Aquila Red Series Ukulele Strings - Demo

  • Demonstration and discussion of Aquila's Red Series ukulele strings. Played on a Kamaka concert and Kamaka tenor, you should be able to hear the difference the Red strings make. The audio quality may make it hard to hear though, especially during the solo with the black strings - I was using the wrong mike and it clipped. (The better mike used for the Red solo sounds a bit weak on the high end to me.)
Bottom line: I love the Red strings. They're louder and brighter. I had no trouble with breakage.

Someone gifted me an outdoor uke with the reds on it. I LOVE them. I had never bought any due to my friends having breakage issues. My A string did pop one summer day and I replaced it with a nylon which only made the rest of the reds sound brighter. This has a red low G and I am quite happy with the tone of the whole set on the poly uke.

Some people complain that the Aquila Red strings break too easily. Here's what one seller of them says: IMPORTANT:
To avoid potential problems, please make sure the string slot in the nut is wide enough. This is easily determined by putting the string in the slot and visually checking the fitment before installing the string. A radiused lower edge at the fingerboard side is also very important. Some ukes have a sharp lower edge. These strings are very reliable under correct conditions.
So, be sure to round-over the sharp bottom edge of the string slot in the nut. A luthier could make this adjustment with a slot file.

Great tips. I just installed a new set of Aquila Reds on my tenor Kamaka with no problem. I do take a bit of extra care stringing them, but again, I have never had one break prematurely. I was replacing a nice set of D'Addario carbon's, which I think is their brightest string. They were excellent, but starting to sound dull after more than a year of use. The Reds woke my uke.

You can also apply graphite (with a pencil tip) to the slots to minimize the friction of the string in the slot.

I did have my A string break, finally, after about 9 months of use. That's not bad in my book. The strings still sounded great - not worn out. It broke right at the nut, a singular point of friction. As a new experiment, I strung my tenor with D'Addario Titanium strings - similar sound to the Red, though perhaps not quite as bright or evenly volumed.

I have the RED gCEA on one tenor. they absolutely sing.. no breakage. I also have another that I have the super nylgut and a red wound low G stolen from the pack I intend on using with the composite low G later... I've broken both the low G wound and the A string super Nylgut because I was playing too hard. I then broke the RED A string the next day. I'm still a fan and intend on using these for the life of the Ukulele I have. I'm actually only watching reviews because I am interested in the 8 string double 4 course "gizmo mod" and obviously need to find suitable strings.

I have read many reviews that say these strings break too easily.

See my comment downthread. I had one break eventually. I have not had one break prematurely. It is important to follow the instructions when stringing them. My current set on my concert has been there the better part of a year. Your mileage may vary.

Update: I bought a set and installed them, and wow! I am sold... they sound phenomenal, best sounding things I have put on my ukulele so far!

I have gone through a couple sets of these on my tenor since this video. The current set still sounds good after over a year. Because they start so bright, having them dull a little over time doesn't hurt the sound much, when comparing to other strings. Even my concert, which is way overdue for new strings, sounds brighter with old reds than if I had used other decent strings.

Sorry but for a comparison you are talking to much. It's pretty hard to compare the sound when you have 5 minutes of talking in between :-(
