Chemistry Lab Tour! +Tips For Starting a Home Lab

I'll be moving to the USA for university soon (in fact by the time you see this video I will have already left) so I thought it's time for me to do a quick tour of the lab I have built over the past 5 years.
In addition to just being a lab tour, I did my best to provide some tips and guidance based on my experience that is aimed at helping out the new amateur chemist. These include waste disposal, chemical storage, what equipment to buy, safety, where to get certain chemicals and more. Some of these things aren't immediately obvious to the newcomer, and I hope they may help you avoid the same mistakes I did.
Amateur chemistry is a rather niche and not widely appreciated hobby. Should you choose to pursue it, you will no doubt meet resistance from government regulations, neighbors/peers who think you're up to no good, or even your chemiphobic parents. However, I can tell you that as long as you push through these challenges, you will be rewarded with some of the most exciting experiences out there, and at the same time gain a fundamental understanding about the microscopic world that surrounds us.

Beautiful Lab! Some additional suggestions I would also recommend an addition of railing to stop your reagents from falling down. I would also suggest obtaining a new shelf as it’s bowing under the weight of the particle board shelf that is the only thing keeping reagents separate,safe,secured from accidental failure of your shelving.
Also consider some more chlorinated hydrocarbons

hei, the first screenshot I saw from this video made me remember a very serious incident I witnessed some years ago at a lab university. They had tons of old chemistry regents
stuffed on CRAPPY SHELVES. The shelves were bending because of the weight of the reagents, like your shelf is bending. One day a shelf collapsed, reagents reacted, exploded and
set on fire the whole room. Even the glass of the reagents containers melted in this fire.
The contamination caused by all the spread out chemicals extended all over the building. The building stayed closed to students and researchers for more than a year until it was properly cleansed. Hope this story helps others !
My thoughts exactly! Please get a wire rack and put some vinyl sheets on the shelves, it'll hold everything without issue!
@@elyasstephens8242 my lab is make shift table made our of trash wood that has been amateurly nailed together. While I understood you concern. You don't need fancy stuff to be effective in the lab

Here in Poland chemicals are extremely easy to get. I'm starting an amateur lab in my attic.

How do you get lab grade chemicals? Everyone i know won't ship to a residence. Also you have to go through a process of them accepting you before they will ever ship anything out.

Nice lab, but i notice that the some of the chemicals on the shelves are too close to the edge.
You're right, but it was a risk I was willing to take due to limited lab space and also because it was not located near any fault zones.
@@unpairedelectron2886 I recommend using tape to protect them from falling. I did this same thing by making a tape that sticks on the sides but in the center, it's not sticky. I had duct tape, and I stuck it to the cabinet, and ant exposed sticky tape would have another piece of tape, so it doesn't trap any chemical bottles. I may make a video about it some time soon on my chemistry channel, the retards lab.
Are those squeeze bottles 250 or 500ml?

I’d love to make a chemistry lab up but is it legal for here in the U.K.? To do so?
Google it! From what I understand off the top of my head, the UK has stricter laws on solvents, reagents etc. At least compared to somewhere like the US where I live. For example in the UK I believe you may need to source many of your acids (such as sulfuric) via diy extractions/distillations via products such as drain cleaner.
With that being said, you don't want to break the law so I would just look up the laws for your jurisdiction. I personally think a government simply banning people from experimenting with amateur chemistry in general is a joke. I do understand there is always a safety liability and protocols which must be followed, the lack of such being a hazard to public health and safety, but banning chemistry simply out of chemophobia seems to be the MO nowadays.
Just another case of our relative freedoms being taken away.
So where would you get certain chemicals not commonly found on amazon or retailers and such?
Anything specific? I can try help you. A lot of foreign sellers ship to US. My favorites are www.onyxmet.com/, chemcraft.su/, www.smart-elements.com/wp/.

Literally any store. You can build a lab our of goodwill glass and Walmart chemi chemicals.
What would one do in a lab like this ?
I used it mostly to supplement my learning and also create compounds with unique and interesting properties (color, smell, etc.) The possibilities are endless.

What if an earthquake comes?
Gorilla the boss what if a jumbo jet falls out of the sky and crushes you?
Earthquakes only happen I'm certain areas and are rare. I for one have lived in Colorado for over 20 years and its never been a concern

What questions do you have? Are you having difficulty with equipment or chemicals?
Get some glass ware. Some chemicals. And a chemistry book
Why do this? Why be an amateur chemist?
Just like any other hobby. It's fun and rewarding to synthesize a hard to make molecule or a colorful compound. Plus it is a very versatile hobby you can pivot off of (electroplating, metal refining and casting, rocketry, fireworking, the list goes on.)

@@mutsuzawa All chemists start out as amateurs - some universities might not provide enough lab experience or (like in my university) discourage any creativity or deviation from strict pre-established protocols. This kind of lab would be perfect for those wanting to get more experience working with materials and following procedures that might be considered unworthy by their teachers.

What if an earthquake comes?
No earthquakes in the area. If you do live somewhere where it's an issue I suggest using bungee cords on the outer shelf to act as a barrier.
