4:07 : "We won't be able to bail out on this side of Volga though for too much longer" With defeatist talk like that you beter get Red Orchestra penal batalion campaign ready
From the diary of Sergeant Isay Isaakovich Kirilenko Entry #6 Everyone could hear the explosion from miles away. Even I was distracted from cleaning my PPSh-41 when I heard it, and when I came out of my quarters to investigate, my men were already ready with a report for me. The fighter escort for the Sturmoviks looking to attack artillery positions deep behind enemy lines had been intercepted by German fighters on our side of the Volga, and one of the planes in this dogfight, what the pilots call a "furball," simply exploded. Both our fighters and the Sturmoviks had to return to their respective bases once the German swarm had become too thick for them to fight through. And everyone's hearts sank when the LaGG-3 with the howling wolf and the 54 kill marks wasn't among those who landed back in our airfield. Surely this time, this was it. Yuri Antonov had finally been brought down by the Fascist invaders after what must have been hundreds of attempts on their part. Once again, the mood throughout the airfield had turned sour once word had spread that Comrade Antonov's plane had not returned. The invincible Red Arrow of Moscow was not so invincible after all, it seemed. He had already cheated death once before, but surely not this time. His plane exploded! If the Germans really wanted to make sure that he was dead then this was the way to do it. My men and I had the task of finding the wreckage of his plane to confirm his downing, so to speak, and recover his body if possible. However, when we got to the place where some of our troops reported seeing a plane going down, all the debris that we could find had German markings. There was no sign at all of any Soviet aircraft in the area, intact or otherwise. If this wasn't where Comrade Antonov had crashed then where did he go down? Did he actually go down? He must have, otherwise he would have returned with the rest of the escort flight. But no matter how hard my men and I scoured that forest, we just couldn't find any trace of that missing LaGG. It wasn't until later that evening that the mystery of Comrade Antonov's missing plane was finally solved. The comrade captain himself arrived back at the base in the back of an American-made jeep, and boy did he have a story to tell to the lads! Apparently, the explosion that we had heard was actually a Fascist machine that Comrade Antonov was attacking. The damn thing had actually exploded right in the Comrade Captain's face and caused his engine to stop working. The captain couldn't get his engine to start again so he had to find a place in which to ditch, and he eventually found what appeared to be an abandoned airfield to the northeast of Stalingrad. Because his engine was inoperative, Comrade Antonov could only hope that the airfield was in friendly territory since he only had one shot at landing his LaGG. Luckily for him, the airfield he landed in was still in Soviet hands even if it wasn't being used by any air force squadron at the moment. We eventually determined that the airfield Comrade Antonov had seen was the one near the village of Verkh. Akhtuba, and soon my men and I were on the move again. This time we had the mechanics with us, with the plan being to fix the plane in Verkh. Akhtuba and then flying it back to our current airbase. It's going to be a long night for Raptowsyak and his boys, I feel. ~ Entry dated 5 September 1942 Entry #7 Trofim Makarovich Isaev. Valeriy Grigoriyevich Kotov. Egor Egorovich Naumov. Bogdan Miroslavovich Biryukov. Four more names to add to the growing list of casualties that had been claimed by this bloody war. Four more men who would never be going back to their homes, and in the case of Major Kotov and Captain Biryukov, two more fathers who wouldn't be coming back to their families. The government would say that they all bravely gave their lives for the safety of the Motherland, but I doubt if their mothers would truly be able to accept that. I don't think I've accepted losing them all as well too, even though I've long accepted the fact that there is a big possibility that not all of us are going to make it out of Stalingrad alive. Me and my men have a slightly better chance than the pilots of surviving this battle, but I know that that doesn't mean we'll all survive. I don't know how those pilots are even able to get into the very things that they call "metal coffins" and fly back up into the air to face the Fascist threat. I'm perfectly fine dodging those Fascist bullets right here on solid ground, thank you very much. Speaking of pilots, the 9th GIAP is running low on them after today's debacle. Major Kostin had to escort a flight of Sturmoviks all by himself because of the losses we've sustained. Our other remaining pilot, Captain Antonov, is having his plane repaired as I write this. Luck has once again decided to smile upon this man as he was the first one to be hit by a German anti-aircraft cannon, and his decision to turn back to base after getting hit would turn out to be very fortuitous indeed. And speaking of fortune, Major Isaev was said to have bailed out of his plane after getting injured by more flak, but even if he survived bailing out, he would have landed behind the Germans' lines. I hold little if any hope of ever seeing him again. Some lad named Osipov just arrived here from Moscow, flying in on a LaGG. I heard rumors of a possibility of a new Lavochkin aircraft to be sent down here to Stalingrad, but if the replacements are still using LaGGs to get here then those rumors probably aren't true. As for Osipov, I give him three days until he bites the dust. A week at most, unless he turns out to have the same luck as Comrade Antonov. I would advise the lads not to get too close to the new guy just yet. It would probably make the loss a bit easier for them to handle, hopefully. ~ Entry dated 9 September 1942
Today we wore a black ribbon on our school uniform, in solidarity to Gregor. Captain Biryukov was his father, we honored him like a true hero deserves, we all knew him atleast a little, and he will be sorely missed. All of them will. Glad to see the return of a soviet campaign! Be nice to see the old Whiskey class again
It will come back once the NATO campaign wraps up. Which should be soon.
Can't wait! Enjoying the Narwhal too as well, definitely a whole different class of machine compared to that poor whiskey :)
Blue paint is fine, fascists will now fear blue baron, давай!
Wow what a furball
Happy to see more of Yuri's war of attrition.
