  • Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi tells Artisan News that he was good friends with the late John Bonham, who as of today has been gone 32 years, and he recalled as per his book Iron Man, that the Led Zeppelin drummer was both good crazy and bad crazy - especially around motor vehicles.

Iommi is a great and humble man. He was one of the very few musicians who was secure & generous enough to go public with how great this new band (Zeppelin) was back when nearly everybody else was tight lipped & jealous as hell. He was a great friends with Bonham who was his best man at his wedding. Iommi's cancer treatment is going well!! Praying for him & RIP Bonzo...rock's greatest drummer.

He was a good mate and he NEVER let his fame go to his head. Bonham did what he did because he was Bonham - not because he was rich or famous.

+Anai Bendai Great to read your comments, as they reaffirmed my opinion of Bonzo: humble, down-to-earth, hated condescending people. My guess is when combined with John's famous/infamous temper, his emotions boiled over at the Rolls Royce salesman's condescending, presumptuous attitude, and he consequently drove the car straight out of the building LOL.
As great a drummer as he was, I remember watching an interview where the host suggested John was the greatest drummer, and it was very obvious when John immediately said "no" that he meant it. Not because he thought it would be good PR to say what he did, but because John's raucous, heavy drumming style belied a genuinely good, humble man.
Sadly, I think what largely contributed to John's death was he drank heavily because of ever-increasing misery, as he desperately missed not being home on the farm and spending time with his wife and family.

The biggest failure of whoever did not record Sabbath and Zeppelin jamming together in rock n roll history!!! They had portable cassette recorders back in the 70's. They coulda audio recorded the jam session. Just imagine someone having a Super-8 camera back then, and recording these legendary bands jamming together! It would have a billion hits on TH-cam if someone ever did such a great thing and recorded the Led Sabbath...or is that Black Zeppelin...jam session, and years later, uploaded it to TH-cam. One of the greatest shortcomings in rock n roll history!! They were mates, the two bands. They both created music that would evolve into what is modern day heavy metal. The bands both respected eachother. RIP John Bonham.

I can understand Tony's predicament. When I was young, I had a friend whose Dad had a hot V8. When my mate got drunk, he was hopeless behind the wheel of his Dad's car. After he nearly killed us a couple of times, I always insisted on driving after we had been to the pub. That gave me a love of fast cars. We are old now, but I still drive a fast car and love it! And I play Black Sabbath & Led Zeppelin frequently.

Back then, you had drummers like Moon, Ginger Baker, Mitch Mitchell, etc. that just did fills all over the place, all the time. Bonhams playing was more straightforward, better timekeeping, the best foot on a kick drum, and could play anything. Amazing really.

thing about bonham was his feel, and his accents, esp the bass drum. subtle things. he would throw in counter intuitive fills kinda like the beatles did w chord changes or jimi did with licks. they get your attention with this nostalgic sense of pattern and then throw it off ever so slightly to fuck with your head. all the greats have it, flirting at that line between the expected and unpredictable, deliver what the audience wants, but throw in a little extra to really set it off, a cosmic cake. lol

More like Black Sabbath fans, who think Sabbath is the only pioneer of heavy metal, when they didn't even pioneer the hard rock sound that got their group started.

Plant dogs sabbath a lot. Actually has said bonham wasn't a fan of sabbath's either. Guess it is possible to be friends with someone in a band u don't like. Or Plant is full of shit. I hear Bonham loved, or at least liked Supernaut by Sabbath. Makes sense since it sounds like Zep. Coverdale claims to be friends with Plant, which is funny given how much Plant seems to hate him. Ozzy butt dialed Plant once, so they are in touch.Plant has also bashed him a lot. Love Plant, but dude needs to chill perhaps dogging on Sabbath. Makes him look worse, but then in again, maybe Plant doesn't give a shit. I can somewhat admire that I guess.

My first hard rock album that l bought on my tenth birthday in 1972 was Paranoid.
Yeah, l know it came out in 1970.
Switching gears so to speak, l bought HAMMER OF THE GODS in its first edition.
I remember reading that Bonzo and his boy Jason going to a Rolls-Royce dealership to test drive a model.
The salesman scoffed at him about driving the car.
This infuriating Bonzo,he demanded to speak to the owner of the dealership.
Afterwards, when Bonzo and Jason came back l can't remember if he bought the car or not.
But he gave the salesman a dressing down and let him know, never judge a book by its cover.
Hopefully they fired the snide salesman.

In the image of the young John Bonham at 0:22 he looks rather like Richard Beckinsale, one of the main actors in the TV series Porridge. Beckinsale was also from the Midlands area of England and also died young, at 31 from a heart attack.
