feedback. It gives it that spooky kind of feeling.” The thing about don’t forget me puzzles me a lot, because i don’t hear an envelope filter or any feedback on the delay repeats!
@@OllyVert Brother thank you for this quote I have been looking everywhere for this has been driving me mad! I get allot of messages about John using the Jubilee for BTW and I can now show them the quote so they can leave me alone haha Speaking of Don’t forget me the delay effect you got during the live stream with Will was the closest anyone’s ever gotten! You have to send me those!
Thanks! Unlimited love is good. Canteen has a few songs I like. Peace and love, Bella, and bag of gins are pretty much the only ones I listen too from that album.
Maybe I don’t see allot info on how he recorded his solo stuff. I know he recorded some albums with Jim Scott, thought about doing something with his electronic work
@@MistaMahcossorry I mean you stop playing a chord for a beat whilst moving to the next chord. You could practice so you are doing the chords constantly without lifting your fingers off the fretboard
This is some high quality content and lovely playing. Thoroughly enjoyed this video thanks.
Thank you glad you liked it!

So good man🥂 I love your strat what model is it?
I believe it’s a FSR strat from 2008

His hair is more curly than mine it would be a pain to do that haha maybe for a live tone video lol
LMAO@@MistaMahcosbut I do have an idea for a future video:
Pairing the Major with Silver Jubilee vs Pairing the Major with the Showman

@@MistaMahcos The Muff & Micro Amp do not like each other (personal experience) 😆The DS-2 sounds very spot on tbh...
Dude! Fantastic work!!!
Thank you!
awesome content man, we need this part of TH-cam

any plans on doing john’s solo music/ataxia stuff?

Thats amaaaeing, could you do cant stop or get on top?
I have a special video in mind for can’t stop. 😬
It’s hard to do the funk section with constant 16th notes but is worth you practicing
You know what helped me was following Anthony’s vocals. They land on the down beats for that part with quarter notes.

Could you do the Californication tour live tone recreation?
I’m going to do a deep dive for John’s live tone for sure.
killer
I’ll see you have a mesa boogie did John use those?
John said he didn’t like mesas because they were too complicated
69th like lolololololoLol
Lmao
