The tape used to bulk up the slugs did two things. First it allowed better engagement with the rifling but it also squeezed the bundle of wires together much tighter and helped to keep them from being shoved out of the insulation.

I haven't finished the video but a cool idea might be to score or split the cable jacket like a sabot.
when prepping the slugs maybe a lil epoxy down the tube to keep the flechettes from immediately separating?

I’ve worked as an electrician for about 3 years. Came across a lot of short pieces of 4/0 like this. Always had the idea but wasn’t able to test it myself. Glad to see you guys try it out!
Pro tip: A peice of 500 copper THHN about 3 in Long is better than wrapping your fist around a roll of quarters.
What amazes me is after all these years you still manage to find new things to accelerate. The education is really valuable during projectile shortages. I really do enjoy watching the slow mo.

The longer range and accuracy of a slug, that shatters into the tearing effect of a multi projectile shell. I love it, but I'd hate to be on the wrong end of a gun loaded with these.

I used to know a guy that did his own custom shotgun loads for shits and giggles... my favorites were probably then 3.5 inch magnum shell stuffed full of penny's, and the solid steel slugs he turned on the lathe. Fun times...
Edit: Oh yeah he also shoved a bunch of roofing nails in a 10 gauge.

it would also be interesting to see what would happen if you soldered the tip. theoretically it could help keep it together in flight, add a little forward weight to stabilize it, yet disintegrate on impact....
@Vidar D It definitely would help with the factor of over penetration. The slug would stay together at midrange without peppering surrounding area with shot or buckshot. this would effectively extend the range of a shotgun around the neighborhood
I have some of that cable from when I was an electrician .That's where I got the name flex bender(rookie name,long story). I keep the the cable for use as a heavy baton .

That was awesome! I was amazed at how well you guys had it failed in by the end, with a little bit of electrical tape to add just enough to the width and a rifled slug barrel. I think that is an outstanding option for a homemade flechette rounds.

However, I am pretty sure that you guys understood what I was trying to say about it starting out at failed attempts but then the addition of an electrical tape and rifled slug barrel and became a quite formidable defense weapon if needed. In response to your "thanks Brian!" comment, you are very welcome. I did really appreciate watching the demonstration of that improvised round and the process of improving it. I do not currently own a scattergun, so I will not be loading those rounds do defend my own home, however, I do have friends who do. So, I will share this with them. Thanks again.

If you don't have access to such high duty cables, just get 19 short nails, cut heads off of them, pot them in wax or weak glue just to have them hold cylindrical shape + lower turbulence at the front and wrap it in electrical tape to fit the barrel.

For air rifles, we're restricted to 12 ft-lbf, because that law was written before we went metric, and I've seen a tin of 8.6 gr .177 pellets, so that's approximately US BB size and that means a muzzle velocity of ... how the hell do you work this out in imperial? Ugh. 12 ft-lbf = 16.2698 J, and that's 8.75 gr = 0.56699 g @ 239.56 m/s = 785.965 fps. There. One BB pellet at slightly more than .45 ACP muzzle velocity is legal. Can you hit some things with BB shot at that speed, please?

If it’s longer than the wire it will begin to cover the end partially. That may hold them together longer.

It could almost act like an APCR round, shedding the casing upon striking the target
I feel like one could make a light bond with soft wires by bundling/twisting them together and heating them up in a heat treat oven. Possibly even press them into a form of some kind to give it more of a bullet or slug shape. This would leave it ready to seperate on impact while retaining the weight of a solid slug.
Tungsten is very hard. I would be worried about barrel damage.

It's not the banjo in free-fall that's the problem, nor keeping your fingers warm enough to play the thing once you're under canopy, it's just that any 'twanging' noises at all while you're hanging from a parachute, don't really aid concentration. Sax is far better.
As for telling your team that 'their landing area is also a live range with 'scientifically chosen ideas on test' . . . Well, you may have to bribe them with ice-cream : )

I have developed and tested both ways. The desire for this video was to have them fly whole and come apart on impact. When Jeff said he saved the best for last that is EXACTLY what I was hoping for and envisioned. Now the fun part is trying to replicate the results consistently.

I am curious as to how they would perform if they were packed in as an aerodynamic slug with longer ones as a core and shorter ones on the outside, making a cone kinda like the old russian rocket pods for aircraft. Would that improve flight stability and separation on impact, or decrease the integrity upon firing so it all just scatters out the barrel?

That is exactly what I did. I sent him 30 of the rounds to test with. I have a bowling pin that took one perfectly and I need to get xrayed.

For the lovers of the Second Amendment I adore you if you can afford to get the equipment to make your own ammunition cartridges be they brass aluminum or Steel casting your own bullets making your own primers and powder please while it is possible to get the stuff start acquiring it if you can afford it and if you can do it as a group even better
reloading stuff is mostly sold out due to covid shortages unfortunately
I am thinking on the same lines.And it is good to start early,as there is quite a learning curve.My next skillsets is something I have been putting off because of the sensitivity of the compound,percussion caps.Then primers,if the necessity is still there.
Primers are the hard part. Note that you don't want to use mercury fulminate, the mercury infiltrates the brass and weakens it greatly, making it unsafe to reload.
Working on it. You can manufacture your own black powder very easily and very cheaply so older firearma types are always a good option too.

I wouldn’t say the test on the ballistic gel was less than satisfactory look just a millisecond after the main slug hits there’s like three of those cables that fly through the gel, that’s still pretty darn deadly man, and devastating!
If OG would hold his jaws just right like Danny and Brianna do he might have hit something with these. Seriusly these have potential with a bit more twerking.
