  • Thanks Kelly for the Question/Suggestion. Something I haven't thought about since I retired. Fought with the answer the whole last year I worked.

    I was required to give at least a 30 day notice and no more than 90 days. I gave them 6 weeks notice. I didn't tell anyone at work up until then. I had a prescheduled vacation for my birthday and 31st wedding anniversary. I went in and filed the paperwork the morning of our anniversary while wife worked a half day, then we left town for the week. My cell phone blew up for a few days from people in shock, so I had it turned off. It's been a month and a half now retired and I am so relaxed. I have only forgotten what day it was 6 or 7 times so far. I knew it ended in -day though.

      Why do you worry if you’re required to give a 30 day notice you’re leaving it doesn’t really matter what the rules are anymore

    • @reversiontothemean6129
      @reversiontothemean6129 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @Jane5720 I wasn't worried, it was a requirement. Meaning I wouldn't be able to officially retire if I didn't follow the requirement. Meaning I'd have had to quit instead. It was a process, that's all.

      Good for you. I'd like to have done something similar but the closer it got the more excited I was. I was ready and couldn't wait to hand in my notice. Happy belated anniversary to you both and congrats on your recent retirement. I don't have much problem with the day it's the date that gets me. I couldn't tell you if it's the twelfth or 31st. I constantly have to look that up. I take a Bp pill every morning so the day I generally have down. Without it I'd be totally lost. Thanks and take care. Steve

    Good topic. I gave two months notice and my supervisor didn’t post an opening until two weeks before I retired. Then I heard through the grapevine that it took 11 months to find a replacement for me. I’m glad I retired and I believe I am healthier physically and mentally!

      My partner moved to my job and they normally post his for the plant. Probably a 3-4 month process with training and all. They decided to cut back instead. Now they only have one person a shift. Just how they are doing with that I haven't heard but I'm glad I don't have to deal with it. Take care. Steve

      40 years is a long time. Sounds like you got a decent offer to hang around for a few months. Nothing wrong with hanging in there if it benefits you I think. I didn't have the option. A little extra cash for retirement, gives you a little longer to plan and prepare while having your date set etc. Besides you get to start the year off "Voluntarily Unemployed".😄 Best of luck on your retirement. Steve you know what I have found interesting from my situation - Some of my friends havent talked to me much since retiring at 45. I attribute it to them likely not being happy with their work situation and an element of jealousy. Its odd but thats their problem, not mine. 👊👍👍🇺🇸

Food, cosmetics, medicine and industrial uses. The one I worked at was originally a Hercules Powder company. Made dynamite for awhile. Sometimes in old westerns you will see a Hercules Dynamite crate. Got bought by Ashland close to 20 years ago now.The plant itself has been there for 100 years now. I retired early on March 29, 2024. The final straw was when management had a meeting and they told everyone that if we don't like what they're doing, we can just walk out the door and they'll find someone else to replace us! They weren't talking to me, but I took it personally and began planning my retirement. It took 2 months. I gave them 15 days notice. They replaced me with a DEI hire, and he didn't work out. He didn't have the experience he said he did. They still haven't found a replacement and they're struggling making goals (I was their highest achiever). I see the job posting online and laugh. They should have treated me better! I went in last month and they asked if I would consider coming back part-time. 😂 Nope!

    I started silently prepping my team(s) around a year and a half (moving folk into positions, showing and letting staff do many of the things I normally just handled on-the-fly, etc.) before I actually announced that I was retiring in 3 months. Prep was key, and it allowed me to take the last month off as Annual Leave (had way to much annual and sick leave built up...) - I let them know I was available during that month IF they needed any input from me, but also told them, in aggregate, they were more than competent to handle anything that might come up. Thought about providing the phone number for dial-a-prayer as my future contact number (they would have expected nothing less...) but restrained myself... Retired and loving it!

I have talked to people who have given the proper notice for retirement (they don't have a pension) and the company decides to let them go within the next couple of days, even tho they stated that they plan to retire in 3 , 6 etc. months. Sad, but true.

    I was thinking about retiring in November 2025 when I turn 62. BUT, I may retire 6 months earlier in May when I'm 61 1/2 and start drawing some of my 401k before SS. I was going to use up all of my vacation time the first 5 months of the year. My work schedule is 2,2,3. 2,2,3 - 12.5 hour shifts. So I can take 2 vacation days and get 7 days off in a row. I've worked there for 25 years and I'll get 20 days vacation. So I could actually have 10 -7 day off periods if I want it that way. And retire in late May, the time I historically take my first week off for the year. So that means I won't be there that much those 5 months anyway. Like you, I'm just a warm body. But we shouldn't sell ourselves short because I always tell people that we are still a spoke in a wheel that wouldn't run without somebody in that position. Always enjoy your videos. I don't know how you go about it but it would really be cool if you did a live show every so often. I think I speak for all of your subscribers when I say we would really enjoy it. Sounds like a pretty good schedule for time off. I enjoy lives and have done a few in the past but it's been about a year since my last. Been thinking about another one just haven't got around to it. I retired at 55 and 3 days. I worked the 3 days just in case there could be any confusion with my date of hire. When you leave a government position, they will definitely check for any outstanding documentation and have the right to hold your pension check until any deficits are attended to . I gave a month's notice and colleagues due change when you're claiming your liberty again ( retirement ) to my experience.

    • @retirementcorner
      @retirementcorner  24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      They did the same with my pension also. Checked their books before sending the check. No problems here so it arrived right on time. I'd heard that things change with colleagues when you give notice and part of the reason I originally planned to just leave. Fortunately I didn't experience any. Take care. Steve

    Our agency recommends six months in order to proceed your documents and receive your pension on time. I don't recall but believe I give them 2 months and my pension arrived on time. I retired August 2 first check arrived 1 September. Department of Justice have mandatory retirement age 57, Eligibility was 20 years and age 50 or 25 years any age. Specialized education and appointments got age waivers. I could have continued until age 61 (my mandatory). But age 51 was right for me. I seen medical doctors work until 60.

      That works. It's different for everybody. Totally a personal choice and a lot of things play into it. The dynamics were different at my plant. The people were great and I enjoyed being around them for the most part. Loved the job I had. If I'd been at a smaller place or my giving a short notice would have left them in a bind I would have probably given a much longer one. Pretty much at the plant the next in line just moves up and they just shift people around. Sometimes they have to hire but usually not. Actually I found out they cut people and went to just one man a shift instead of two. Glad I don't have to deal with that. Take care and enjoy your retirement. Steve
