I found a 67 Hagstrom F-12S....How does a vintage, Swedish guitar sound?

My only disagreement is that Hagstroms were on a par with Teiscos and the like. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Jimi Hendrix and Noel Redding both played 8-string Hags. The Smothers Brothers had custom models that they used on their TV series. Randy Meisner played several HBIIs with the Eagles for years. Elvis played a Hag on his comeback TV special in 1968.
The Hagstrom-player list continues with Kurt Cobain, Joe Walsh, David Bowie and Frank Zappa (an F12 12-string just like the one seen here!)
And if you are ever so fortunate to play a $30,000 Alembic, remember that Owsley Stanley got his inspiration to build those incredible pickups when he started taking apart the Guild Starfires that were played by Phil Lesh (Grateful Dead) and Jack Casady (Jefferson Airplane.) Those instruments were factory-equipped with Hagstrom BiSonic pickups and bridges.
Lakland's webpage touting their Chi-Sonic bass pickups makes the statement, "...reminiscent of the long discontinued Hagstrom BiSonic pickups from Sweden." BiSonics are still being third-party manufactured by several makers, including Guild, faithful to the original Hagstrom design. These new items sell for $100 - $400. If you have an original Swedish Hagstrom BiSonic, you've got a chunk of pure gold.
My current bass-of-choice is a 1969 Hagstrom F400, and it's preferred over my 1966 Fender Precision, 1964 Epiphone Newport and 1986 Fender Custom Shop Jazz. These basses are all great, but the Hag has 'em beat.
From 1958 until 1983, Hagstroms were made in Sweden and the engineering for their "Kings Neck" came straight from Saab. The patented result was a neck that just wouldn't bend. I've played hundreds of them over the past 60 years and found only one, highly-abused example of a warped neck. No guitar ever had a thinner neck than a Hag, and the company took great pride in advertising that fact.

I've played one of those several times. Cool sounding, but I wouldn't give it to a beginner unless you want that beginner to quit. Fix up the 12, buy her a Squier Strat or Tele to learn on, and if she sticks with the guitar, she might dig playing the Hagstrom later.

The "neck heavy" comment is absolutely true. I got a hold of one of these years ago and noticed that immediately. I ended up using that quirk as an effect: swaying the guitar as I played gave it a super slow vibrato effect, almost like a record with the hole drilled off center. That "wobble" can be an amazing tool when used properly. For what these sell for I'm insanely jealous of anyone who just has one fall into their posession. Well done!

I re-aquired my dad's old 1976/77 Hagstrom Jimmy Oval archtop that he sold when he passed away 18 years ago. It might just be the 60s ones, but the quality is waaaaay better than Teiscos. It's a really solid archtop. A bit over built, but still rad all the way.

what you should do is string it like a 6 string like Stu Mackenzie and then show her the 12 string side of it once she learns guitar pretty well and has some others if thats a possibility (which I have a feeling is).

I'm the owner of one very similar, body paint color and headstock color being the only percievable differences. It was my father's, he had purchased it in I believe Germany when he was stationed there back in the mid 60's while in the air force. It's been through a tougher existence than that one, for sure, but it's still functional. One of these days I'll restore it.

I loved this video Jeremy! Great work as always. That's a really cool guitar and a perfect 12 string electric to keep around. It may not be a perfect guitar for a beginner but if it makes her want to play guitar then I think it is PERFECT! You totally nailed it. It's a very cool and inspiring guitar. Thanks for sharing!

I had one of these as a teenager. I had owned an electric Spanish guitar from Sears, or Montgomery Wards, and a flashy Norma guitar which was crap, but this was my 1st "REAL" guitar. I loved the sound, but I wouldn't say I liked the sliding switches. They would either be noisy or go out. I did learn not to try a full-step string bend when a callous was ripped off my finger. LOL. You could get a decent harpsichord sound out of these if you played in the correct style.

Not Teisco equivalents at all. And I love Teiscos. I have several. Hagstroms are Fender quality all day long. They are very quiet and don’t feedback, even when played loud. Pickups are not microphonic. The neck is much easier to work with. The tuners are better. It’s just better in nearly every way than Teisco. They do look a little similar sometimes.

This is a legendary guitar brand, although its kinda silly to introduce someone who really wants to learn playing guitar with this old thing, especially how they never touched a 12 string before.
