Dortmund had a title choke very similar to Newcastle's against Bayern in 2019. They were going almost unbeaten in the first half of the season, losing only one match and drawing one match while winning the other 15 of the 17 matches. I think they were c. 10 points ahead of Bayern. Shortly after the start of the second season half they were suddenly losing and drawing against several mediocre teams, of course like always lost in Munich (they had won the first match in Dortmund), were soon taken over by Bayern (who won every match except two in the second half of the season), seemingly lost their last chance for the title by losing against terribly bad archrivals Schalke. On the match before the last one, Bayern did not decide the title with a 0-0 against Leipzig (a goal of them being declared extremely slim offside), Dortmund reduced the distance from 4 to 2 points, but then Bayern easily decided the title on the last matchday by trashing Frankfurt. They finished 78 points, Dortmund 76 points. Dortmund and especially very quiet Lucien Favre were critisised for missing mentality, and emotion and never having showed the real effort to win the title (as it never was their season aim). Dortmund's choke this year was remarkable as a team leading before the last match and then playing at home had never before lost the title in front of its home fans. Also remarkable was that Sebastien Haller missed an early penalty to turn around Dortmund's match. In 2000 Bayer Leverkusen choked leading before the last match. They lost against a relegated team, with Michael Ballack scoring an own goal. In 2009, I think, Schalke choked by losing against their archrivals Dortmund (similar to Dortmund losing the title against Schalke in 2019). In the 1980s Werder Bremen had two terribly tragic chokes against Bayern. There was one season where Bremen had led the table between the 1st and the 33rd match, they lost the title to Bayern on the last match. In another season Werder only needed to win against Bayern in the 32nd match to clear the title. Bremen's penalty taker who had never missed a penalty throughout his whole career (and would never miss another penalty) shot the penalty against the post, the match stayed 0-0, I think. Bayern won the title as Bremen did not win the following two matches.
Yeah, sadly German football history is full of seasons where several different teams have choked to the better of Bayern who still were mostly on top in the end even in bad seasons. Every time a team really battled it out to success against Bayern is like a treasure or gift from heaven, and you only can believe it as soon as it really happened, never before. I could name a hand ful of different teams that experienced their own choking history against Bayern. German football just has never produced a stable number 2 or rival for Bayern. The fact that of Bayern's over 20 national cup finals they only lost four (1985 vs Bayer Uerdingen, 1999 vs Werder Bremen, 2012 vs Dortmund and 2018 vs Frankfurt) shows it all. German football history is like: in the 70s Bayern vs Gladbach, in the 80s Bayern vs Hamburg, in the late 80s and early 90s Bayern vs Werder Bremen, in the late 90s and early 2000s Bayern vs Dortmund and Bayern vs Leverkusen, in the 2000s Bayern vs Werder Bremen and Bayern vs Schalke, in the 2010w Bayern vs Dortmund. And most of them have been choking, with the occasional title in between. The saddest part of Leverkusen's and Schalke's chokes is that Schalke won the last of their 7 championships in the 50# and Leverkusen has never won a championship until today.
Btw, the most emotional and by far saddest season final in Bundesliga history (regarded as that by pretty much anyone) is Schalke losing the Championship to Bayern in 2001 during the last Seconds because Bayern equalises their match through an indirect freekick. While Schalke players and all fans had erronously already started to celebrate the title for a few minutes. They celebrated until they watched Bayern equalising on a huge screen that had turned to Bayern's match. However, it might be difficult to call it a choke as they had been going into the final match on 2nd place. Bayern would have been the (rare) choker if they lost the title because of playing 0-1 in the last match against a terrible Team. They had no clue, pretty much no existing chance on goal throughout the match, but in the end they got gifted a free kick by the opponent's goal - who absurdely had been a Schalke legend playing on loan for Hamburg. A Schalke legend destroying Schalke's title chance as a gift for clueless Bayern, that's like the essence of German football history competitions....

Gerrard is easily one of the best midfielders of all time who gets way to much hate bc he didn’t win a Prem but everyone ignores the horrible ownership that nearly bankrupt LFC and the horrible teams he was part of. If Gerrard left LfC for Chelsea or another club he would have easily been regarded as the best English midfielder of all time. Even Zidane himself called Gerrard the best player on the planet back in 2009.
thank you. It's silly how such a career can be distilled into one incident. Calling him a choke after over a decade of being the KEY factor to pulling victory out of defeat again and again and again is simply ignorance
Reminds me of Michael Ballack, who despite his huge relevance as Germany's biggest Star in the 2002s and only hope for the national team ist usually rememberrd as a loser who brought the "losing gene" to German Football because he never won an international tiltle, almost only was successfull with Bayern (where "anybody" can win), and because of his infamous own goal in Leverkusen's losing championship final in 2000. So stupid to remember the biggest German player of the decade for being a loser....
I dont agree the Liverpool season was a choke, your definition stated being favorites is part of it. Liverpool was in great form but at the start of the season was expected to challange for top 4 at most. It was a team full of average players, especially in defence, and some world class players. Competing against oil clubs with squads way more packed out.
Its definitely a choke. At the point it happened, they were the favorites. A league season is way different from a singular match, and Liverpool is a big club.
The Liverpool part is incorrect, they needed to beat Palace about 8-0 to win the league because City had 2 home games against average teams with nothing to play for. That's why they were bombing forward at 3-0.
Leverkusen in 2001-02, on course for a historic trebel & managed to lose everything in May, special mention to Ballack who went on to lose the World cup final
It's silly how Gerrard's career can be distilled into one incident. Calling him a choke after over a decade of being the KEY factor to pulling victory out of defeat again and again and again is simply ignorance
I'm already calling this before watching the video: Rensenbrink in the 1978 WC final. Not scoring, but shooting at the inner side of the post. In the Netherlands we even named that type of miss a "Rensenbrink". But you might miss out on Robben vs Casillas' toe.
Forget about Robben vs Casillas. There's even similarities when it comes to player wanting to score a crucial goal in the form of Randal Kolo Muani vs Emi Martinez.
I'm pretty sure it's not just the Premier league though is it it's just most of us here watch Premier league Football so we're more aware of these choking moments in history. I mean Barcelona themselves choked a 3-0 lead to Liverpool in the CL and Bayern lost 2 last minute goals Man Utd in the CL final in 99 to lose 2-1 also Juventus in the semis that year were 2-0 up against Man Utd and lost 3-2. That's just off the top of my head
As a liverpool fan, it still hurts man. Even though I must admit, if the team had won, Rodgers would probably never leave so soon in the next season, as he would be immortalized by the fanbase as the first Premier League winning manager in history. Which means that Klopp might never have come. And all those years later, having Klopp as the manager of Liverpool is something which only made me love the team more, as a person who lives abroad but still watches every match.

There was similar story for Benfica exactly 10 years later. They lost to Porto on penultimate league fixtures, lost to Chelsea on Europa League Final after Branislav Ivanovic scored last minute goal, and more shockingly, lost to Vitoria Guimaraes on Portugal Cup Final.
How about the Liga MX 2013 final, America vs. Cruz Azul? Cruz Azul were up by 2 on global, up by one man, 3 minutes left, and America forced penalties, then won! Also, Cruz Azul in general chokes so much that they have the word Cruz-Azuleada used in place of choke

In the 2009 Brazilian League, Palmeiras were 5 points ahead with 10 matches to go, a difference that had never been overcome at that point, but they had a terrible sequence and ended up not only losing the title to Flamengo, who was 5th with 10 matches to go and 9 points behind, but they couldn't even get a spot for the Copa Libertadores, finishing 5th on the league. Then in 2020, first São Paulo had a 7 points lead with 11 matches to go, but the team melt down and with fights in the dressing room, they lost the lead to Internacional in the 31th round, after a 5x1 loss at home, but on the 35th match Inter lost 2x1 to Sport, who was fighting against relegation, and then on the 37h round, they played away against Flamengo, with a 1 point advantage and the chance to win the league, but they lost 2x1 and FLamengo took the leadership before the fnal match. But then, when it was looking like Flamengo was also going to choke, with a 2x1 loss away aginst São Paulo, Inter had a draw at Home against Corinthians in a dramatic game, with lots of missed chances, a controversial handball that the ref didn't gave a penalty, and a offside goal on the injury time of the 2nd half, after Flamengo's match, which became a meme here in Brazil.
if the gerrard slip counts as a choke, then surely asamoah gyan's penalty miss also counts in the 2014 World Cup. It would have seen an African country get tot the semifinal of a World Cup for the first time (good thing Morocco 2022 happened) Asamoah was one of the best players in the continent and in the world but that pen miss is his defining moment.
Southgate really ruined this plan. Played too defensive and wasted Luke Shaw's goal, he somehow summons Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, both of which missed their spot kicks.

You used clips of it in the video: Chelsea vs Bayern in the Allianz Arena. Everything was made for this game to be Bayerns Champions League win, after failing against the italian treble team of inter. But fucking Drogba pulls that club out of the deep hell and almost every Bayern player fails the penalty shootout, except Neuer. This match is so deeply ingrained into my dads head, that he still hates Chelsea more than any other club in the world. More than Leipzig, more than Dortmund, more than anything. I watched it with him, I saw the euphoria, the happiness and then the absolute despair in his face. The only reason it hurts less is because of the treble the year afterwards, it was as if all the pain had gone away in an instant (and probably because it was against Dortmund lol).

The Gerrard slip is the most over used idiotic talking point out there. They lost the game 2-0. The slip didn’t cost them the game. It didn’t cost them the league title either.
Ye it wasn't Gerrard fault at all that brain dead goalkeeper is what cost them the League
*biggest star in the 2000s - dear autocorrect...
Gerrard is not a choker… not at all.
By the way… crystanbul wouldn’t change anything, Liverpool was depending on city’s results after Chelsea.
He’s a slip-er, that’s for sure 😂😅😂😅
Bro ur videos r super nice. U always have a different way to look at something and convey the gravity of that peeiod in time 🔥
Thank you man
My first season watching football was 95/96. My introduction to football was watching my local team bottle the league. Explains a lot.
That gerrard slip is the best thing that happened to english football
Niran is Gonna love this!
Leverkusen in 2001-02, on course for a historic trebel & managed to lose everything in May, special mention to Ballack who went on to lose the World cup final
5 German players were from Leverkusen during that World Cup Final loss.
Not a season choke but PSG absolutely melting in La Remontada losing 6-1 after winning the first leg 4-0
Idk whats worst. Gerard slipping, or Demba Ba actually scoring.
I love what you do man and you are one of my favorite TH-cam channels I just want to say love what you are doing and keep doing it❤
banger of a vid thus far here Viz!
It's silly how Gerrard's career can be distilled into one incident. Calling him a choke after over a decade of being the KEY factor to pulling victory out of defeat again and again and again is simply ignorance
Sporting 2004-2005 (league and uefa cup final at home) and 2015-2016 (league with Bryan Ruiz missing a sitter against benfica)
I'm already calling this before watching the video:
Rensenbrink in the 1978 WC final.
I'm not sure why, but the Premier League will always have a culture of choking & nobody is immune to it
Man City haven’t choked
@@txlmunot in the prem but in the champions league I mean ..
@@FlaqkoGTA most years…
Other than Man City
I'm pretty sure it's not just the Premier league though is it it's just most of us here watch Premier league Football so we're more aware of these choking moments in history. I mean Barcelona themselves choked a 3-0 lead to Liverpool in the CL and Bayern lost 2 last minute goals Man Utd in the CL final in 99 to lose 2-1 also Juventus in the semis that year were 2-0 up against Man Utd and lost 3-2. That's just off the top of my head
14:59 Newcastle 4 points behind Newcastle😂😂 that slipped past the edit
Hi Vizeh! Great video! My question why did you put Odegaard on the thumbnail of this video? Did had a big choke moment?
Please do another Choke Vid! I’d love to learn more about the history of Arsenal and Spurs 🤣
That title with the thumbnail is wild, welcomed but still wild.
Stevie G. 😍😍😍😍
Biggest chokes in spfl Celtic 2003 lost the Europa league final to Porto 3-2 lost the Scottish league cup final to rangers 2-1 and lost the league on the final day of the season on goal difference by 1 goal to rangers
Brilliant video liam would love u to do a part 2
Arsenal and Liverpool in 07
Liverpool '09. When they thought they would win the league with that dossena goal
I think you skipped over the part that barbosa didn’t just burn the goal post he invited all his friends over grilled it without them knowing and then served it to them to eat it 😂
In the 2009 Brazilian League, Palmeiras were 5 points ahead with 10 matches to go, a difference that had never been overcome at that point, but they had a terrible sequence and ended up not only losing the title to Flamengo, who was 5th with 10 matches to go and 9 points behind, but they couldn't even get a spot for the Copa Libertadores, finishing 5th on the league.
You mean the 2010 World Cup, don’t you?
As far as I remember, Ghana were pretty good in Brazil, but had zero chance of progressing in a group with Germany, the USA and Portugal.
Oh right, 2010. When they got kicked out in the quarter final by Uruguay. My bad
Ajax vs spurs 2019, Bayern x man united 1999… those were major choke jobs.
Dortmund last season completely bottling the league on the final day against a mid table team, With Bellingham getting injured and unable to help
Unbelievable that you didn't include Leverkusen
8:41 How much do you want to jinx it?
All of Brazil: Yes.
Add England vs Italy, imo England should have beaten them and won the Euros.
Southgate really ruined this plan. Played too defensive and wasted Luke Shaw's goal, he somehow summons Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, both of which missed their spot kicks.
Leave my man Odegaard alone with that thumbnail 😭
We need the collab with Maqwell
100%
Morocco vs Tunisia in the final of the AFcon 2004
14:99 with Newcastle only been 4 points behind Newcastle 🤣🤣
Solid vid, well done. More like this will definitely be appreciated
Part2 pls vizeh
Usually love your stuff but Stevie G was the definition of clutch his entire career. Dont be ignorant and jump on the "slippy G" bandwagon, he;s a bonafide legend and one of the greatest midfielders ever to play the game....and FAR from a choke artist.
I didn’t call him a Choke Artist, it’s just a title and thumbnail cause I didn’t know how else to call it
The title makes it seem like hes a choke artist and to have him as your thumbnail drives that nail into the coffin. Hes one of the best footballers of all time, SOOO many other "choke" artists out there who have won nothing, he damn near won everything with Liverpool!! I get what you did there though.
Liverpool won a Covid PL with no fans to celebrate lmao gotta feel bad for them.
Hungarian golden generation losing their first game in the last 60, but it happened to be the world cup final
need a peterborough choke in the playoffs last season
4:19 it was since 1990 not 92 that Liverpool won 🤔
Every penalty shootout for England..ever. Chokefest!
IT WASNT THE GERRARD SLIP!
It’s the Kolo Touré failed backpass to Peter Odemwingie against West Brom that made Liverpool lose that 13/14 title.
th-cam.com/video/G1_a44KZSf0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=QxJnLZXwJ7x5EYr1
If it weren’t for that mistake they wouldn’t have wasted points against West Brom and inevitably won the league
Borussia Dortmund chocking at the very last match against 1.FSV Mainz last season.
Love it keep it up.
Thank you!
I think you should do a second video on Andrés Escobar, as that could have been the worst skip up in football history
I wonder if you will comment on the new Dude Perfect ownership at Burnley.
Helicopter Sunday deserves to be here, the Scottish league came to the last few minutes, Rangers had beat Hibs at eater road with Celtic having to beat Motherwell away to win the league, celtic were 1-0 up for 80 minutes before a Scott McDonald double for Motherwell sent the helicopter carrying the trophy the other way to Easter Road.
When I think choke in footy, I automatically think of that Roberto Baggio penalty 😳
Nah… even if he scored Brazil still had a penalty to close the deal. Unfair to call it a choke although Italy made a mistake to put him and baresi to take the pen, they were exhausted after 120 minutes.
It was West Ham who City played in the last game of the season in 13/14
We need a part two to be even longer
Vizeh is definitely starting to really love these Lemmino bgm 💀
How is Liverpool over Milan not on here??
JT slip, Gerrard slip, spurs bottling prem, bayern not killing the game with that penalty. We're so weird
Part 2 Please
Liverpool covered up Arsenal choke in the same season. City choke against Chelsea team with no strikers and ok forwards, plus Chelsea having a wishi washy season (In the cl final). Leicester city choke in the championship playoffs after missing a penalty. Giving us one if the best commentary moments ever.
Here’s Hogg…. DEENEYY!!!!
was waiting for that dortmund shambles last season
attendance in 1950 was actually estimated to be around 200 thousand, not 173.
WE DON"T LET THIS SLIP
Rotherham vs burnley at turf 2-1 Rotherham at 90 mins 3-2 Burnley at 100 mins biggest choke for rotherham
My man shamelessly using Lemmino music 😮
How about the England national team? Always seems to be a favourite in major tournaments but always fail to deliver the prize 😅
WOULD LUV PT 2 PLS
when was this recorded this season just started😊
What's the song in the intro?
Please a part 2!!!!!
Any iceberg vids soon ?
Harry Kane choking we will be there
why the hell is arsenal in the thumbnail when the video has nothing to do with arsenal🤦🏾♂️
Choke also known as Spurs.
BORUSSIA DORTMUND THIS YEAR
Burnley choke vs qpr to lose against them at turf and not undefeatable at turf for a full season
When Rangers went unbeaten all season in Celtics ten in a row season will never be topped 🤣🇬🇧
