Stargate sg1 was just so cool. They really took you out on an adventure from planet to planet. Having you discover new civilisations and giving you some good action with adequate drama and some epic space battles (Apophis/Anubis/The Ori)
Give it a few more years, it'll get there. The Expanse is only 2 seasons in and it's up against series that have multiple seasons and finished their runs.
Personally I think Doctor Who can be bumped lower to make place for it, I watched seasons 1 through 12 of the modern series and found it OK, but greatly overhyped.
Stargate SG-1 was the first scifi show that I watched and loved as a kid, and Farscape is currently my all-time favorite show! And of course, I love Firefly and Serenity, Battlestar Galactica, Doctor Who, and Torchwood. Enterprise is my favorite Star Trek series.
@saltire: sounds like you're referring to Chrichton and Sun's disintegration as the ending. I have good news: there are 3 more hours of Farscape for you to watch. They made a miniseries a couple years later called Farscape: The peacekeeper wars.
Space: Above and Beyond, Lexx, Starhunter, Space Rangers, Space: 1999, Earth 2 deserved a mention too.....but overall, great list. I adore Babylon 5 and Farscape
I greatly enjoy Firefly and Star Trek, but B5 is my go-to Sci-fi series. There's so much going on and multiple story arcs weaving in and out of the episodic narrative. And to top it off, there are so many fun characters.

I've seen almost all of them, save for Lost in Space, Dr. Who and Buck Rogers. Some, I've re-watched more times than I care to admit. Enjoyed each and every one of them immensely.
Dark Matter, The Killjoys, Andromeda, The Orville - there are many. There was even a surprisingly solid one designed for kids in the 90s that never got an official release called Space Cases. Honorable mentions- Space: 1999, Buck Rogers, Blake's 7, Earth 2, Space Above and Beyond, The Starlost, Starhunter, Lexx, Space Precinct 2040. There's even a free one here on TH-cam that seems to be decent so far called Space Command.
Red Dwarf is an absolute riot. And I still miss Babylon 5. But I'm still left after all this time scratching my head as to reason the Farscape was cancelled
I could look it up and tell you, but I'll let you handle that. One person told me the shitacular cliffhanger was on purpose and then fans threatened to disembowel the creator if he didn't do a proper ending. Sorta like what happened to Evangelion.

Farscape deserves way more respect on this list. It had some of the most impressive character development, unique storylines, and cliche-defying writing in television, along with awesome world building and chemistry among the cast. My favorite show and just as good as B5. Those would be my top two picks.
Ah BSG, love that show. Would have wanted it to be #1 but the trendsetter and trailblazer that is Star Trek does deserve it (though I personally prefer Voyager over the original).
Aye you are right, the two of them did a few series of Stargate together as well. The series didn't quite know what to do with itself around then, but overall it did have a lot of scope.
Ah man, the first time I saw that scene I literally about pissed myself laughing. I put it on rewind about thirty times. The only thing I've rewound more is a scene with Laurel & Hardy where Ollie thinks Stan is in the bed next to him but its a gorilla and he says Stan should cut his toenails, then it gives him a kiss! Think I wore out the tape of that scene as a kid :D
Thank god, I thought you were actually going to put Discovery on this list for a second. That would have been a disaster. I would personally rank go with Battlestar as the best, then Babylon 5, then Firefly, then Star Trek (probably TNG or even DS9 for me). The Expanse and Farscape are the only other ones I've seen, and they absolutely deserves a spot.
"Lost in Space" was absolutely crap. It was a kiddie show. Now, "Land of the Lost" was awesome! Although a kiddie show too, it explored deeper themes.:)
Not all of these are technically space opera, just space sci fi. To qualify as space opera, a show should primarily be set in space. Dr. Who and SG-1 had more planetside episodes and time travel is more the forte of the former, while adventure the latter.
You had BSG, Firefly, Farscape, and Bab5. All my top favorites. would have liked some of them higher, but I'm good with this. Cause I do love Doctor Who and Star Trek too.
Babylon 5 should be number one for me, as much as I love all things Trek, B5 just did most things better. It has forever lived somewhat in the shadows (ironically) of Trek, but it is still very much worth a look for those who havn't seen it. The effects have undoubtedly aged at this point, but the brilliant characters and entwined narratives are still very much there. Firefly is up there however and nice to see Red Dwarf on the list.
Generally good, but I would have put Andromeda on the actual list and put Galactica a little bit further down because of its vague use of unexplained higher powers as a plot element
One season of firefly and it still made the list and rightfully so, that really speaks volumes. I cant even argue with anything here. Expanse is excellent, i loved this season of Star Trek Discovery, Stargate SG1 is one of my favorite shows every, Dr Who i respect but its not my type of sci fi, Battlestar Gallactica earned its spot, Id say the weak spot is that British show though ive never seen it so eh, Watch Mojo got it pretty much dead on for this list
Ok, Star Trek should definitely be around the top spots, even though I don't like it, it had a huge influence, however there's no way that BSG should be above DW, for me it's DW, ST, SG/BSG(tied) and Firefly next (sure it was great but didn't last long and didn't have an impact like the others)... There's my opinion, now feel free to have me for it, I don't really care just wanted to put it out here :)
The fact that y'all continuously ignore Deep Space Nine and still, on it's 25th anniversary haven't done a Top 10 episodes list for it just shows how full of it y'all are.
Hit and miss. A show's longevity hasn't as much to do with quality as people like to believe. Firefly proved that. Glad B5 was on there, and pleasantly surprised Farscape made it too. Tried Red Dwarf, but that's 3 hours of my life I'll never get back. There's other shows I think are are more deserving to be on the list.
Nice list i would make a different list with parodies and stranger series like Red Dwarf though, since it is an all time list i would Definately put Space 1999 up there and ofc the all time favourites Star Trek TOS has to be No1 and also TNG should take a place in the top spots,as for Battlestar Galactica it is the best newer series out there and the old one was cool as well for its time i would definately put those 3 in the list at any time
I hated the whole religious side of DS9. Turning Gul Dukat from a morally grey villain into the literal antichrist pissed me off. Really jarring to put that stuff in Star Trek
I adore BSG. But I can see why they went with Star Trek. Everything we love about BSG came from the ground Star Trek first did, like social commentary. Except for Doctor Who, pretty much everything listed are Star Trek's conceptual grandchildren.
BSG failed to stick the landing, If they had it would be an unarguable #1. The blew it in three ways. They broke ambiguity surrounding the mystical elements and started throwing literal unambiguous deus ex machinas in the mix. This makes the faith of the cylons less intresting as they just mechancialy found the correct answer and makes all the polythestic and atheist characters wrong and dumb. The final 5 was a mess, clearly not planned, such an ass pull broke all sorts of other stuff. The ending was a hot mess of nonsense hiding behind a truly incredible battle. They also missed a trick by dropping the direct connection to our past. They could have made it ambiguous if our earth is next in the cycle or first in the cycle, that would have opened up all sorts of design space. The expanse is another one that has the makings of a champion, having read the books if season 3 is at least good season 4 manages not to be awful then 5 and 6 are truly nailed and they dont fuck it with a bad ending it could be the best in the genre.
Star trek over BSG as Scifi drama... not even in your dreams with all due respect toward the great first. Battlestar then Star Trek and then all the rest
deep space 9 was a rip off of B5 originally. strazynski pitched B5 to Fox who refused it then suddenly came out with their own space station themed star trek a few months later. Although it went on to be its owon thing, its shady start could be why itrs not on Mentions
It is a pity that DS9 had to start off as a shameless ripoff...that continued on to have some suspiciously similar arcs like the hidden menacing foe of the Shadows/Dominon, and a prototype advanced attack ship Whitestar/Defiant to deal with it, and a leader that died and ascended to join higher beings Sheridan/Sisko. Strazynski did extend an olive branch though by having Majel Roddenberry guest star in an episode giving crucial foreshadowing. So while he may still resent the shit out of Paramount/FOX or whoever was in charge of the franchise, I think he made peace with the franchise itself and its creators.
If it is the Anime you are talking about then you are wrong. It have 4 OVA´s, 2 movies and i believe it is 101 episode series. One of the best space operas ever made.
Yep. Just waiting for the next episode or two to come out and then I can binge watch the episodes. I do hope it comes somewhere close to how good the original was. My fear is that it is only currently scheduled for something like 12 or 24 episodes. I hope that is just the first season and they are not trying to cover everything in those few episodes.
Anyienk9 You should do your own research. It IS an OVA. The production committee couldn’t get the funds for a TV anime, so they made it an OVA. Besides, it’s 110 Episodes, has 3 movies, and a 52 episode prequel series.
Farscape and the Expanse should be higher on the list, Stargate Atlantis should be on this list in place of Stargate SG1 and Star Trek Deep Space Nine should be on here over Star Trek the original series.
Personally, I think DS9 tops All the other Treks. It easily had the best characters, storylines and had deaths used in context of the story that had meaning.
How can Firefly, one season, and the REMAKE of Battlestar Galactica be better than Babylon 5? False. Also, the new BSG series took a nosedive after Season 2.5.
Allen Knott can't speak for BSG but Firefly is just that damn good. And that's coming from someone who thinks B5 is one of the greatest TV series ever. You just have to take your hat off to a show that managed to create such likeable and interesting characters and sci-fi world in just 13 episodes. Other shows have half a dozen seasons and don't reach that level.
Wurzelknecht, I'm a fan of Firefly. I agreed with you that the characters are like able and interesting. But the problem is not that. It is that Firefly never got to finish it story. So why is Babylon 5, a complete story, ranked lower than a incomplete one? Answer it shouldn't be. Firefly in no way or shape is better than Babylon 5. It is just not. Do, I think that fair to Firefly? No. But it also not fair to Babylon 5 or any other series to penalized them because they are more successfully in term of number of episodes. Firefly and Star Trek are also the two series that original got cancel. Star Trek had been brought back numerous times and have a universe of material. Firefly, as of right now, doesn't. It have a handful of comics and one-movie (which have some story flaws). I'm not saying that Firefly is bad, but is can't be better, in my opinion, the greatest Sci if series ever? No one is ranking the original series BSG and it didn't even get a mentioned. It have more episodes, and a far more successfully "spin-off" than Firefly does. Hell Firefly, doesn't even have a video game to the best of my knowledge. I will said Firefly is the best sci if series to get cancel but again, you can't penalized other series for not getting cancel.
@@ak102986 Firefly was a actual rip off of the 1998 anime and much earlier manga Outlaw Star. The first few episodes are honestly truthfully almost exactly the same. I always thought this, but rumors say that's why the production company killed it. Outlaw Star had big japanese bucks behind it, if it had found out giant lawsuit
Ok I'll give you Star Trek, Doctor Who and Red Dwarf; but bloody Firefly and Battlestar Galactica ahead of Babylon 5? Na. B5 was imo, before Breaking Bad came out, the greatest tv series ever made. All sci-fi fans should watch it.
This is a good list. But I have one question: What is the term "space opera"? From what I know of the word, "opera," it had to do with classical singing from the likes of Pavarotti.
"The term has no relation to music, but is instead a play on the terms "soap opera" and "horse opera" Space opera is a subgenre of science fiction that emphasizes space warfare, melodramatic adventure, interplanetary battles, chivalric romance, and risk-taking."
Sisco was the best captain imo. He was the only one willing to put morality aside to get shit done (how he got the romulans into the war, as the best example)
Glad to see some of my favorite shows like The Expanse, the Stargate franchise, BSG, Firefly, Doctor Who and Star Trek on this list.

Strazynski did extend an olive branch though by having Majel Roddenberry guest star in an episode giving crucial foreshadowing. So while he may still resent the shit out of Paramount/FOX or whoever was in charge of the franchise, I think he made peace with the franchise itself and its creators.
I genuinely don't see why The original series is so popular. DS9's the best.
@@darksidepvp Why, if it went and did its own thing, would you or anybody refer to it as a "rip off"? Isn't that essentially nosensical?
Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
But, it’s an OVA, so it wouldn’t count...
I still need to check that one out. Though the re-make being released soon looks like it will be good. I'm a long time fan of Space Battleship Yamato.
If it is the Anime you are talking about then you are wrong.
It have 4 OVA´s, 2 movies and i believe it is 101 episode series. One of the best space operas ever made.
Jon Mcgee The first two episodes are already out.
The Expanse should be way higher up that list is not for the fact that its one of the newer series.
BSG was brilliant, but bittersweet due to its unfortunate ending.
Thanks for putting B5 at 5 :)
I'm starting to watch The Expanse, so I can't say I'm a big fan yet.
It gets better once you get more avasarala moment
Stargate should be #1, followed by BSG and Firefly.
I like Dr. Who as much as everyone else, but how is it an space opera?
Its cheesy, melodramatic, and full of music. Very much an opera set in space.
Ahh battlestar galactica on the thumbnail, what a good eay to grab my attention
yup!
* inhales *
*fascinating.*
DS9 has way too many good episodes to count
God I love farscape it's one of my favorite muppet shows
You crazy? Farscape on 9? What the frell....
1. Star Trek
2. Farscape
3. Babylon 5
4. Stargate
and the rest
Still needs the one that started it, Dr Who, in any order except no 1
#1: Babylon 5
Star Trek, Babylon 5, BattleStar, and then FireFly...
OK Star Trek fans will like always disagree, but Red Dwarf is objectively the best.
Doctor Who Is the only SIFI show I like
The Orville needs at least honorable mention if not top 10. It's rated 8.0 on IMDB. bygones!
1 to 10 should all be BSG
I've GoneAway never heard that before. I will need to do some research.
The only slot for their picks that's agreeable is #1
Not even a mention of Lexx
List does not have Babylon 5 as number one. List is objectively wrong.
Ok I'll give you Star Trek, Doctor Who and Red Dwarf; but bloody Firefly and Battlestar Galactica ahead of Babylon 5? Na. B5 was imo, before Breaking Bad came out, the greatest tv series ever made. All sci-fi fans should watch it.
what about DARK MATTER?
after 20+ years i find out my dad watched star trek on TV when it was airing and he never told me. SMH
Farscape is number 1 for me. Doctor who is number 2.
Dark Matter? The Orville?
Farscape is number 1!!!!
Blakes Seven
Power Rangers In Space and Lost Galaxy
nothing is better than stargate
Raumpatrouille - Die phantastischen Abenteuer des Raumschiffes Orion (1966)
Space 1999 (1975)
Pirx kalandjai (Adventures of Pirx, 1972)
:)
Battlestar Galactica is #1
bears. beets. you know the rest
This is Galatica Actual
This is a good list. But I have one question: What is the term "space opera"? From what I know of the word, "opera," it had to do with classical singing from the likes of Pavarotti.
"The term has no relation to music, but is instead a play on the terms "soap opera" and "horse opera" Space opera is a subgenre of science fiction that emphasizes space warfare, melodramatic adventure, interplanetary battles, chivalric romance, and risk-taking."
If the overarching storyline is epic, then they're considered space opera. And with a lot of these... they were pretty epic.
DS9 and TNG are better than the original Star Trek series by far. Not that the original is bad but it pales in comparison to those successors.
Agreed.
Perhaps, but without the original series none of the other series would have ever come into existence.
Sisco was the best captain imo. He was the only one willing to put morality aside to get shit done (how he got the romulans into the war, as the best example)
Agreed. But you misspelled it. It's Sisko not Sisco.
Bobfromjanitorial and don't forget that Sisko punched Q in the face
