  • It's really strange that after all this time I have never really shown my Neo Geo MVS Big Red arcade machine. I decided to take a few minutes and give a quick overview of maybe one of the finest arcade machines to grace American arcades in the 90s. So here it is, this is my Neo Geo MVS Big Red!

    Growing up, I don’t think I ever saw a Neo Geo in an arcade where it would be well cared for. They were always in a pizza place or convenience store and pretty beaten up. So, and this is just me, if I wanted an authentic feeling cab I’m not sure how much restoration I’d do :)

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh there are for sure people who prefer the rugged look. I don’t mind some dings and scratches here and there. Anything moderate or that impairs functionality though I correct.

    I actually bought my own Big Red after discovering your channel almost two years ago and realizing that owning an arcade cabinet was something actually attainable to a 30-something adult with some expendable cash and some free time. You may possibly remember me pestering you with a bunch of naive questions on twitter back in 2019 😅
    Anyway, thanks for the inspiration!
    My experience was similar to yours. Lots to fix up, lots to learn. I recapped my first monitor, replaced the flyback, powder coated the control panel and replaced the sticks, repaired the motherboard and swapped the BIOS, etc.
    It’s been a journey, but it’s been really rewarding. I’ve now been bitten by the arcade bug and this was quickly followed by more acquisitions... Donkey Kong, Sega OutRun, and a New Net City candy cab!

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That typically seems to be the case; I’ll just get one. Then, you find an excuse or a reason to get another. “It’s cheap and I know a lot now.”
      So on and so on.
      I definitely remember you Mike. I also see your posts from time to time in various groups and forums. Glad to see you doing well and enjoying the hobby:

    I was probably the only person in my city using a memory card at the arcade 😂 I ordered one from SNK because it was the only thing they sold that I could afford! It allowed me to beat Shodown 1 and 2, World Heroes 2, and Super Sidekicks 2, without an insane amount of quarters.
    Glad to finally see a tour of the Big Red! ....it's strange I didn't notice several other machines were shown before this one haha

    Awesome!! I’m waiting on a MVS-U4 which is effectively the Japanese candy version of this, so it’s great to see a tour of the machine.
    One thing of note with the memory card... I’m working on is a 1cc of every entry in the Metal Slug series, and the ability to start at any given level for practice purposes is huge. Grinding through the early game every time can get heavy, even with a game as fun as Metal Slug.
    I guess in the real world, when your quarters (or Yen, I guess?) were limited, being able to pick up where you left off last time must have been a cool feature too.

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah the memory card save is a life saver from that regard. I wouldn’t mind eventually getting a NeoSaveMasta for added space. You’re totally right though as far as picking up games even from a casual standpoint. It’s a really neat feature for older arcade hardware like this.

    A piece of striking beauty it is Scarlet. The Big Red Neo-Geo MVS units is the reason why I became a Neo-Geo buff and it all started in Paramus, NJ at a local Dairy Queen in 1990. They were being wheeled off the distributors truck and had absolutely no idea what they were at the time. The manager explained to me that it was constructed by SNK and you can play up to 4 games in one unit by switching them with a press of a button.
    At first, I was more fascinated by the technology of the cabinet. Then came the games. The first one out of them all was none other than Magician Lord. The game that started my love towards the Neo-Geo and a buff soon after that day. It's been never a dull moment since Scarlet. 8^)
    I posted this up on the Neo-Geo thread on Atariage.com for you. It's on post #25,566 for you to view. Thank you as always Scarlet. Always in the mood to see you in action. 8^)

I don't have a lot of nostalgia for western cabinets because I didn't have many of those around me when I grew up and I usually hate the controls (litteraly can't play with a bat top) but I'll make an exception for this one, there's just something about those Neo Geo cabs. I was able to grab a Big Red last year, but it is the South America model, red one, not blue one. Main differences goes as coinage being a single insert, no credit LED count, 21" RGB monitor instead of bigger one and a foot raiser around 3" high.
    It was in really bad shape, rot on lower foot, altered button panel, damaged monitor board and an old PC and jamma interface instead of the actual MVS arcade board.
    I'm in the middle of process of restoration this week. Since it has become quite difficult ans expensive to get a MVS board around here lately, I've decided to use a PC for mutigames. NeoGeo only ones, of course.
    Have changed the monitor to a CRT TV one, which will get signal from a VGA to component converter.
    Still deciding if I'm gonna use Batocera 15kHz or Groovy Arcade as the OS tho.
    In the future I intend to replicate a full cabinet, maybe using a 25/29" monitor and maybe use a MVS, sincr I got 3 games in cartridge for it.

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s a really good question, I don’t know. It seems like most of the SNK flyers offered titles and/or memory cards with the purchase of a cabinet. I’ll have to do some digging. That info has to be out there.

      @PabstOban 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ScarletSprites All I know is... if SNK were to start building 4 Slot MVS cabinets today, I'd buy one and find somewhere to put it. The only difficult thing would be the CRT display. I can't imagine anyone is still making them. Someone needs to invent the thing that is a CRT that isn't really a CRT. A flat screen that doesn't require a thick tube but essentially indistinguishable from the real deal. A pipe dream I know... but it probably could be done.

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly I’d just settle for a low lag 25” 4:3 monitor. No one is even making those then alone CRTs. I really thought with the cost of LCDs being as low as it seems today that someone would be able to capitalize on selling those.

    I know you prefer to do most restoration and repair work yourself or by someone you know closeby. But for folks that either lack technical prowess or like me suffer from chronic hand tremors that make it next to impossible to do work on electronics, are there any folks or small mom and pop type operations that do resto work that you'd recommend going to?

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not sure about actual cabinet woodworking type work although I’m sure if you called around someone out there would take your money. As for the actual technical repairs and stuff I usually have my go to as ArcadeCup.com or thearcadebuffet.com for monitors. Will at RetroHacks.net will also do some repairs and mods. He’s getting into arcade stuff more but is great with the console stuff already. Ken at irepairsega.com is the Sega master (and former employee). It costs more to ship things out and back, but these people actually know what they’re doing. You can also find individuals who do work on specific boards on KLOV.com
      So ultimately yes it’s more time consuming, annoying, and can be more expensive to send out but imo you’re better off knowing your stuff is actually being repaired or serviced properly.

      There's a lot that factors into what a cabinet is worth. Knowing that last part is going to be critical. Does all of it work? The board, the marquee, coin mechs etc. Overall condition of the cabinet will dictate pricing as well. The games (if any) are included can also bump the price. Is the monitor sharp and crisp (if original). Lastly, region can also factor into things. Arcade machines seem to be relatively hot right now. You can always list it and field offers.
