A very lovely and atmospheric image. For information for those not familar with the role of contrast filters in B&W photography, a filter ( terrestrial photography filters are classed as wideband filters as against those used in astronomy and astrophotography which are classed as narrowband and ultra narrow band filters) would allow the light corrsponding to its colour to pass and all others are blocked. A wideband red filter 23A for example, will therefore pass red, orange, some yellow but will block blue, green and violet light. A no 15 yellow filter, aka Minus Blue, will block most of the blue light but will pass yellow, orange, red and green. Shadows are illuminated by blue portion of the light spectrum, that is why the use of a strong yellow or red filter will darken the shadows to near black and ' enhances ' the contrast, so use filters with caution if you don't want garish or cliche results . In digital photography, software usually mimics a film photography filter by reducing the pixel values corresponding to that filter and its strength and ' width ' can usually be manipulated. You must also understand that we can not see a large portion of the light emitted by foliage and funa. That is why quite often the use of a contrast filter can give unexpected results, or even no result. Hope this helps.
Great video, and a big hello from Brazil .
I love B&W and really enjoy shooting with my m4/3 cameras and find it far easier to work with than film. These images are an inspiration. Favourite is the white shot of the highland lake.
thank you - so kind of you to say 😊
I do enjoy shooting with a view to use the image as a black and white. You probably know I’m a big fan of moody skies and there’s something about black and white images that work. It conveys emotion more for me. My Ricoh GRIII produces some stunning bnw JPEGs. Great video Chris, so inspiring 👏👏
thanks John - moody skies are far more interesting to me than a great sunset. totally agree 👍
Basically it boils down to contrast and scene quality, without those two you just end up with an average picture.
Hi Chris can you please do a video on infrared photography on an non converted Fuji camera thanks for your help, I love watching your videos.
thanks - I think Thomas Heaton did one of those videos recently, you should check that out on his channel. I haven't watched it yet, but saw the thumbnail was along those lines. Cheers!
Hi Chris, lovely images mate. If you don't know the youtube channel 'AOWS' you must check out his work.
Thanks! Yeah, I've seen a few of his videos - When I bought my Bronica film camera I searched TH-cam to see if anyone else had one and his channel came up. He's a great photographer!
I prefer to use a blue filter for black and white images
I always use black filter for B&W photography.
Nice shots and tips. Do you have any advice for turning a photography hobby into a viable business? Even if it's part time along an existing job? if that's the sort of thing you discuss on patron I'd be interested in joining and asking there.
get your facts right before your "tutorial" Orange.
