As a former cosmetology instructor the one thing I always stressed with my students is this. Your client MUST be able to go home, bathe and shampoo and be able to RECREATE THE LOOK you gave her when she was in your chair. If she can't, did you really give her a good haircut FOR HER ? Good for you doesn't matter.

Since 2020 I have been unable to get a cut that fits my description, my face or my requests to the three stylists at three different chain salons in So California.
Stylists do what they want; not what I request. I'm not shy or uninformed at my age about what I want or need. But I am reluctant to be too forceful with someone who has a pair of sharp scissors near my face!
It has gotten so bad here in Long Beach, CA that the last stylist actually went off on a rant toward the stylist I had B4 the pandemic who could cut the heck out of my wash-and-wear, half curly -- half-straight aging and a little gray around the face and neck short, thick hair. Go figure!
I'm at my wits end because short of being a bully in response to their refusal to follow customer's requests, I'm at a loss as to what to do to solve this problem.
Oh, BTW -- I even traveled quite a ways to a beauty school, but the student couldn't follow the owner/teacher's instructions.
Your thoughts and suggestions would be highly appreciated to help me get my Halle Berry type cut -- my style signature cut. I don't do trends as an artist. That's not me so I deeply resent having women impose theirs on me or their disrespect, too. Help! Thx.

I just saw this video on youtube. I caught my attention because yesterday I just colored and cut my hair like this. I’ve learned over the years how to do this type of hair cute and I have to say he is a very patient and good teacher. Her cut came out beautiful. Of course for me the hardest part is my back but I set up mirrors and it makes it quite easy and my husband shaves the baby hairs on my neck. I also cut friends and family hair and while I never went to school that was something I never got to do in my life. Now I am too sick and too old. 62 living on Long Island in N.Y.

Wish I could find a stylist somewhere within 50 miles of me that cuts the way this gentleman does. Mine was a design director from Vidal Sassoon that did my hair since the mid eighties. Knew how to design long, medium and short cuts for the individual. Used the scissors. I hate razors on my fine hair. He retired a few years ago...and short of spending a fortune driving to Tyson's Corner in Virginia to Sassoon from Winston-Salem, NC, I am still looking...

That's because a lot of people think they can do a 6 week course and call themselves a hairdresser!! Sadly they do get jobs! I told my juniors it can take 12 years of experience before you can be confidant of pleasing everyone who comes through your salon door. Good trainers like this are the best people to help you get there. There is NO shortcut to experience. Too many people thinking they can do everyone else's job these days.

When COVID hit so did my journey of gradually learning how to cut and color my own hair at home and I never did go back. If that wasn’t alarming enough on it’s own I also decided to be a brave little toaster and chop off all of my long platinum blond and and hot tool fried locks super short. This was done in hopes of starting fresh and with a lot of effort hopefully eventually coaxing back into existence my formally natural curl pattern. I’ve been seriously missing it. Audrey Tattoo’s curly pixie cut but red was in my hair goals. I have zero hair education so this video was tremendously helpful in figuring out direction and angle and lift before taking the insane chance of cutting my own hair so I thankfully didn’t totally mess it up! I've worn my hair every which way, from Princess Diana's 'do in the mid-1980s to short hair, to the big hair look in the late 1980s to the bob and back to short hair. I'm wearing it short again because it accentuates my face shape and shows off my hair. 😊💇

Anyone who wants to know. When I cut and shape around the ears. I literally hold the comb on top of the ear and let it pull the strands of hair down for me to go in with my scissors and cut my shape as close to the ear as I can. It Took me ages to learn this trick and now I no longer struggle or hesitate when it comes to the sides.
