  • The Barn Owl holds a unique and mysterious allure for Irish people. It is one of our most iconic birds, and it is easy to see why this is the case. Here we provide an intimate view of this special species, showing why they are so popular in Ireland and some of the conservation efforts on behalf of BirdWatch Ireland to help protect their population. The production of this video is funded by the Heritage Council and Dublin Zoo, thanks to Crossing the Line for providing footage of breeding Barn Owls in Ireland and to Crow Crag who produced the video.

    I had a pair nest right above my front door this spring in Arizona. I was able to set up cameras all over the place and watch them raise their young. Such a fascinating beautiful creature. I felt like I was the luckiest human on earth!

    I saw one two nights ago flying through our yard. It was amazing as I always loved this bird but never thought I'd ever see one.

    Barn Owls make two calls. One is the loud jagged piercing screech. They use that when flying at night to make sure they do not fly into each other in the darkness. "I am right here" they say to each other at a safe distance. The other call is a deep soft whooooo. It starts very, very soft, then rises loud, and then back to very, very soft again. They make that call when perched in a tree. They find each other in the forest calling back and forth with the soft, soft whooooo. The whoooo starts and finishes so softly the human hearing cannot hear it, but they can. They can hear the sound of a mouse gnawing on a dry grain from up in the sky.

    Don't know the situation in Ireland but here in Britain it's the development of wearhouses and house being built on green belt land that is the major problem here. It's so sad that when I was in my 20s there was more green belt land than there is now. Also barns being converted into house . But on a plus most farmers and people are encouraging barn owls by putting up owl boxes .

    What a beautiful film. The young bird stayed very quiet when being ringed. Can barn owls be introduced in any part of the country? I’m thinking of West Donegal, where I haven’t seen them, though they might be there!

      Hi Sean, thank you for your comments. It is a very good question, but we don't feel there is a need to introduce Barn Owls to particular areas, juvenile Barn Owls will disperse long distance from their natal sites, and therefore they can reach and colonise any parts of the country, of most benefit to Barn Owls would be improving the habitats and where there are suitable conditions (suitable habitat and nest sites) Barn Owls will colonise. Barn Owls are increasing in certain parts of the country and although they remain scarce in the north west and indeed in Donegal hopefully this will change over time and providing suitable conditions is the best way of ensuring this is the case

      @@johnlusby2886 Thanks John. It makes sense that they would spread naturally. I suppose I’m just thinking of myself and wanting to have such a beautiful bird in my back garden!
      One evening a few months ago I was walking along the seafront road in Raheny, Dublin, when an owl flew down and perched on a small tree about 15 feet from me. Not sure what type of owl it was but it was mostly white, with some grey feathers. It just sat there looking at me. It was such a beautiful moment.

    There is an owl that lives in Taney Church Dundrum
    Not sure what breed, it only comes out at night and is hard to see
    around March it makes a lot of racket, for few weeks, then you never hear it after that

    Magnificent creatures. Unfortunately, I see one or two a year on the road side following a collision with a car.

    • @johnlusby2886
      @johnlusby2886 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Gwen, yes sadly Barn Owls are very susceptible to vehicle collisions, we have been working with Transport Infrastructure Ireland to develop mitigation measures to try and reduce the numbers of birds killed on roads, and these measures are now being implemented on new road developments, so we hope this will make a difference
