The competition really seemed to have lost some flair and energy after the 80's. Even the narrator is boring.

It lost it's bouncieness and had far more acro, flexibility and break dancing.

Not to mention that you'd think if they were hiring a foreign narrator, they'd teach him the state abbreviations, because he kept saying that the contestants from Louisiana were local contestants from Los Angeles

In the Women's Individual Final, the defending champion Tobey Gifford did a good job despite her age (36 yo, with 2 kids), incorporating difficult and very exhaustive moves in repetition. New champion Teri Levins (29) had more appealing moves, which earned higher Technical/Artistic points... But overall, I feel Tobey's 1998 performance (at the beginning) was the BEST.

The show completely misses the energy, charisma and production of the mid 80s early 90s editions. Even candidates are way under the 1988/1990 events, which were the momentum of the show

I was confused why he did that, but I just figured it out. Louisiana's abbreviation is LA, so I'm guessing he either didn't realize that LA meant Louisiana or he didn't do enough preparation and sort of glossed over it.
