I think a major difference in what makes American Dad so good and Family Guy so bad are the background characters. With Family guy you can tell who is a generic stand in and who is meant to be an episode specific character. With American dad, especsially in the later seasons, all background characters are designed to seem like they can pop out and enter a story at any moment. And they actually reuse characters for backgrounds, if you look hard enough you can actually find Jenny herself in some shots. That sort of love just can't be found in the Family Man

Then theres that guy sitting on the car and asks him "Then what are you gonna do?" But Stan doesnt hear him because, you know, the earphones. So the guy just looks all sad. I know you know what I'm talking about. Its my favorite moment in the entire show and I cant explain why.
