I wish the reviewer had done their basic homework. Arrow Video’s upcoming 4K UHD release of Inglourious Basterds utilizes the same 2K digital intermediate as previous editions but features a new encode. This new encode may address certain artifacts present in earlier releases, potentially offering a marginal improvement in picture quality. However, significant enhancements in visual quality are unlikely without a complete remaster from the original film elements, which would require substantial effort and director Quentin Tarantino’s involvement. As such, while Arrow’s release may offer slight improvements, it is not expected to dramatically surpass previous UHD editions in terms of picture quality. Collectors and fans may find value in Arrow’s edition due to its exclusive extras and collectible items, including new interviews, visual essays, and a 60-page booklet.
I am a huge Tarantino fan - my favourite film of his is once upon a time in Hollywood, I love pulp fiction, reservoir dogs, Django unchained, actually all of his films I will be honest though my all time favourite Tarantino related film is from Dusk til Dawn. Great episode - thank you.
Arrow said they used the same transfer. It does seem Arrow re-encoded it, though. Most likely through fidelity in motion and added better packaging and special features.
Also, these transfers are apparently the same, no clue how they look different, there’s no official confirmation anywhere from arrow that there’s been any enhancements to the arrow transfer.
Better encode, higher bitrates. There is a lot more wiggle room in contrast and color tweaks than you think when it comes to "OMG the same transfer!" Plus that 4K was needlessly slandered by one guy with a bad set up then a bunch of bandwagon jumpers.
@creategreatness8823 The first 4K release is genuinely bad. It's too bright and washed out, you can even see the difference on the phone pics he took. It looks like the new 4k will be closer to how the film is supposed to look.
I messaged Arrow a week after this release was announced and asked them if they were doing a new transfer and the answer was no so both are completely identical except for the packaging.
@@creategreatness8823um... no. Most 4ks are not 2k upscale. Just because companies try to get away with it doesn't make it the norm. All the best 4ks of the year typically natively scanned at 4k or higher. Most collectors can tell the difference. Blues Brothers, jaws, vertigo, amityville horror, seven...etc. go play them and then put a 2k upscale disc in.
@@jeffro9252 I'll concede that I should have said "many" instead of "most" Basically, from 2000 to the late 10s...most films were finished(meaning VFX work, digital color grading) at a 2K resolution, with a 2K Digital Intermediate. They only exist in their "Finished forms" in those 2K DIs. So ANY 4K made of those films can ONLY be a "4K Upscale of the 2K DI" 4K rendered CGI and 4K DIs, or films completely finished on celluloid(Like Nolan films and a few others) are "True 4K" but most films shot or finished in the "standard of the time" at 2K resolution across the board are in fact 4K upscales on their 4K discs. Nowadays the standards is higher for more or less 4K across the board, but for nearly 20 years that was NOT the case for films. Many were shot digitally at 4K or less and almost anything finished with a DI was done at a 2K resolution, even if that 2K was then put "back to film" that loss of detail and info can never be reclaimed. Jurassic Park was shot on film, and "Finished" on celluloid, but all of the CGI shots show their loss of detail on the 4K disc because those shots were scanned at basically 1K resolution, and the CGI was rendered at about that level. So even your amazing 4K of Jurassic Park has all of the VFX shots existing as glorified upscales.
Thanks for the overview! I thought the original release looks excellent on a OLED in HDR10+ so unfortunately I'll pass on Arrow. Favorite movie of his would be Inglourious Basterds or Django Unchained. I wish he would drop his stupid 10 films limit so that we could get more films from him, especially odd stuff like his Star Trek, James Bond, and Luke Cage films.
Appreciate your video -- tho would suggest using timecode if your gonna bury the lede for us Johnny-come-lately types.... Didn't stay for the entire 25 mins -- can someone just comment back if this is any different than the previous 4K release :)
Hateful Eight is essential. But did you see the 4 hours? I have it on Blu Ray and actually re-watched it this holiday season and the actual running time is about 10-15 minutes longer than the original. You already lose 4x 6 minutes in beginning and end credits plus a minute on review of the previous episode. The extra footage is mainly longer dialogues which is nice but if you don’t know the movie out of your head it is not a substantially different video experience.

Will have to check the back of the booklet when i get this to confirm if its FIM. I guess the reviewer here didnt think to do it

Is the first video I’ve seen of yours ;man what a great video
Hi from the UK. As it's one of my favourite movies, I guess I will double dip and get the Arrow Video version.
@@spfilmviewers5629 it’s such a solid release.
This isn't true 4K. It's 2K upscaled to 4K.
Most 4Ks are. Even some of the most well regarded.

I will pass. Again 4K movies are not all
They are cracked up to be on movies. Some are spectacular others are equal to their blu-ray counterparts
25 minutes of nothing. What a pointless “review”.
