The airbase crew received transmission after transmission of the flight going down. Then silence. No confirmation of Yuris status, and no way to reach his damaged aircraft. He had gone silent after reporting that he was damaged, and his intent to RTB. Finally, after 10 agonizing minutes of speculation, a heavily damaged LaGG limped into the view of our AA gunners, and shot a red flare to indicate he was in distress and his radio was nonfunctional. It was Yuri. He made one of the ugliest landings I've ever seen, bad even by Yuri's own, highly questionable standards. His aircraft was immediately taken in for repair, and I set about checking his weapons. The fighting must be as brutal in the skies as it is in the city. I'm just glad I'm out here fixing and arming aircraft, and glad the top Soviet ace is back in one piece, even though the same cannot be said for his aircraft.

"Once again Yuri came back home with a Damaged Plane, and i was angry, we as Mechanics dont get any sleep or rest at all under those Conditions! And at the top, were should we get so many Parts? Those are not growing on Trees around here, and the Factory barely Produces any individual Parts since it moved across the Urals..Well those were my taughts as Yuri landed with his Damaged Plane, later i chewed those words in my mind over and over and over...because no one else came back from the mission, no one, it is a disaster. Above that, i went to Yuri plane, it was a miracle that the Wing did not break, it was truly handing on a few Metal bend Straps, and i observed this, because when our Mechanics went to push the plane to the Repair Spot, and while pushing on the Wing, the damaged wing just broke off and fell to the ground like it was handing by a feather. It is truly a miracle that Yuri came back on this coffin. They say, this is the biggest concentration of weapons, troops and Tanks the entire world has ever seen so far, and we are in the middle of this meat grinder, there is no tomorrow, no today, no dreaming of the end of the War, we live minute by minute, knowing that we are in Hell and we will not escape it. I look at the Convoys of Wounded and Dead crossing the Volga under the cover of night and crossing our Roads, thousands after thousands are dead and Wounded. God, if i ever knew or imagined hell, that vision of it, was much more better that what we live Today. As for Yuri, he is sad, wounded and barely walking, we are truly seeing the end of the end, some Colleagues Mechanics stated. Maybe we would be the next to be send off to the Front if there is no one left to fight .."

Yuri is the highest scoring fighter pilot in the VVS. Therefore he gets top priority for replacement parts. Even if it means cannibalising a rookie pilot’s plane to get them - or in the worst case, giving Yuri the rookie’s entire plane and giving the rookie Yuri’s shot-up ‘hangar queen’. The squadron can do without a rookie in the air, it can’t do without Yuri.

    A letter to Yuri Antonv
Greetings comrade! I am happy to hear that you that you are back fighting to defend the great city of Stalingrad after your vacation away from the front lines. What does not please me are the great loses we have and continue to take defending this great city on the river. You and the men you fight with are the best the USSR has to offer. Under direct order from the Chief Marshal of Aviation, I have expedited the delivery of new La-5 Fighters. In testing these have proven very capable and a great upgrade over what you are flying now. I can not give you a definite arrival date, they are coming. Please continue to hold the line, and we will hold your back.

The battle of Stalingrad rages on. Having increased my tally to three kills, I was living life to the fullest. The Russians were scrambling to put anyone they could find in an aircraft. With little training and any actual combat time their pilots were dropping like flys under the guns of our mighty fatherland. Two of the enemy were killed but a few days ago. One was unlucky enough to bail out over our lines. Yet the Red Devil has escaped death once again. Reports from a nearby unit say his aircraft was seen flying over the waters of the Volga looking like a piece of Swiss cheese. It is clear to see when a man has religion on his side. It seems as though he is immune to death. I hope this war ends soon enough for me to avoid his gunsight.

*There appears to be some messy writing in Cyrillic made in Greece pencil on a dirty leaf of paper
The flight was attacked today. It seems like the invaders seem to get better and better everyday. I saw Yuri pull off when approaching the target, looked like he had some damage, god I hope he is okay. I haven't seen any of the other boys. I watched Egor crash into the ground. What a terrible way to go, spending your last seconds in a coffin spinning out of control. I watched Valeriy get hit, I don't know whether he lived or not. Bogdan is also unknown, I went down before him. I was perusing a 109 when I was hit, he hit me hard with what felt like his 20mm. I spiraled out of control and barely got my canopy opened to hop out. Luckily my landing spot was in a bog. I evaded capture for a day before I was caught by a German patrol looking for our downed flight. They took me to a camp on the outskirts of the city, well, I suppose if you count a barbed wire fence surrounding you as a camp. They pack us in like sardines. From what I hear there are about a hundred of us in a cage the size of a house. I can hear the bombs and artillery fall sometimes, from what I hear our boys wont budge from that damned city, giving those dogs a run for their money I hope. I'm planning a breakout later tonight with a few Armenians I met, the Germans don't have searchlights so sneaking in the darkness should be easy. Hopefully we can seek refuge with some comrades in the city.

As a form of protest, comrade Solbatov made us all design a better plane, for our great airforce, and make a paper model of our design after. I made mine specifically, to survive comrade Antonov's unique style of "landing". ofcourse, it's equipped with big fuel tanks, and even bigger guns. It even has a coffee maker. To end on a bright note, comrade Antonov finally has a use, for the cane i made him.

From what I've read, the most likely cause of a fighter exploding under fire like that was a hit to the oxygen tank - it was considered one of the better ways to go, because it was pretty much guaranteed to kill you instantly. I wonder if Il-2 has the oxygen tanks modelled?

That was some gnarly wing damage. I doubt it would have made a difference if the wing had actually been made of aluminum instead of plywood.

One thing that irked me is Yuri calling his plane a "varnished coffin". Historians say that this nickname was given to LaGG-3 in a post-war book. And while it's possible that the nickname itself came about earlier, i doubt Yuri would use it, since he started from I-16 and was very successful with LaGG.
Nothing major, i just hope you won't use it too much.

I don’t know why I though that line was so funny, but it was 😂

Trofim Isaev might as well have ridden his LaGG all the way down considering what the Nazis did to Soviet prisoners. It would be quicker that way...

Well, he can always wait for the German soldiers to get close to him and then open up on them with his pistol… might take one of them with him.

September 9, 1942, an hour after the analysis of the morning task. Office of the Commander of the 9th GIAP.
" ...and think about this, Commander: he didn't use a single bullet! For the entire flight! He did not even try to shoot back while his comrades - your subordinates - were dying! He just ran away from the battlefield! I know you pray to him for all his "glitters" from the Battle of Moscow, but see with your own eyes: he brings down task after task-"
"Comrade Osobist, everyone has flaws and-"
"Remember that "miraculous escape" from behind the enemy line? Are you sure that this is the same Yuri Antonov who was transferred from near Moscow? Yes, anyone could rob a dead pilot, put on his uniform, and infiltrate us! Who dares not trust "Twice Hero"!"
"I understand that this is your job, but such fantasies-"
"You know that Abwehr can do that kind of stuff. I would tell you a couple of stories... but I won't. But even more... what if he was an intiltrator from the very first days of the war?"
"Comrade Osobist, his papers are in perfect order. Orders, medals - everything is real. I personally - PERSONALLY! - made a request to the Award Committee"
"Fine. Okay. You are in charge here. For now."
    "What"?
"Yes, for now. You can play with him, wipe his snot... But know this: if your pocket "hero" throws some other trick, you will end up in my office with him. Have a great day."
With these words, the military counterintelligence officer of the 9th GIAP left the office, slamming the door in farewell.
