I've been waiting for a worthy successor to my pocket 4K, which has been very much sufficient with the metabones speed booster 0.64 XL. This might be my first upgrade since then! 🙌🏾 Great video! Very informative.
@CVPTV Yes! The video was helpful. I just wanted to confirm because I have heard from other sources that the CF Express type B module will limit video recording to 60 frames per second.
The 1700$ 8TB media module gives you a lot more storage per dollar than buying CFexpress cards, at least 50% cheaper and 8TB is more than I will ever need for any single project, but needing a 2000$ media dock for offloading is a dealbreaker.
In my experience with the types of projects that I do (mostly commercials) shooting whole day on a single media unit is problematic since you're not backing up throughout the day and are putting all your proverbial eggs into the same basket. In this regard, more manageable chunks of 1-2TB (depending on the data rates of course) are more preferrable as you or your DIT can verify that the footage is okay and back it up throughout the day and in case of an issue - hopefully be able to reshoot the problematic shots.
Blackmagic, if you’re listening… put this sensor in a Pyxis Pro for $4K, with V-Mount/Gold Mound battery options and Neutral Density. It’s fine if it’s limited in resolution and framerate.
You better hope your DP or whoever rented the camera also rented the card reader & multiple drives. Big storage is cool, but often on professional shoots, the DIT is transferring files the entire shoot day, not just at the end. Even with a modern thunderbolt workflow, it's just a ton of data. I have a hard time seeing how massive, internal drives like this make sense on commercial and narrative film sets. However, maybe for doc work where you don't have an AC or DIT, this could be awesome because it's one less thing to worry about while shooting run and gun. Still, I worry about putting so much of my very important footage onto a single drive that could fail, rather than spreading it out among several cards
@ I have! You guys are brilliant. I meant more real world shooting from filmmakers who have purchased or rented the camera. With other systems, we usually see brands giving away a few cameras to filmmakers who will shoot docs or spec ads to showcase how the camera reacts in a real world scenario. We haven't seen much of this from any BM launch, but it would have been particularly nice to see with this one. As it's their "best" camera yet.
Super interested in this. My two holdbacks: 1. The green skintones that seems to show up and all the videos I have seen (seems to be difficult to control/correct). 2. Body durability, looks to scratch easily? Very interested in your comments or corrections on these concerns. Thank you for the amazing content!
I wonder how the Mini Pro 12K OLPF will change in price after this camera starts shipping. I cant imagine they can still sell it for nearly the same price.
Funny that they even give you the option to continue shooting video that’s dropping frames. That feature should absolutely be on by default. I sold my BM cameras and got the Ronin 4D8k. It’s absolutely amazing besides a few livable quirks. After fiddling with cameras that don’t have mechanical stabilization I quickly realized that when shooting low frame rates like 24fps, having built-in machanical stabilization made my footage look significantly sharper then even more expensive cameras when doing moving shots. Stabilizing blurred footage in post is not a good workflow. I’m sure this camera is incredible if you’re always on a tripod. Maybe some day I’ll be able to afford two cinema cameras (one for movement shots and one for high dynamic range Tripod shots) but for now super happy with the 4D.
@@geoffreybassett6741That’s low key crazy. Having built in ND is a godsend if you wanna keep your build small. Granted the camera itself isn’t very small so I can see the argument for just doing it through a mattebox nd filter kit but tbh I would much rather lose the mattebox while keeping high quality PL glass with pretty flares (ie cooke panchro classics).
I’m not sure about M, but I’m pretty sure BMD said that the L-Mount physically wouldn’t fit with the mechanics of their interchangeable system, and they were forced to make the call between user-interchangeable, and separate bodies for each mount with more mount options. I think this was talked about during either an NAB 2024 or CineGear LA 2024 interview.
@@geoffreybassett6741 They would have to make something along the lines of a Pyxis variant of this for L mount to come, because the ND of the Ursa Cine are part of the camera and not the mount, and thus the flange distance on this camera is too large for any of the mirrorless mounts
Would it be possible for you to also mention the prices in € and $ in your future videos for your European and American viewers? Great content as always though! I want this camera so badly, and we are actually in the market for a new A-cam right now. We would be able to afford it, but as you mentioned, the required workflow is just so different. And it really is, as you put it, a power-hungry lump of a camera. But we are so invested in Sony glass (although we recently picked up some Ares primes in PL) that I guess we will just wait for the FX9 or FX6 successor-hopefully arriving with the global shutter sensor from the A9 III, Sony’s new AI autofocus, internal 6k raw like the C80, open gate for vertical video and the variable ND (but without the IR pollution from the Burano :D). That said, the specs on the Ursa are just so damn perfect that I find myself constantly arguing with myself about whether we’d be able to make it work for our small two people production company after all. Open Gate, BRAW, those frame rates, the fact that you can use the whole sensor without line skipping, the dynamic range of course and so on. I doubt that anything from Sony will come close to what Blackmagic did here-especially with that €25,000 Burano out there, which would instantly get cannibalized by the hypothetical FX9 camera with Open Gate I just described. But who knows. And I doubt they will put X-OCN in that camera because of the Burano, but maybe they will allow external BRAW recording right off the bat. Ok, rant over. Thanks, CVP!
