Being frozen to death is actually quite gentle, one just falls asleep kind of. Being from nordic countries I am very familiar with that. I want to thank the video maker for cleaning the headstones, hats off
Me and my brother, David, walked for miles and miles over the hills of Rishton, Great Harwood, Clayton le Moors and Blackburn as children, in the long winter of 1963 he was 10 and I was 9, we walked up the delph between Blackburn and Rishton through, in places, must have been 6ft of snow and ice, Icicles in places were 10ft long, we did this for adventure and the only sustenance we had was a couple of jam butties and a bottle of water. we skated on ice, unfortunately I fell in and my brother was so scared he would get into trouble he hung my clothes on a tree in his naivety thinking they would dry. Needless to say I walked home in frozen clothes. Perhaps we were just lucky but I think we can all remember being children and wanting great adventures. So very sad for these lads, thankyou for sharing
That must have been frightening 😮 As you say, we have all done crazy things that in hindsight were dangerous at the time. And kids will be kids who love to go out on adventures. Also, thank you for watching and commenting, it means a lot to us.
@@annebeckettmorris577 It was a daily occurance for me going through the ice in Cheshire, we had a constant furness at the wood factory & slap our frozen wet clothes on that, dried in moments, any longer they would set on fire, we even laid our clothes on the road waiting for a car to mangle them but early 70s a car passed about every hour or so 😀
Wow…..that must have been awful. I’m from Texas and usually we don’t get a lot of snow. I can’t imagine walking in snow that deep for any reason. I’m glad it ended well for you guys. Sorry for these guys who died.
Myself and my Dad were caught in a blizzard after visiting Darwen Tower, on the way down it began to snow. Within minutes it was a complete whiteout so much so that the town wasn't visible and the path down was covered in drifting snow which soon came up to my Dad's waist. He had to carry me down on his back as i couldn't feel my legs enough to walk. By coincidence he had told me this story about the boys the day before and being only 8 years old I was petrified that the same would happen to us. As I'm writing this 62 years later it's obvious we survived although frozen and wet! 🥶 I should point out that when we set off to the Tower it was a clear fine winter's day and by coincidence on a Sunday.
It's madness how quickly the weather can change. I think I may have mentioned it further down below, but we saw the storm clouds brewing in the distance and chanced getting the story done. But even by the time we left the carpark, it lashed it down 😅
I lived in Darwen for 5 years and enjoyed sunnyhurst wood' Darwen tower and the moors leading over to rivington' ive Been caught out a few times with hail storms and torrential downpours.... A beautiful part of Lancashire but can be extremely dangerous.... Those poor lads😢😢😢 Great video by the way and you have a new member 👍
Aww thank you Mr Thomas fir subscribing. Yes Darwen Tower moors can be daunting just after a shower, so bet horrendous during winter. Thanks for watching 😊
I'm from West Michigan. Our Great Lakes create lake effect snow. Went out one morning in a Spring jacket but came back in a white out blizzard. Good times.
Oh wow! Its absolutely crazy just how quick the weather can turn. Over here in the North of England, and especially on the moorland, you can see the storm clouds coming on over from some distance away, and although you think it will take a while for them to reach you, there are upon you in no time.
I remember my Grandma telling me the sad story about the three boys freezing to death on the moors, when I was young... I was born in Darwen & live in Blackburn,Lancashire🇬🇧
You certainly make people aware of events i,and maybe many others watching this, have never heard of. How truly unfortunate these poor lads were on that winters day/night. You bring to life old events with reverence , which in this day and age, is truly appreciated.
The worst we have encountered hasn't been snow, but extremely heavy rain. Even worse as we were driving and you just could not see. We had to pull over and just wait it out, but we were the lucky ones as we had shelter. Not like the boys in this story, unfortunately 😔
First time viewing your channel. Great video, I liked that when you’re talking, there’s no other music or sounds to distract and when there is music, it’s appropriate and not too loud. Tragic story and it so easily did and still can happen with unpredictable winter weather. I’m from NL 🇨🇦. We have many of these stories too sadly. Will subscribe 🙂
We try to add some music just to break it up a little and to add some drama or emotion to the stories. We also try and fit the music according to the story.
Thanks for commenting on the music, Chris does put alot of work in making sure right part for right music and not too loud. Thanks for subscribing, we upload every Monday at 8.05pm. 😊
Many thanks Steve. Surprisingly, the main roads where okay to travel on, but there was no way we could risk the moors as there is some walking to do to get to the location where their bodies were found.
What an incredibly sad story. Most, if not all of us have done something our parents or elders have warned us not to do, and as luck would have it, we came out unscathed (and if we're really lucky, a good lesson was instilled). Tragically, for these boys that wasn't the case. My grandmother died of hypothermia - she was what we would now classify in the early-mid stages of dementia - she still had some clarity but was stubborn and refused to live in a care facility (across the street from her own home! She could visit if she wished. She was a widower and lived alone, though grandchildren would come and help her every day). One day she just walked out in -25 degree weather with no jacket and, when they found her a couple of days later, she was sitting under a big conifer tree, frozen. It was a small town/rural area in Canada, so there was a lot of territory to cover. The doctor said it was a peaceful death, though I'm curious if the medical community still thinks of hypothermia in the same way. I can only imagine the terror these boys felt knowing they were stuck in a massive storm and weren't properly prepared, with no one nearby...
We have a few stories of people losing their lives on the moors around Calderdale... but from so long back they've turned to folklore. Well done finding one of the graves in the snow. Great video as always 👍
Many thanks Mat. I'd heard of this story for years but never really looked into it until recently. We were sad we couldn't visit other locations or find Williams grave, but the snow severely hampered us.
Excellent coverage ! never heard of this tragedy, being from Blackburn there are not many tragedies locally that are not known to me, But this one was, keep up the good work,
Many thanks Rob. It's another tragic one indeed. I so wanted to find Williams grave but it was hazardous not knowing where to walk. I'll bet his was very close though.
Another great, but tragic video. 3 young lives so sadly lost. I googled the boys headstone and the last line reads "A good name endureth for ever." Thanks again for more great content Chris 🙂
Another sad tale. Those boys must have been so scared. My great grandparents and their families were living in Darwen at the time. They would probably have heard of the tragedy 😢
Many thanks, Catherine. We intend to walk over the moors to where it actually took place, as the snow prevented us from doing so in this original video. It'll be a follow-up video, so it won't be as long, but we just think it might be worthwhile to show people where it all happened.
We lived in Darwen for about 18 months in the mid-80s and would often walk up to the Tower, starting from the Sunnyhurst pub...but only in summer! We would never dream of doing the trip once the leaves fell and the nights really started to draw in. I always described the view at the top like the moon landing quote: ''Magnificent desolation''!
Many thanks Lorraine. We have one or two that might interest you with a lot more to come. If you have any stories, then by all means let us know as we love it when people recommend something that we may not have heard of before.
Cheers pal. We were a little gutted to not get onto the moors, but it was just too risky with the amount of snow and as you see in the video, that fog bank came down extremely quick even as we were filming.

Many thanks for that. We will make the odd mistake in some videos, such as place names (that's my main issue as I always remember them before we set off out, but have on a few occasions got them wrong when in front of a video). But we try our best to recount the stories as they happened.
Thank you Claire and glad to have you on board. We released new stories every Monday at 8.05pm. We have a lovely little community here with everyone interacting. Glad you enjoyed and thank you for the kind comments 😊😊
I just discovered this channel and the quality and work put into each one is absolutely phenomenal. Big channels don't even work this hard half the time.
There had already been so many deaths from the war that it must've been just heartbreak upon heartbreak. And the influenza outbreak was just around the corner.
Such a good video indeed but at the same time very sad 😢 just shows that the weather can change and be fatal at the same time. Must have been terrible to freeze to death. Such a tragic story but very informative as well. Thanks, very interesting indeed!!
Thank you Shirley. That's the thing with these stories, they are always sad but interesting at the same time. But it's about trying to remember the victims and hopefully giving them another voice, albeit in video form, so they are never forgotten.
❤😢😮 so sad I can’t even imagine what happened in all that snow ❄️ three boys bless them all amen 🙏 thxs for the story Rip 🪦 boys 20/24 good photos 😊 nice Sir ❤
That was a very sad one those poor boys and yes Ralph was a hero. I know it was probably freezing for you making this video but how beautiful it looks I love snow scenes but only from indoors looking out. I can't imagine what it was like for the boys freezing to death I never liked playing out in snow as a kid I am a wimp!. Thank you for another brilliant video Chris well done. 👏👏👏👏
We debated on whether or not to travel over to Darwen this morning as the snow had dropped quite badly overnight where we live. But the roads, to be fair to the council, had stood up well and had been gritted, so they were very much driveable. I really wanted to get over the moors to Old Lyons farm house ruins, the place where the boys were finally discovered, but it was just too snowy.
It's crazy to think that it was, from all accounts, a sunny, clear afternoon when they set off and yet within a short space of time, snow clouds had gathered and released a torrent of snow upon them.
Thank you for this fantastic video. I have never heard of this case but I am glad I saw this video and will probably view it again. Question: when they found the frozen bodies, were they upright or lying down?
William was found face down, hands covering his face but they seemed to be clenched. As for both Ralph and James, they were face up. Poor James was only found because one of his feet was showing through a snowdrift 😔 I can't imagine the fear all three would have felt. Thanks for watching and commenting, it's always great when people comment as we love the interactions with these stories.
Something similar happened to me a few years ago although with a different ending. I went to visit my uncle aunt and cousins on a Christmas Day in Gainesville, GA. My uncle warned me that bad weather was coming but I didn’t listen. We used GPS to try and get to our home in Tennessee. I was reading a magazine and not paying attention. It started snowing heavily. I was with my husband and young daughter. We got stuck in the snow. A couple in a Jeep took my daughter and me in a hotel in the next town. My husband got the car out of the snow easily with the lighter weight in the car. My daughter told me later that she didn’t think she’d ever see her father again. We made our way safely home the next day. I still feel guilty about getting us in that situation. I will always be a good navigator from now on. 😢😢😢😢😢
We walked along Darwen Moors last year in summer and it was blistering hot. We went to film the story of the polish army officer who tragically lost his life when a plane he was flying crashed onto the moorland. Its a vast, open space, and it is quite easy to see how quickly you could become trapped should the weather turn on you. There is absolutely nowhere to go to take cover and wait it out, and in the boys case, other than a wall, they had nothing to help them.
Many thanks watching and commenting. Its a terrible story and its one we plan to revisit, but next time visit the location where these boys sadly lost their lives.
*I hadn't found your channel a year ago, so this is a new one to me* What a bleak landscape. Awwwww 3 young adventurers, meeting such a horrific end. The poor Lads. Again told with respect . So sad.
Yes, this is one of the most haunting stories we have covered. The fact that all three boys lost their lives in such tragic events and with the weather turning on them so quickly, we can only imagine the fear they all felt. We will be going to the moors this year and to retrace their final steps.
We couldn't believe how quickly the snow fell that day. We planned to visit the locations where the boys sadly died, but we just couldnt do it. It is a story we do have planned to go back to, but next time travel to the moors and the exact places where the bodies were discovered.
@@DaysofHorror As a matter of interest when doing my family tree many years ago I had occasion to travel to Fenton cemetery in Stoke, i could not believe my luck as they also put the home address of the deceased on the headstone's!!, great confirmation info when applying for death certificates.
Im from Darwen and heard the story of the three young lads who died up there on that harsh day I was over there Saturday morning run and it wasn’t pleasant if you got up to the fingerpost you will find a little sign for the three lads and if you google bull hill hospital what it was but it’s great sad story.
Hi Pete. I think I've seen that sign. Is it on a wooden post of sorts? And it's only a small sign at that if it's the same one 🤔 Yeah, it was the hospital. When I was doing the video, I had asylum in my head but realised when adding that old OS map overlay it was the hospital.
We love telling the stories and visiting their resting place. It's just ashame alot of headstones are no longer there on many stories we cover, but there is something beautiful about Cemeteries. Thanks Claire to you comments, hope you have a great week 😊
We have only visited once, earlier this year. The video should have been much better, but we were hampered by rain most of the morning, and a lot of the narrow pathways had been closed off to the public as it was too slippery. th-cam.com/video/4n-cmqxq7IQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=xORF9wu-bBLCvBaQ
At 18 yu think he shld have known better- But look at me. 18 and i was like yea lets go camping this wkend! Well fast forward, Adirondacks, Nov. And a sudden Snowstorm. (Or was it for the winter?). At 18, yu have making new adventures in yur soul. So sad 🙏. Slower paced but I watched the whole thing . PS Any Adventure in Britian, one has to stay glued to weathe
My younger brother sister and I all under the age of 11:00 walked 2 me to the local store it was beautiful out. Then as soon as we left the store it was a blizzard a snow blizzard like I've never seen before. I walked ahead of him being the bigger one. All I did was looking for one of my feet because there was nowhere else to look and we were chained arm and arm with each other and the only way I knew you were at our street was by landmark. When we got home my mother was terrified it's so grateful to see us. We didn't have a car in 1970 soooo... I'm only posting because I think something like that may have happened to these three very young boys and I don't think it was a misadventure on their part.
Well done on the video. A very sad story. I was surprised to see so much snow in Darwen. We’ve had nothing in Clitheroe! I take it the reason they didn’t make it safely was because they were completely lost just walking in circles? Or had they wandered off track and it had got dark as it would’ve gone dark early that time of year or had one of the boys maybe got ill or exhausted or maybe injured themselves? Or had the snow become too deep to walk through? I suppose we’ll never find that out.
It's a complete mystery and as you say, we will probably never find out what happened. I think the snow may have come down that fast, it made it hard for the boys to navigate the terrain and they possibly made a wrong turn. I guess if visibility was also poor, they could easily get lost high up on those moors.
I personally like the rods and find them fascinating, but they are diversive and a lot don't like or believe in them. That's why I havent really used them since.
We say boys, but most left school at 14 in those days, so the 18 year old would very much have been considered a young man - he would have been left school and working for four years. In fact given it was 1917 I am surprised he was not off fighting as many young men that age were. I wonder if he had some physical and/or mental disability that kept him at home? Perhaps also the reason he was hanging out with younger lads?
Great story, but did you notice the branch move and a bit of snow jiggled down as you told of the poor lady statue that is now black n blue. Probably her that came to say Hi. 😄
We visited today I'm not sure if u noticed as its not in the video but on the back of Ralph's stone is his parents who lay beside them who are Ralph senior and martha if u want the photos contact me pls

Very sad story! I once attended Tom Brown the Trackers Survival school! Tom was trained by an Apache Tracker & Scout. Grandfather Stalking Wolf. Knowledge of how to build a shelter ,even a snow hut, might have saved these boys! Tom has trained US Army Rangers Survival skills !Huddling together in a snow shelter might have saved these three boys! Tom has tracked missing children in wilderness areas for the FBI. He has written many excellent books on survival akills! His book Urban & Suburban Survival Skills is especially a good book to read ,in this day and age!
Interesting and sad story, being from Darwen/ Blackburn ive always known about the 3 boys but never seen there graves and ive not heard of the white lady at all, so Interesting.
A mob might not have worked either.Unless there a towers close by,I imagine the moors arent littered with them.Plus weather can do strange things to mob signals,on a heavy cloudy day I always have problems with conections.

Welcome on board Sharon. Yes alot of our stories have a tearful ending and we try to cover forgotten stories from the past. Thanks for watching
Another new subscriber. Sad tale 😢. 🙏💙
Thank you Cat and welcome. We upload every Monday at 8.05pm.
It was a very sad story/ending 😢
Hi you just appeared in my feed. I love your storytelling new sub 😊
Many thanks for your kind words. Hopefully there are more videos you will enjoy on the channel!
Welcome on board, glad you enjoyed. We have a lovely little community here. 😊
I just discovered this channel and the quality and work put into each one is absolutely phenomenal. Big channels don't even work this hard half the time.
Thank you for appreciating the hard work filming, researching and editing. Glad your encouraging the channel. Thanks again for your kind words 😊
You are too kind 😇 We do try, but we also make the odd mistake. We hope we are getting better as each video is produced.
I watch one upload and I'm hooked to your channel, I've only done that about 4 other times where I have subscribed to a channel from one upload.
Thats very kind of you 😊. I've done the same myself with other channels. One video, Im hooked.
Seen your film on utube for the first time last night. Excellent just subscribed.👍.keep up the good work.
Many thanks for your support Colin 😀
Welcome on board Colin. Glad you enjoyed. We have a lovely community here and a great selection of stories for you 😊
Thank You for sharing, always be mindful of the weather no matter where you live. Such a sad story. My heart goes out to the families and community.
Xx
There had already been so many deaths from the war that it must've been just heartbreak upon heartbreak. And the influenza outbreak was just around the corner.
Yeah sad times 😢
Such a good video indeed but at the same time very sad 😢 just shows that the weather can change and be fatal at the same time. Must have been terrible to freeze to death. Such a tragic story but very informative as well. Thanks, very interesting indeed!!
Thank you Shirley. That's the thing with these stories, they are always sad but interesting at the same time. But it's about trying to remember the victims and hopefully giving them another voice, albeit in video form, so they are never forgotten.
Odd location for a cemetery, all the ground is unlevel. Looks scary.😵😵😵😵😵😵😵😵
It was to walk on...
I thought that same thing but it’s a very cool old cemetery from what I can see. Need to add I’ve never been there
Very old indeed, but I do.like cemeteries I'm some way...
I love watching your new video tonight it was a sad one😢 I hope you do more videos like this one keep up with the good work guys ❤❤

Thanks for watching!
Thanks Sylvia, glad to have you on board and glad you enjoyed the video 😊
Brilliant Work Guy's keep them Coming Peace ✌️ be With You
That was a very sad one those poor boys and yes Ralph was a hero.
Brilliant vid Chris, sad story but maybe a warning! We all underestimate Mother Nature.
They had their lives cut short. Very heartbreaking 💔. May they rest in peace 🙏 😢
Rip 🙏
I'm a new subscriber . I've never heard of this. Very interesting.
Thanks you for joining our little community and glad to have you on board. Glad you enjoyed the video. 😊
Welcome aboard!
Agreed, Ralph is a hero. Bless their precious little hearts. BEAUTIFUL scenery!!!
Omg, so glad you lived to tell the tale. What would have happened is so scary. Thanks for sharing your story Dania. Have a great week 😊
Lovely video, but it was a very sad topic. May the boys rest peacefully and so their parents.
Rip 🙏
Such a sad story but told so well ❤
Thanks Catherine, yes Chris told the story beautifully. Thanks for watching 😊
@@Daysofhorror-vickie your welcome I've subscribed , so many well made videos x
@catherinepalmer4812 we really appreciate your kind words ❤
This was such a sad story, may those boys RIP. Thanks for the video and story
Many thanks watching and commenting. Its a terrible story and its one we plan to revisit, but next time visit the location where these boys sadly lost their lives.
*I hadn't found your channel a year ago, so this is a new one to me*
What a bleak landscape.
Thank you.
You're welcome!
Im from the US. I just subscribed. Sad story
Thank you for watching and glad to have you on board 😊
Wow looks like never go on adventure in Darwen when it's winter. Rip boys so sad 😢
Rip 🙏
Rip 🙏
Thank you ! May the Boys rest in peace 🙏
My relatives came from the Darwen area so it was nice to see where many of them are at rest thanks
Thanks Elaine. 😊
Great effort guys considering the inclement weather, one I would have left until spring at least, well done!!
As a mother of boys, this breaks my heart. The parents must have been in absolute agony. You would never recover.😢😢😢
😢 yes, I feel that too
Sad story. American cousin, Michael Bolton, survived. He went on to become a singer....
Very sad indeed 😢. Glad you enjoyed and glad your cousin survived. Have a lovely week David 😊
Martha Jane's memorial is a FABULOUS piece of sculpture!!!!
Maybe you saw the statue in summer when the moss and lichens die off, would likely appear much lighter
Cemeteries are full of amazing stories tragedies and history
We love telling the stories and visiting their resting place. It's just ashame alot of headstones are no longer there on many stories we cover, but there is something beautiful about Cemeteries. Thanks Claire to you comments, hope you have a great week 😊
@@Daysofhorror-vickie I havnt had chance to watch any of your videos yet but do you have any from Highgate Cemetary. It’s my fave cemetary !
We have only visited once, earlier this year. The video should have been much better, but we were hampered by rain most of the morning, and a lot of the narrow pathways had been closed off to the public as it was too slippery.

This was really interesting I love history
Thanks glad you enjoyed Hannah
At 18 yu think he shld have known better- But look at me. 18 and i was like yea lets go camping this wkend! Well fast forward, Adirondacks, Nov. And a sudden Snowstorm. (Or was it for the winter?). At 18, yu have making new adventures in yur soul. So sad 🙏. Slower paced but I watched the whole thing . PS Any Adventure in Britian, one has to stay glued to weathe
Yeah, agree we all think we knew best when we were 18!! Sad ending for these 😢
My younger brother sister and I all under the age of 11:00 walked 2 me to the local store it was beautiful out.
I see the thought process..
May all three boys R.I.P
Rip 🙏
That weather looks herific that was an amazing story well told and what those young people went through must have been terrible
Thank you, Karl.
Have a great weekend from V&C 🙃
It's not the most horrible way to die you just end up falling asleep basically and RIP BOYS 🙏
😢
I can't imagine how the weather can change that fast and deadly.
😢
This is incredibly sad those poor boys may they rest in paradise 😢❤️
I personally like the rods and find them fascinating, but they are diversive and a lot don't like or believe in them. That's why I havent really used them since.
RIP 😢. Thanks for watching and commenting Alana.

Even more tragic is that this happened so close to Christmas.😔
Bev from Indiana 😊
Hi Bev, many thanks for joining our little community :-)
Hi Bev, hope weather better than here in the UK at the moment. Thanks for watching 😊
Must have been extra horrific for the family given the carnage of the war and the Influenza.
Yes, you can only image how they felt, horrific 😢
We say boys, but most left school at 14 in those days, so the 18 year old would very much have been considered a young man - he would have been left school and working for four years. In fact given it was 1917 I am surprised he was not off fighting as many young men that age were. I wonder if he had some physical and/or mental disability that kept him at home? Perhaps also the reason he was hanging out with younger lads?
Good points !
Thanks for the story god bless you ❤❤❤❤😂❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you ❤
You are so welcome
Great story, but did you notice the branch move and a bit of snow jiggled down as you told of the poor lady statue that is now black n blue. Probably her that came to say Hi. 😄
I didn't notice! Mind you, some say this statue and the lady it represents is apparently haunted. I don't believe in the story, but many do!
😊 maybe
Brave heroes of their time. Rest In Peace beloved boys. Blessings Be.

Also Martha his wife died Dec 2nd 1924 aged 59yrs
We have now found william and his family
Interesting! We really struggled with William due to the snow. Do you have a photo of their grave by any chance?

Very sad story! I once attended Tom Brown the Trackers Survival school! Tom was trained by an Apache Tracker & Scout. Grandfather Stalking Wolf. Knowledge of how to build a shelter ,even a snow hut, might have saved these boys! Tom has trained US Army Rangers Survival skills !Huddling together in a snow shelter might have saved these three boys! Tom has tracked missing children in wilderness areas for the FBI. He has written many excellent books on survival akills! His book Urban & Suburban Survival Skills is especially a good book to read ,in this day and age!
1 Thessalonians 5:17
“Pray without ceasing.”
How many young lads would give their coats today I wonder...
I could count on one hand 😆!!
Just watching and commenting on our video's we appreciate and helps us grow.
Interesting and sad story, being from Darwen/ Blackburn ive always known about the 3 boys but never seen there graves and ive not heard of the white lady at all, so Interesting.
Glad you enjoyed, from Vickie & Chris
Excellent movie old school no cgi
Another tragic story ,if it had happened today the boys would have had mobile phones etc . Is that a Darwen accent I detect?
Im not that far away from Darwen, but no, not a Darwen accent. I'm closer to Haslingden/Helmshore.
A mob might not have worked either.Unless there a towers close by,I imagine the moors arent littered with them.Plus weather can do strange things to mob signals,on a heavy cloudy day I always have problems with conections.
Very sad when this kind of thing happens
😢
If its that cold where is your gloves sir
