I built one of these shortly after this video came out about 6 years ago. It's served as both a bench for additional guests at my dining table as well as a coffee/side table, and its still strong as ever. Great project to get the kids involved with too since the assembly is just glue and brad nails.
That bench came out looking sweet, and it was great seeing you guys again. Also like how your lens really shines shooting outside with the extra depth.
Such a cool way to use plywood - also a labor of love! Good tip about the finish too: my brain knows end grain soaks up more but it still surprises me how much every time!
So fun to meet you guys at the show. It was fun to see the video of a project you've seen live. Thanks for making the effort to come to the show. I had a blast. #skiatook2017
A great weekend in Oklahoma. The weather was perfect. Watching all the cool stuff going on was awesome. I'm already looking forward to next year. Oh, and very nice on the build.
So simple but so elegant. I like how you integrated the box joints (kind of) in just by having different lengths. Crazy you used a while quart of poly!
Awesome idea very cool project. I thought it's funny how you and Zac used hand tools and James used his power tool just at the end lmao. It's great to see the three of you doing a project together. Awesome video.
I would have loved to have gone, just a horrible time of the year for me to take time off from my day job. Looks like you all had a blast. Sorry I missed it.
Really cool Project! Rather than cutting the top pieces short and long, could you have staggered them left and right? Then used alternate short and long legs on either side? That should give you a longer bench and fewer cuts. Just a thought.
I'm not a carpenter I just landed here through TH-cam recommendations. The best part I see here is, you guys great attitude to respond to each & everyone's comments positively. Hats Off team! Great going! Like to know, as a beginner interested in carpentry who doesn't know anything about it (zero knowledge with tons of interest & passion), want to learn from basics, any good links you recommend please?
Awesome and simple build. I used the same method when I made my standing desk. Even with some guides when glueing up the layers, it's almost impossible to get the surfaces flat, you can see it in my video. Strong joint nonetheless. Great video too!
I like this. One thing I might have done (although harder for sure) is to cut the strips from the full 8' ply. That way you could line up the leg grain with the top grain. What do you think?
Nice build! I'm trying to convince the wife to buy me a tablesaw. I've looked at a ton of these "worksite" saws, but I can't settle on one. Do you have any suggestion? I'm spoiled because when I work in my neighbors shop, I get to use his Powermatic beast.
OriginalAxepack I really like my Dewalt jobsite saw. The fence can't be beat in that class of saw. I don't have the flexvolt version (mine's corded), but I couldn't be happier given the size.
I'm no woodworker - but wouldn't it have been easier to cut the top/longer strips all the same length and just alternate them like - first layer left leg short, right leg full length; second layer left leg full length, right leg short?
If the top pieces were all the same, the alternating lengths of the legs would cause the legs to all be uneven on the other end. It would also leave no way to interweave them with the top strips like they did.
Very cool - I love plywood strip creations. You can make so many cool geometric forms using this technique. I made a table with half plywood strips, half concrete, but unfortunately it was before I started filming my projects. (some pics here, if interested: goo.gl/photos/e8Tq9CnW6C8Z6oeC7) Seeing this makes me want to work on a couple other ideas for plywood strips that are stirring in my head.... well done. I like the idea of using an electric hand planer. I did it completely differently, by making the legs and top as separate pieces with "fingers", making them less than 13" wide so I could run them all through the thickness planer, and after planing, gluing them together like a finger joint. This didn't work so well, because the pressure of the clamps on the glue up somehow resulted in fingers that were too small, so I had to hand sand the insides of the fingers to make the legs and top fit together. Talk about a pain...I like your way better.
Clever idea of using stacked plywood this way. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent work guys

Likewise!
Thanks man!

I love it. I know that most don't like the plywood edge, but I find it rather attractive myself.
It can definitely look cool!
That bench came out looking sweet, and it was great seeing you guys again. Also like how your lens really shines shooting outside with the extra depth.
Likewise, it was great hanging out again--so glad you remembered to bring your guitar!
Thanks Caleb! That Neutral Density filter on the lens really helps me use the low aperture outside.
Me too! Really enjoyed listening to you play, was way better than I expected.
Thanks!

Thanks y'all! It was some thirsty plywood. P.S. when are you two coming on our podcast?
Crafted Workshop any time!! we'd love to be on the show!! you just let us know when 👍

It was awesome to have a chat with you while you guys were building that awesome table... I'm definitely going to have a booth next year!!
Likewise Jake! Thanks.
So much fun! this was one sweet weekend!
Wood By Wright did you actually use the power tools??? lol
it could have been a lot hotter. LOL
LOL they were cordless it was OK. right?
Your planer was NOT cordless from the looks of it... I watched you using it!
LOL I forgot about that part! oh well, you caught me!
Nice. Really simple but very cool.
Thanks Jed!
Awesome! Love this...simple, quick, and fun to build!
Thanks!
awesome build, i hate i missed this one , great job
Thanks Sterling, it was a lot of fun! Hopefully you can make it next time.
Interesting to see someone using an electric plane, don't see that very often. Table looks great man!
Yea, it was a super handy tool!
Nice!
+Jon Peters Art & Home thanks Jon!
So simple but so elegant. I like how you integrated the box joints (kind of) in just by having different lengths. Crazy you used a while quart of poly!
Thanks Bruce! Yea, the table was SUPER strong. It sucked up the poly.
Awesome idea very cool project. I thought it's funny how you and Zac used hand tools and James used his power tool just at the end lmao. It's great to see the three of you doing a project together. Awesome video.
Hah, I didn't notice that until you said it :)
Hah, too true Thom! Thanks.
Nice! I'm impressed by the amount of finish that absorbed!
Thanks Michael, it was crazy!

Me too, Chad! It was an awesome time.
Nice!!
Thanks Travis!
Plywood furniture can look awesome! As with the coffee table you made!
Thanks!
That was different and simple. Kinda cheap to make as well but still looked good!!
+Russell Anderson thanks! Definitely cheap to make too.
Really cool Project! Rather than cutting the top pieces short and long, could you have staggered them left and right? Then used alternate short and long legs on either side? That should give you a longer bench and fewer cuts. Just a thought.
Yup, that should work too!
I thought that looked familiar. Thanks for the video guys. It was nice meeting you in Skiatook. @MyHoney'sHandmade.
+slayerhawk1972 nice! Thanks for stopping by the booth.

looks good Johnny and looks like that's a fun time over there lot of tubers there huh?🍻
Thanks Joe, it was a ton of fun!
Crafted Workshop sounded like it was.🍻

Thanks, it is definitely nice and sturdy!
great idea, going to build a tv-stand like this :-)
+Nicolas De Clercq awesome, have fun!
nice video, seems like an interesting event.
Thanks, it was fun!
Very cool. I have a project in mind, where I will be using this technique/styling for a cabinet top.
Thanks!
Looks cool! Bet that weighs a ton but solid as all get out!
It was pretty heavy but not too bad. Thanks!
I like this. One thing I might have done (although harder for sure) is to cut the strips from the full 8' ply. That way you could line up the leg grain with the top grain. What do you think?
That would have been cool!
So good! I'm doing a video on this for sure!
Have fun!
Nice guys.. I like the lamination.. Looks like a sweet event too.. I'd love to be able to get out there and meet some of you guys..
Thanks Steve!
Cool design! Simple and strong. Where does the finished piece end up?
We raffled it off at the event!
I ve done the same proyect but in bigger size, do you think that an oil finish would work well on the plywood grain?
Sure!
The link to purchase and plans is broken
Here you go: craftedworkshop.com/store/diy-plywood-coffee-table-bench-plans
looks really cool I made a similar one for outside except I missed out some of the slats in the top. it rains a lot where I live. 😀
That makes sense! Thanks!
would you reccomend the table saw as a full time saw?
Depends on your use, but you could definitely get a lot done with it.
love it! but you need to make one out of pallet wood next 😉
+Jackman Works I'll leave that up to you! 😜
Nice
Thanks!
I built a bench just like that - except it is more segmented hardwoods - video should be out sometime next week.
+Shogun-Jimi sounds cool!

Agreed, I love the DEWALT fence. I had it prior to getting the SawStop and I was very happy with it. Just get the one with the stand.
Liked and subbed
+oobaka1967 thanks!

It wouldn't be uneven if the short leg went under the top piece, and the longer leg went on the side of the top piece.
I think that would work too.
👍
🤘
Nice work, glad I got to see it in person being made. Maybe next time i can will the raffle.
Thanks! Maybe next time... :)

its the poor man's dovetail
Basically!
Hey this project looks kinda like the bench design that i sendt you
I made it by myself thanks to Wood Prix's plans. I think it's the best way to learn how to build that.
Nicw
that would be an expensive hobby
Doesn't have to be. Start with a few tools and build your collection as you make more things.
First
(might wanna recheck that claim ;) )
Geeksmithing nope... first
Make Easy was one minute before you on my screen ;)
the only person that knows for sure is Johnny LOL.
I don't care, it's all engagement in TH-cam's eyes! Keep arguing :)
Nice
