Hi Christen, on the cabinets I used a medium grit sanding sponge to give the surface a little bit of texture. Mostly it just took off a little dust from the clear coat. It definitely helped because any areas I cheated on I had a little more trouble with the paint sticking. Once you get a very thin coat on it sticks great to itself. :) I hope that helps!!
