1870??? She'd have been 106! She was born in 1890.

You are absolutely right about Christie being a reading slump buster. Once you start reading her, you can't put her books down!! I usually get so hooked, I finish her books in 3-4 days! I'm reading all of Christie's novels and short stories in chronological order, and I've read about 55 of them, so I'm getting close to the end. The next one on my list is The Mirror Cracked From Side to Side.
I think that you would really like The Secret Adversary actually because it is very similar in tone and style to The Man in the Brown Suit, which is your favorite Christie. It has that same suspense and cloak and dagger tone to it, also somewhat like Why Didn't They Ask Evans, which you also really enjoyed.
I'm glad that you mentioned Ordeal By Innocence, it is one of my more recent reads that I really liked, I think the characterization in that novel is fantastic!! My favorite Christie is And Then There Were None, even though everyone else loves it also, I just really like the sense of dread and overall plotting of that story. An underrated Marple is A Pocketful of Rye, I really loved that one. An underrated Poirot is Lord Edgware Dies. Thanks for this great video!

Very good top Christie selections. Ten Little Indians is my favorite AC for sure, and the best whodunit I've ever read. Superb in the "locked room" mystery tradition (only it's an island!). Haven't read The Main in the Brown Suit, but my wife has and liked it very much. She also enjoyed They Came to Baghdad, to throw in that title, in case you want to track it down. But yeah, you mentioned the others I would have: Orient Express, Roger Ackroyd, Cards on the Table, etc. I think you'll like Death on the Nile as well. BTW, our family saw The Mousetrap in London (2014). Splendid!

Okay thanks! I'm sure I have the Baghdad one on my wishlist. I will get to it one of these days when I finally start buying up all of Christie's books.

Two of her very best mystery novels didn't feature either Poirot or Miss Marple: Crooked House and Endless Night.

Very interesting that she worked at a pharmacy! I just started reading her this year and have only read 3 so far. My favorite of those three was And Then There Were None. Definitely want to read more next year so it’s nice to have some suggestions of what to read next.
I wanted to read Murder on the Orient Express but I read a book this year that spoiled the ending!

Agh! Nothing worse than spoilers!!! I just did a video on spoilers this week too.
You should still read Murder on Orient Express though. There are lots of wonderful nuances and subtleties that enrich the mystery.
      Happy Reading!

Great video. My personal favorite of the Poirot mysteries if Evil Under the Sun. I also have a soft spot for the only one I ever legitimately solved (so far), The Murder of Roger Ackroyd!
I want to try a Tommy and Tuppence. I had never even heard of them until very recently.

I love Agatha Christie books! She is one of my all time favorite authors! And you are correct...David Suchet is Poirot! Endless Nights is one of my favorites. It's really eerie and different. It was written I believe in the '60s and Agatha Christie was adding in a little bit more creepier tones in her works. By the Pricking of My Thumbs (which is a Tommy and Tuppence---haha, I know you don't like;)) has that same element to it. Although it did have this long talking scene in it which dragged on with Tuppence and this old lady and I was wondering when it would end, but the ending is good. Pale Horse had that same feeling but I honestly don't remember that one as much. Honestly, Postern of Fate is my least favorite Agatha Christie. It stars Tommy and Tuppence in their retirement years and they are solving a case from way back. I honestly forced myself to read this book. I wouldn't read it because it's sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo boring. The storyline just dragged on and it's grrrrrrr. I love the Secret Adversary though and the rest of the Tommy and Tuppence books. I just love their adventurous spirits. You should give the Secret Adversary a try--it's more of a thriller and it takes you for a fun ride. Towards Zero is such a good book too---it was the first book I read with Superintendent Battle in it and I was tickled when later on I found out he was in Cards on the Table, The Secret of Chimneys, the Seven Dials Mystery (and that one is so good! Bundle is so adorable---she made me think of Nancy Drew!)...he's in another one but I can't remember. I just like his presence in the books and his "wood face" appearance. One of my favorite Poirot books is Dumb Witness. I was laughing at it alot because Poirot was too funny--lying about his identity while he was solving a crime. Some of my other favorites are: Three Act Tragedy, And Then There Were None, Why Didn't they Ask Evans (just love this one so much!), Partners in Crime, N or M, Big Four, The Body in the Library, Murder on the Links, The Mystery of the Blue Train. Some that I still need to read: Evil Under the Sun, the Mysterious Affairs at Styles (I saw the tv show with David Suchet), Curtain (don't wanna read Poirot's death and I saw the tv show again with David Suchet), The Moving Finger. Thanks for reading my long post! I just adore Agatha Christie's books! Happy Reading!

Wonderful! Well, I'm willing to give Tommy and Tuppence another try. Maybe it was just that one book that I didn't like.
Glad you agree with me about David Suchet!!
      Happy REading!

Agatha Christie had an immensely fascinating life. I didn't even scratch the surface in this video. Look up some more about her! She disappeared in a "fugue state", she had all kinds of mysterious things going on in her life.
      Happy Reading!

I love Agatha Christie but I struggle with Hercule Poirot. I do enjoy the mystery but find him arrogant. I prefer her independent novels like 7 dials mystery or Crooked house.

    • @LuminousLibro
      @LuminousLibro  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I'm glad to hear that you like Seven Dials Mystery! I still need to read that one!
About Poirot...I always figured, it's hard NOT to come off as arrogant when you are smarter than everyone around you. And yet, Poirot is endlessly patient and kind. He rarely gets frustrated with others' stupidity. The fact that others (readers or characters) sometimes perceive him as arrogant is part of the reality of his character.
      Happy Reading!
